SC SC - Stephanie Womacks, 52, Table Rock State Park, 3 Mar 2025

This is the view from the overlook I'm talking about. It's within the park but on the road that is closed on that end. You can see the drop off. I really hope they have searched this area well. I would say a drone would be about the only way to do it. I wonder what color her blanket is? I'm hoping white.

Thanks @BlkMtnGirl. From the looks of this picture I would think a search would be extremely difficult, except maybe with a drone, as you say. Is it likely a woman by herself would try to walk this landscape anytime, especially considering it’ll be dark very soon? How well could you see where you were going? Does look like pretty scenery though.

It’s something I’d do but I also take night hikes by myself sometimes and don’t use a flashlight. You can see a lot in the woods at night when there are no artificial lights around. This overlook is on an actual paved road, so it’s not hard to get to, although I can’t remember how far it is from the campsites.

This is from a local news radio FB site. It gives more info directly from the husband about the trip to get supplies. There are lots of comments about how wonderful and happy the couple are (along with all the people who don't know them and assume he did something to her.) Facebook

If you search for Stephanie Womacks missing on FB, you'll find some other sites posting little tidbits here and there, but I don't think I can link them because they're not news or law enforcement agencies. I believe part of the info is from the Pickens County Sheriff's Department press release, which I couldn't find.

The photo in the news releases was taken near the park entrance. The sign is in front of an incredible view of Table Rock on Highway 11. I assume that is the same sweatshirt Stephanie is presumed to be wearing.

There are two camping areas. Based on one of the above tidbits, they were in the White Oaks campground. This is the map from Table Rock's website.

There are only 25 sites in this campground, and it's not very full during the week in the winter. This is the side we always stay on because it's quiet and secluded. From the campground, the road back up to the main road is fairly steep. Although we're hikers, we always take a car over to Pinnacle Lake because it's quite a ways from the campground.

This park is in the middle of nowhere. There are almost NO nearby places to get supplies. So either her husband went to the camp store (if it's open this time of the year - I couldn't find their hours), or he had to drive quite a ways away to get to any kind of a convenience store. In any case, he would have been gone at the very minimum 30 minutes to much longer, depending upon where he had to go. Sunset is 6:30 right now, and it gets darker quicker in the mountains.

Knowing the campground like I do, I would search the immediate area around the campground itself. I can't remember exactly how it's laid out, but I'm remembering there being some steep dropoffs behind some of the sites. She may have gone into those woods to look for camp wood. I'd also search the Pull Off Table Rock Overlook going toward the East Gate Entrance (which is closed). You can get a great view of the mountain from that overlook. If I remember correctly, there's a steep dropoff around the overlook. The other place I've been tempted to scope out while I'm camping there are the cabins that are near the White Oaks campground. You know, to peek in the windows to see what they look like inside.

I can't envision anyone taking off to go to either of the lakes on foot that close to dark. Of course, they need to search the lakes. We see that all the time :-( But I would really pay closer attention to that overlook because that makes the most sense if she went out for a walk. It would be a nice place to watch the sunset (except it's facing the wrong direction.)

There is practically no cell service anywhere in the park, except maybe at the top of the mountain. By the way, getting to the top of that mountain is rough! It's a 2000 foot ascent. Three hours up and two hours down for someone in good shape. You are asked to register before you hike it at a self kiosk, and you have to be off the trails before sunset.

I sure hope they find her soon. It's not looking good for her to be out there this long without shelter. :-(

If anyone has questions about the park, let me know.

Thank you for this. It’s very helpful.
I’ve been to Table Rock many times but never camped there.
You pointed out a big thing in that if her husband went for supplies he was gone for a good while. Civilization is not that close. She would have had a lot of time to wander off. Getting lost would be easy, but it seems she would still have been close enough for them to find her.
I hope she’s OK.

I wonder what items they have found. Also in the article posted by @MissPie is this -

“Several items” seems strange. It popped into my mind that she may have shed clothing in a “paradoxical undressing” scenario. This is where someone with hypothermia takes off clothing because they feel hot. 😢 This is just all so sad. I can’t believe she would have wandered off enough to get that lost, but that’s what it looks like at this point. I still think she fell off an embankment of some sort.

Initial articles stated her walking stick and blanket were also missing when her husband returned to find her gone. It's possible they found those items, though I would take that as a bad sign she wasn't found with them.
My initial thoughts reading about those items missing was she went for a walk to settle down at a lookout. Very possible fell off somewhere?
But I can also think of other reasons why her blanket and walking stick would be missing a long with her from the campsite. None of them good. I hope they find her soon.

Among the items were cigarette packs, a hat, a blanket and a walking stick. Gibson says his crews have two theories for why she left them. The first is that Womacks was leaving crews a clue after she got lost.

Thanks for this. Also in the article, the items were found a couple of hundred yards away from the campsite in a steep, hard to reach area. The second theory about the items left behind echoes what I was thinking about paradoxical undressing. :-(

Pickens County Emergency Management and the Sheriff’s Office are coordinating to schedule additional search efforts over the coming days to ensure a thorough examination of the area, according to a press release.

Local authorities plan to deploy specialized units, including canine teams and aerial support, to cover challenging terrain and expand the search radius.

Community volunteers are also being organized to assist in areas with dense vegetation and limited visibility.

The disability aspect of it raised some questions. Since she appears to be able to get around in normal camping and light hiking activities, it doesn't appear mobility is a serious issue, though she may have balance issues, hence the walking stick. But I wondered if her 100% disability as a combat vet was due to a TMI, which might affect thinking and behavior. I understand the family wishing to keep her medical situation private, but it it impacts her actions, it might be helpful to know. So glad they are still so actively searching.

There is a forest fire at the top of Table Rock this evening. Here’s an interview with Stephanie’s son. There are a couple of better photos of Stephanie. The family is asking for volunteer searchers tomorrow morning. I really hope the fire doesn’t hinder their efforts. It’s pretty far from the campground, so I think it will be okay, but…
