School children taught about gay foreplay

No problem, Gardenlady. I'm as sensitive as anybody and I didn't think you were overly heterocentric.

I may be a prude. (I know it's assumed that gay men are so sexually liberated, but we have hang-ups like everyone else.) But something in me recoils at the thought of a teacher standing in front of a middle-school class, saying, "Now, 12-year-olds, here is how we masturbate..."

But I agree with you that better info on the way both sexes respond sexually would be a good way to start. (Yes, it's a little easier for men because our "plumbing" is external, but you'd be surprised how little most boys know. When I think back to my first fumbling attempts (and the fumbling of my partners)... Oy!)

Maybe specific techniques could be taught a little later? (If I'm being hopelessly Victorian, feel free to say so.)

I'm afraid I'm one of those "dreaded" conservatives. LOL....
But we have our place too.

I don't think self-pleasure is a problem for our society. But learning to put aside self and and self-indulgence is something that needs to be taught. And Servant-Leadership training should be required in every curriculum.

Nah, not 12 year olds, but I do think that if they can ask the question at 12, it should be answered. Because if they're asking, theres a reason - even if only curiosity. And if the instructor can't or won't answer it, the student is going to end up getting bad information from another kid - and we all know how that goes

But I'd say sometime in highschool health class is a good time for in depth exploration (no pun!) of the foreplay/masturbation/ topics. And hell, sex Ed is often SO bad that there are women who dont even know their OWN plumbing well enough - I don't know how many girls I knew (myself included) that thought we had cancer as teens because of normal body "things" (trying to avoid the dreaded "TMI" line lol). Or didn't know certain facts about the menstrual cycle. It's crazy! Is it because everyone was afraid to talk about it? And this was only in '90 or so! How many problems and worries and frustration could be avoided with more information, and a helping kids feel that any question is okay, and will be answered.

We did get the condom on the zucchini demonstration though, so that's something. :D

And Nova, you're not being too Victoria at all, though you are sadly not doing so well at at living up to the sexually-freewheeling gay-male stereotype. :giggle:

(bad joke incoming)

But not master-servant training? :giggle:

What does "Servant-Leadership training" mean? I may be for it, but I have a big problem with the title. I wouldn't call a maid or a nanny a "servant"; they are workers who contribute as all workers do.

So "Servant" training makes me very uncomfortable. Maybe the issue is merely semantics.

I don't think Gardenlady's concern was that kids can't figure how to masturbate. I think her point was that a discussion of masturbation can be a gateway for each sex to learn about the anatomy of the other.

(Shhhhh! You'll get me kicked out of the tribe!)

I know we are both kidding, but the stereotypes tend to explain gays and lesbians as if that is ALL we are. But I'm also a stepfather, grandfather, uncle, etc. My children are in their 40s now, but of course I have concerns about how my grandchildren learn about these issues. (Fortunately, they have such great parents, I don't worry they won't have somebody to ask.)

Servant leader training is really very simple. It's basically the same as being a really good parent. ;)

Okay, I did my research. It's actually called "servant leadership" (as shefner first put it) and is exactly the way I approach management in the workplace: how can I best facilitate the work of those who report to me?

I'm in! Good idea, shefner!
