Really wish there was some kind of digital re-enactment of how this all went down.

Now to phone interview of #AlexMurdaugh on 9/13/2021. AM was in Atlanta.

Dick Harpootlian says they have to be out of the room in 30 to 40 minutes. Kelly said they prefer not to do telephone interviews. But this is what they requested so they don't have a choice.

"Richard Alexander Murdaugh" AM says as he identifies himself for the recording.
Kelly: are you in sound body and sound mind?
AM: Yes sir.
Kelly: Are you talking to us willingly?
AM: Yes sir.

AM said he met with Jim Griffin and then Chris Wilson at his mom's house. AM and Chris Wilson were talking about everything he had done with pills, money and lying

AM says the best he can remember, his Oxycontin addiction had begun 18 to 20 years ago. "I had taken some at 4 a.m. so I was having some withdrawals." The next day, news of his embezzlement came out

AM said he felt it would be easier for his family if he was dead. "I had a fair amount of life insurance.. $10M or $12M." AM said he called Curtis Eddie Smith. Had bought them from him for years

AM said he'd been giving Eddie Smith $50K-$60K each week for pills. Asked Eddie to meet him "not too far out from my mom's house."

Eddie followed him into town by the Sunoco gas station. "I don't think we got out of our cars." AM in Mercedes. Eddie in the grey pickup truck. He said he asked Eddie to shoot him. He seemed surprised but then said "Ok."

Eddie was going to follow him out. AM said he gave Eddie the gun. Not much discussion. Eddie followed him out to Salkehatchie Rd. AM said he made his tire flat. Back driver's side.

AM drove out. Eddie shot him but missed. Hit him in the back of the head. Lost vision for a little bit. Disoriented. Took a minute for vision to come back. Remembers there were two cars. One stopped and tried to help him

Alex said his intent was to be killed so Buster could get life insurance because he was about to lose everything. AM said he first asked Eddie to shoot him at the Sunoco and then it happened however long it took to get back to the scene

AM apologizes to Kelly and said when he saw him in the hospital he was in a "very bad place." Kelly: How long have you known Curtis? AM: I've known him for years. I represented him. He knew my dad from playing softball

AM said he talked to Eddie on teh phone frequenty about getting pills. He said he paid him frequently. It varied. Paid mostly in checks. Most came from Bank of America and Palmetto State Bank accounts

AM says he paid Eddie Smith from the DBA Forge account. AM says he was told Eddie got the drugs from a black guy in Walterboro and some connection in Beaufort. Never saw those guys. Don't know

AM said he gave Kenny Hughes money for drugs, too. Who's Kenny Hughes? He's a guy I called up and asked for drugs. Paid him in checks and cash. "In the past, I have paid other people."

AM said he had paid Barbara Mixon on very few occasions for drugs. Mixon worked for his mom, Miss Libby

.38 revolver had been at Miss Libby's house. He said he gave it to Eddie Smith but doesn't know what he did with it. AM said he doesn't know if Eddie has talked to any of his family members. AM doesn't know. Kelly says Eddie said he needed to talk to his attorney, who was Am

Kelly said Eddie then said Randy Murdaugh was his lawyer. AM said Randy's not going to rep him."

AM denies calling Eddie Smith from the hospital but then said Randy said he called him. "When you're going through withdrawals, you'll do anything to make it stop. That's probably what that was about"

#AlexMurdaugh says majority of the money he paid to Eddie Smith was ill-gotten. Might have been some of his money. Dick says AM is no longer independently wealthy

AM says he didn't pay Eddie to shoot him, when asked. He just asked him and he said he'd do it

AM said it would have been several days before the shooting, last time he paid Eddie Smith with a check. Kelly asks if he owes other dealers money. AM: No sir. Kelly asks b/c he wants to know if there's a threat to Buster

Griffin then says something about "that assumes he passed all the money along." Referencing Alex not owing any dealers money. (There's been mention of the Cowboys gang)

Kelly said it doesn't make any sense to him about not paying Eddie Smith to shoot him. Kelly asks again "you did not pay any money to Eddie to shoot you?" AM: No, I did not

AM is asked about the insurance policy. He says he doesn't know where it is.

Kelly: Did anyone know about this plan besides you and Curtis? AM: "No.... I sincerely apologize for lying to y'all.

Kelly now going through the details of the shooting. AM says he thinks he got the knife from Eddie after he gave him the gun. Kelly: Why weren't you truthful with us about this when it happened? AM: I don't know other than I was in a bad place
This is Alec's version of course, but if it were true, why did Cuz'n E leave before he actually killed Alec? If the first shot didn't work, why wouldn't he shoot again -- E promised to kill him according to Alec.

There are a number of problems with Alec's story but this is the main one! If Eddie agreed to kill Alec, he didn't. He's a country boy and I'm certain he knew it was a superficial grazing. MOO. MOO.

(The story we heard later from Cuz'n E about wrestling with Alec when the gun goes off makes more sense to me -- Alec was going to try to set E up. OMO.)

IMO AM’s story of getting Eddie to kill him was preposterous. He admitted he didn’t pay Eddie to do it. That fact blew the whole story up. Why would Eddie agree to kill him if he wasn’t paid? I don't think investigators bought it. JMO.

Makes you wonder how bad the real story is, concerning how much he admitted to. No way what he's saying is all true.

When being asked what time he went to the office the morning of June 7, I recall AM saying something to the effect of ...." not really early as I was recovering from the weekend, you know?". When asked what he did on the weekend he said they went to a ballgame. That's all he could come up with (or was willing to come up with). What did he do all weekend? Did he socialize with other people? Or did he just always go in late (as his assistant said) and he didn't want to admit it?

Why (or how) did he forget he just went to visit his parents Sun. evening and brought his Dad Krispy Kremes? In all the times he mentioned the weekend he never once mentioned it that I heard.

Also, when he talks about what happened that day (that he can recall) he never mentions he learned his Dad was terminal, he talks about motions for the boat case, doing this or that at home before going to the office (of which he really can't recall), but learning your Dad was terminal seems like it would stand out a bit and be memorable.

You just can’t make this all up! Wow AM is quite a character! Lies, deceit, scams, distractions, rocking, head bobbing, sucking on lifesavers……..never saw such a trial!

That's really dumb. Not you, of course. I mean Alex.

To use a guy like to hide the money trail is just not going to fool anyone.
Lousy lawyer Moo

On the question of why he was stealing all that money when he probably didn't need it, maybe it's a like a Better Call Saul situation, where he's just addicted to the grift because he likes it.

3 were there, 2 dead 1 lives!
Heard it in court tv
Says it all MOO

MM is overkill like hate MOO
How AM says ‘it’s a chicken’ to her was condescending tone to me.

The way he threw the knife across the road was pretty much the same as the way he threw the phone across the road.
Well he HAD been a baseball coach, ya know. ;)

I just spent some time trying to find any mention or photos of Alex himself being a good hunter. I found one photo of him in hunting gear but no dead prey, but found plenty of photos of Paul displaying the results of his hunts (and other Murdaugh men as well). So, people might just be assuming that because he owns gun and a hunting "lodge" and comes from a family of hunters, that he's any good at it. He might suck royally but still enjoy it, and it seems like in that family it was pretty much a requirement, skilled or not.
No one wants to hunt with a shooter that injures twice before a kill shot.

AM is really bad at the “I don’t recall” game.

I think AM is trying to muddy up the names of people who have substantial dirt on him in the interview with DH/police. That way he can do damage to their credibility in advance. One of them is on the list of witnesses for the murder trial, and I think she knows something important. It is total speculation on my part. Maybe the "He is up to something" quote.

I have been struggling to find the right metaphor for how AM conducts his close relationships with family, friends, co-workers, CES. I feel like every relationship in his life has an expiration date. He is able to lavish these people with his attention and superficial charm, knowing that it won't last forever.

On the expiration date, he extracts maximum usage out of the person and then discards them. People who still trust AM just have not reached their expiration date, yet, and for some reason, they are not seeing the pile of wreckage of AM's other victims. They are still in his bubble.

He is also able to hush up any public talk about his crimes through power, intimidation, manipulation, and the art of BS.

He'll bring you close so he can repurpose you and mine you for his needs, and then he'll leave you like a pile of useless rubble. What bewilders me is how his intimate circle does not see the pattern until it is too late. It is like they don't see the weird extractor claws pop out until it is their time.

He should be on the cover of psychopath magazine.
Not a metaphor, but his relationships seem transactional. People went to him for legal assistance and, from the moment they met, Alex was sizing them up for what he can take from them. In 2011, when Paul was 10 years old, Alex sized up his law firm partners and figured out how to steal from them. They never noticed.

As long as his family made his life better, he kept them. When Paul and Maggie caused problems, he eliminated them. Buster feels like the privileged favourite child; his father loves him so much that he tried to kill himself so Buster could have $10 million.

Alex arranged the fake shooting because he wanted people to think that his entire family was being targeted by someone related to the boat accident. The money for Buster story is manipulation, to get him onside during the trial.

My hubby with plenty of criminal trial work in his past says that Harpootlian brought that up to show comradery with the witness -- "they are old friends." Hubby listened to much of cross on KK and sized it up as showing the jury they could trust Harpootlian -- he and KK were just two guys collaborating, trying to get at the truth with all the angles and speculation. Only hubby's opinion. I will add I think he also works at confusing the jury (with mirror image). OMO.

Added: Hubby's assessment is that Harpootlian knows exactly what he is doing. He may appear to be a doddering but he is totally calculating every word and gesture.
I agree with your hubby … DH is no fool and he knows exactly what he is doing (he’s been doing it a long time, lots of practice!) I hate how he plays the Buddy Buddy Nice Guy, I personally see right through his act and I’m hoping the jury does too - in my opinion he is not a good actor!

If the man wanted to commit suicide, he could have taken a hand full of oxycodone.

IMO, AM only wants other people dead so he can live peacefully with all the money from other people he has stolen over the years.

JMO. moo

Not if he was habituated to opiates, IMO.

The whole thing is so fraught with holes and puzzlements. If he was habituated to 70 or pills a day (of oxycodone) he would have needed way more. Or to wait to die from the usual reasons of drugs.

IMO.

The whole thing makes no sense. But yeah, opiate addicts (IMO) are people who "seek peace." For themselves.

I found it interesting that Alex even brought up Sunday. In the interviews they ask him about Monday morning, not the weekend. My impression is that Alex did not want to talk about anything that happened on Monday and he kept throwing in the ballgame on Sunday as filler to avoid talking about the day of the murders. Also, he may not have wanted to get into anything about his father because that gets close to the issue of him having called Maggie and asking her to come to Moselle because of his father's condition. Speculation/JMO.

I wish we had a way to highlight (even more) really outstanding posts.

And I wish we could pin your post - it sums up so much.
