Scandal brewing at Oral Roberts University

HMMMM ... OK I am a bit confused..
Being called home was a threat????
Correct me if I am wrong .. but isnt that suppose to be good if your religious?

That was my first thought, too, Amraa. :)

My ex's sister went to school at Oral Roberts for a year. She said it was like being at a religious bootcamp where she was made to feel like a second-class citizen because she's female.

My dad was a preacher, that was what I was taught...Suppose to be a good thing..

I think Tulsans are used to evangelist scandals. Remember that one who had the college in Tulsa and it turned out he was sleeping with female and male students? Can't remember his name. Billy Bob or Billy Joe or something.

And then there was Jimmy Swaggart. I can't remember what he did...but I do remember him saying he SINNED.

The only big-name tv evangelist I know of who has never had any scandal attached to him is Billy Graham.

I think you may be right, CaliKid. I'd like to think at least one of 'em are sincere.

Sorry to disappoint you....

. According to the tapes, Graham cracked anti-Semitic jokes, discussed how the standards of journalism had been lowered in Washington since Jews had entered the trade, and agreed with Nixon that Jews could not be trusted. He later apologized for these statements, but Jerrick and Fox do not mention this occurring, and apparently Jerrick does not view anti-Semitism coming from a religious leader as a "scandal".

These hypocrites tick me off. People rant and rave against poor people getting any help , but these people get all kinds of tax breaks and most all of them live the "high" life just because they are called "religious".

They are no different than the Nigerian scammers or any other thieves who prey on the sick and elderly. They are phoney, baloney and God knows it. And they work real hard to get and keep people in office who will support them.

Come on, montana, you're among friends. Tell us what you REALLY think!

(Not sayin' I disagree, mind you. ;))

It is only a matter of time before the antics of these evangelical scam artists catch up with them. They are greedy power-hungry scammers and will steal the last cents of old ladies to live the high life. That "university" is their empire and they obviously think they can do whatever they want and nobody with rat on them because they surround themselves with devoted followers. It sounds like the wife has a little problem --can't keep her hands off the youthful male lambs. I wonder if hubby is too busy with his own little lambs to notice!
Oh, Cypros, I so agree!!!!! These evangelical TV type preachers are so like you describe. I don't trust one of them. Tammy Faye and Jim Baker, and now Haggard's homosexual scandal. I'm sure God wants them all to have a mansion and multi-Cadillacs or Mercedes. Soon, the one "most favored by God" will be driving a Rolls Royce. Then we'll find out that another one was told by God to have a chauffer drive his Rolls Royce. I just hate it that they can scam these old ladies. These "men of God" should all be in prison. There's no excuse for using their false religions to scam people.

What gets me is Reverand Peter Popoff's miracle spring water, guaranteed to heal your ills and bring you cash money. He puts on a regular dog and pony show.

My mother wrote for the miracle water. It arrived just days after her death from cancer. The small packet of the miracle water was bone dry. Bah....

Sorry to hear about your mom, Countermoon.

Popoff said that wrong. It's guaranteed to bring him cash.

Richard Roberts and his wife were on LKL last night--plus Oral Roberts called in to give his two cents worth on what is going on. I watched a few minutes of the show, but just couldn't take listening to them any longer than that! They were interviewed on the first half of the program.

I never could understand why people take these men seriously???

I am sorry but in the 80's when the Baker's (Jim and Tammy Faye) were all the rage, I could never understand it!!
I mean they looked like caricatures, yet millions sent them money in the name of religion!

I am still scratching my head over the University having to be created or God would bring him home... LOLOL

I am sorry but I cannot fathom why anyone would believe him and send enough money to actually build an entire school!

Okay, now I just have to tell this one.

My Dad and his buddies from the military attended one of these 'healing' events one evening when we lived out near Tulsa. The crazy one of the three--not my Dad--says "quick, grab my arms and take me down there". They didn't know if he was having some sort of religion fit or what. So as they are going down there, he is violently jerking is head to the left while they almost carry/drag him down there. They are looking at each other like "what is he doing". So the guy gets down there and tells Roberts what is wrong with him, uncontrollable muscle spasms. So Roberts does his thing and tells him he is healed. The guy stands up nice and straight and starts rolling his head around and rubbing his neck....full range of motion. As he turned around to leave, he started doing the exaggerate violent head jerking--this time to the right. The audience laughed hysterically.

My Dad worked for IBM years ago and they had some machines go bad at Roberts headquarters and he was terrified that he was going to meet him in the hall and be remembered.

As for this scandal, yikes. No good.

Cal

OMG!! LMAO!!!!!!!!! :p

On a serious note (still giggling in my head), this doesn't surprise me one bit. I'm not a big fan of televangelism or organized religion. Seems to me money always ends up being used in a questionable manner. :twocents: Don't want to rile anyone up.

So true..If I remember, Jesus didn't charge..;)

No He did not charge :blowkiss: it's a free gift. There is a scripture somewhere in the New Testament, maybe in Romans??? not sure, but if I recall correctly, and this isn't word for word, but one of the Apostles was healing or doing something like that, and a woman wanted the same gift and was willing to pay for it, God struck her down because she wanted to BUY His free gift, and I think God did this to show all of us that MONEY doesn't buy His good graces.

I understand that these evangelists need to make a living and get their money from their followers/supporters. I also understand that it takes money to use TV space for their ministry.. It takes money to run a University, rent a building etc... I don't mind ministers asking for money for even the Lord tells us to give 10% of our income (tithes) and when we do that He will bless us.

As far as all the other scandals regarding these evangelists, they are only human BUT I believe if they are going to be involved in "wrong" doing, they should step down from their position. They will be judge the hardest because people look to them. just my :twocents: and another :twocents: for good measure :blushing: :D
