In most cases, I'd say it's just ridiculous to cast blame on Alex for every death that happened to occur to his clients and his family's circle. Hakeem's family had already seen signs of neglect at the nursing home (urine soaked bed, the whistle Hakeem used to signal distress to the workers was missing and was found behind his bed). But at this point, with what we know, it sure doesn't seem far fetched to wonder if Alex had something to do with this. Especially since his settlement was reached just a few days before he died. And we know Alex was already doing and continued to do dirty tricks regarding Hakeem and his family's case (filing saying that Hakeem was a resident of Hampton County, when he wasn't, etc).

Having any kind of association with the Murdaugh family seems to be more deadly than cigarettes.
Makes one want to strap on bullet proof vest if you planned to go over for a visit then take note of all possible exits once there.

Regarding motive, I have been thinking about AM’s comment to the detective in that video….that he and MM never argued except about spending time with her family. Compared to MM’s sister’s lifestyle, AM and MM were the poor relations. Being a big fish in little ole Hampton is nothing like being real society in Charleston.

But up until the day of the murders, with the confrontation at the law office, AM had his reputation, legal and otherwise,in tact. He had a ‘family name’ that conveyed certain status and legal power.

Till that day, he also seemingly found ways, criminal and otherwise, to keep MM thinking they had more disposable income than they actually did. He would know, full well, if status items like Gucci shoes were important for her to keep up ‘appearances’ being so close to a lifestyle and social prominence beyond the ”good ole boys” Murdaugh power.

But on this day, his world is collapsing. His son is about to go to trial and may well go to prison…his young life potentially destroyed. And in AM’s mind, with his finances, law license, social status, etc. in jeopardy, he might feel that MM would be totally destroyed as well…humiliated in front of family and friends, by the confluence of his financial and reputational ruin.

So I wonder…Did he justify these murders to himself in part as “mercy killings?” Certainly they would give him possible creative opportunities to save himself, but maybe this defense tactic of his great “love for his family” might just backfire if jurors consider that he might have thought he was saving both PM and MM from a ‘fate worse than death.’

@stmarysmead

I thought of Pauls love of Moselle, hunting, fishing, being outdoors. And then MM’s love of Edisto, which if true he wanted to sell.

With the Beach lawsuit about to expose all his wrong doings.

I saw early on that MM’s family are in a good place in life and wondered if AM was the type to try to keep up with the Joneses.

I think Alec was used to *being* the Joneses. At any cost. JMO.

How's this? To frame Alex, they had to be on the property. This goes to motive. They want to watch Alex suffer through all this. They had opportunity, dark, rainy night, open gate, plenty of pines to hide behind. Means? That's trickier. They had to count on Paul setting his gun down at some point. It is possible the other gun they knew was in the white pickup. This could explain how the truck got off the property--they could have stolen it and abandoned it to get themselves farther away from the crime scene quickly. I know that's a stretch. They had plenty of time to get rid of the guns, whereas Alex did not have much time at all because he had to establish his alibi at his mom's house and keep making calls to his wife, change clothes, wash himself, etc.
Where they live in the middle of all that pine growth without any big city lights around, pitch dark outside means just that. I truly believe if AM felt that his family had been killed by anyone that posed a threat to himself much less his family or friends he would have been completely terrified and there is no way on God's green earth he would have hurried to call them home around him. IMO he knew that misloaded gun was all he was gonna need for protection.

The state will continue to call witnesses this week, financial and otherwise. Expect to hear from Murdaugh's older brother, Randy Murdaugh, as well as Curtis "Cousin Eddie" Smith, the Walterboro trucker charged with acting as Murdaugh's accomplice on a host of money/drug crimes.

I got to the courthouse about an hour before it is set to open. There was a line waiting to get in even then. Expecting a packed courtroom today
