Please attribute the following statement to attorneys Justin Bamberg and Will Lewis regarding plagiarism allegations against their client, Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill:

"Becky Hill is deeply remorseful regarding an allegation of plagiarism that has recently surfaced from her new book, Behind the Doors of Justice: The Murdaugh Murders. The pressures of developing additional content under tight time deadlines resulted in Ms. Hill taking material written by BBC reporter Holly Honderich and submitting it to her co-author Neil Gordon as if it were her own words. Ms. Hill accepts full responsibility for this unfortunate lapse in judgment and has personally reached out to Ms. Honderich to express her sincere apologies. The self-published book is only available online through Amazon and Audible and the decision has been made to unpublish the book for the foreseeable future until next steps for the book have been identified. Ms. Hill has great respect for the tireless work journalists do every day and sincerely regrets using Ms. Honderich's words as her own."

The mess that this has become is a great reminder that we should all take accusations of power inequity, graft and stilted courts as potential truths that should be investigated. Are there people in jail in this area who might have been framed or unfairly prosecuted? It seems like we have lots of people willing to game the system from this murderer to connected lawyer to connected court workers. It is not joke to realize that there may have been crimes never solved or crimes that famed non-guilty parties. It makes me sick to my stomach.

Ha! Lapse in judgment.

Didn't that woman who wrote a book about Chris Watts plagiarize too?

I think it is pretty safe to say that Ms. Hill is/was massively overinvested in this trial. Elected officials shouldn't put off the appearance of impropriety. Ms. Hill is way beyond that IMO. Money and fame corrupt completely, indeed.

ETA: Laughing at the "tight timelines." Becky had to strike when the iron was hot, apparently!

I am so disappointed in BH's actions. I agree she might have been a little overwhelmed by the media attention and notoriety, but come on, use your good old fashioned common sense. She's been doing that job a long time and should have known better.

BH has potentially jeopardized this verdict (I personally don't think it will be enough to cause a retrial) and I cannot imagine how blindsided Judge Newman is feeling after having put so much faith and trust in her.

Her son was no better in his abuse of power as alleged. Just no people....NO.

BH got starstruck I think. She got to hobnob with the rich and famous and she liked it. They praised her for her work and she liked that too. She wanted that to continue and she jumped in way over her head with only child-sized swimmies on. She had no idea what she was doing.
Yet as she swam around with stars in her eyes, Colleton County life continued, including a creepy son, and other small town drama.
She should have just gone back to being a very competent clerk of court. A difficult job that she did well. She wanted more. But if you’re going to start playing a new game you better read all the rules first and understand them all. Her plagiarism error was something she should have learned in the 5th grade.
I’m certainly not defending her on these things. Her flight into la la land has unnecessarily muddled this case.
The plagiarism and her son’s alleged crime and all connected with it, however, have nothing to do with jury tampering and in my opinion there should be no new trial for AM.
The new judge, Jean Toal, causes me great concern. She is tough no doubt, but she is also buddy-buddy with Harpootlian and has been for a long time. She is too political and the two of them tow the same party line. I was shocked she was chosen as AM’s special judge with that kind of connection.
Is her appointment just the same old same old SC justice system trying to reassert its power? We’ll find out going forward, and we’ll find out what Judge Toal’s legacy will be….respected jurist or good old boy hack.

Attention...small town girl makes good!!. Not to disbarage small town America in any way but living in a small town as we do now, it did not take us long to figure out that there were certain family names, here for generations, that carried weight. As each generation grew up and married others like themselves and if they did not move away, certain people with certain names and the ancestry that they carried, appeared in every walk of life, big land owners, councils, commissions, business owners, banks, legal, etc. It is a way of life to interpret and assume, because "it's always been done that way" and nepotism is alive and well! I just saw this case on 48 Hours --Twice convicted OB-GYN received new trial for juror misconduct and as expected -- convicted a second time.

I think jurors/people will see both the forest and trees here so the AM team won’t be able to muddy it up to his benefit. His lies and technology will bite him again.

Agree. In the Neulander case, the trial court denied request defendant should receive a new trial citing the juror alleged of misconduct was undecided during deliberations, and eventually voted guilty -- proving her outside communication did not affect her ability to follow juror instructions to weigh the evidence during deliberations. Neulander received a new trial on appeal.

Alex Murdaugh's pursuit of a new murder trial is set for an evidentiary hearing next month

Murdaugh's lawyers want another trial in the killings of the former lawyer's wife and younger son, citing allegations that the court clerk improperly influenced the jury. The defense will get to put forth evidence at a three-day hearing expected to begin Jan. 29, according to a tentative schedule shared by a media liaison for former South Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal.

Jurors, the clerk and even the trial judge might have to testify under oath.
