SC SC - Zelig Williams, 28, needs meds, last seen at his home in Columbia, vehicle found in area of Congaree Natl Park, 3 Oct 2024

“At 10:10, three of his friends received an SOS ping from his cell phone, which is not a lot of time after leaving the house,” Corbett-Jacobs said. Those friends reached out to Williams’ mother to share their concerns.

An iPhone can be programmed to contact emergency services or a list of emergency contacts if an Emergency SOS is triggered. The device can also alert emergency contacts if it detects a hard fall or car crash, according to Apple.

Based on this information about SOS alerts, three possible scenarios come to mind.

1. Someone did something to him to lead him to worry for his safety and he triggered the SOS alert himself.

2. The phone was disposed of, by him or someone else, in a way that damaged it (throwing out the car window?) so that his ultimate destination wouldn’t be tracked. The impact triggered the alert.

3. The phone was on his person and something happened to him, a car crash (in a car other than his, which was found and not crashed), a fall from a height or other impact, or violence that was severe enough for the phone to send an alert.

There was a press conference this morning featuring Selig's mother, who has already lost two kids. Very tough to watch.

“I just want Zelig to come home,” said Kathy Williams, surrounded by family during a press conference organized by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department in South Carolina. Within seconds, she collapsed into the arms of a cousin and was helped off the staging area as she sobbed and repeated, “He’s all I got, he’s all I got, he’s all I got, please bring my baby home.”

The family believes Zelig Williams stopped taking his medication right before he went missing, his cousin said. That would put him in a vulnerable position, and he may appear to be in distress or in a "trance-like state," she said.

"Williams’ vehicle was discovered more than 20 miles away in a Palmetto Trail parking lot near the Congaree National Park.

Williams’ family is trying to remain hopeful as the Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) continues to lead the search. Sheriff Leon Lott has called it a missing person case but added they haven’t ruled out foul play. "

From this article about a candlelight vigil, it sounds like Zelig was very lived in his local community. I hope that the optimism is from some new leads that haven't been publicized.

Zelig's mother, Kathy Williams, was in better spirits at the vigil hours after she was brought to tears during a press conference pleading for Zelig to come home. Wednesday night, she gave the crowd an optimistic message. "My son is coming home, and I'm just joyful. I am so happy for everyone coming out for the lighting of my son, and I'm just so grateful," expressed Kathy.

The talented dancer's case drew many people to his vigil including dancers from Southern Strutt Dance Studio, where he was a beloved member."We all grew up dancing with Zelig at SOUTHERN STRUT dancing studio and he was the biggest inspiration I've ever known," said one of the dancers Allie Elsey. "We are here to support him because we want him back with us and to dance with him again and see and hug him again."

I lived there for many years, and he is indeed beloved and celebrated by a large community in the midlands. (Personal commentary.)

Many Parks Hurricane Helene

Many parks were affected by Hurricane Helene, up and down the Eastern seaboard. The following updates are as of Tuesday, October 1. For the latest update, please see each park's website.

Congaree National Park: The park lost both power and water during the hurricane, and the whole park remains closed until services can be restored.

What medication was he purported to be taking? I cannot think off hand of a medication that if not taken would put someone in a trance-like state. I hope he's brought home alive & well soon!
Williams has openly spoken about a schizophrenia diagnosis so it is likely an antipsychotic or other mental health drug. Some of them can have very bad withdrawals that could account for the trance-like state.

I don't have anything productive to add to this case.
But I am heartbroken for this mother. To lose all three of your children?? Devastating.
I hope Zelig is found safe. Hopefully he ran away somewhere in a paranoia state and will return when that subsides.

Look at his smile! That smile needs to come home.

The performer’s mother, Kathy Williams, and cousin Mieoki Corbett-Jacobs told CNN’s Victor Blackwell on Saturday the search will go beyond the parking lot where the vehicle was found more than 20 miles from Williams’ home.

Searchers will look on both sides of the cross-state Palmetto Trail leading to major roads. “As a family, we’ve been searching. We’ve searched that area ourselves on foot more than once, and now we’re looking to expand our search,” said Corbett-Jacobs.

We Are the Essentials, joins the mission to find him.

The non-profit group, composed of private investigators, former law enforcement officers, and veterans, traveled from Lakeland, Florida, at the request of a family friend. Their arrival has brought additional resources and expertise to the search. "We are typically ground searchers," a spokesperson for We Are the Essentials stated.

"On day one, we covered the trail towards the bridge on foot. On day two, our colleague was on the water, and today we have three to four boats supporting the family’s search efforts."
