Hmmmm....not sure I know how I feel about this until I see how much time they give him for the plea agreement. It said up to 25 years. I'm hoping considering that the charges were brought in the first place before being dropped, they can take that into consideration and give him the full 25.

Can those dropped charges even be mentioned? It was 5 years for failing to report her.

Also I'm still perplexed as to what happened concerning the 11 year old boy. He is apparently legally being fully tied to RieLees's death. Where does an 11 year old figure in?

Are these all charges they are bringing on him just for now, or in all?

I'm gonna take a break from homeschooling work checks on my son, classes for my certification and read back through and try to piece together what happened. I love bullet point lists lol.

Thank you so much for the articles and pictures!

The police chief of the town, who was arrested for hiding his girlfriend's meth needles in his locker at the police station, was sentenced to community service. The really interesting part is his girlfriend's last name...COURNOYER. Small world/small town.

WAGNER - The former police chief of Wagner has been sentenced to community service for failing to report his girlfriend's drug paraphernalia.

Chaney was accused of using a storage unit at the Wagner Police Department to store needles his girlfriend, Charline Cournoyer, apparently used to take meth.

Concerning the 11 year old; in South Dakota, because he is a minor, the charges are kept sealed. He will most likely be remanded to a facility, juvenile jail, until he is 18.

Your welcome. I've been really busy but I do get alerts for this case and also hear about it through the 'vine'.

You know, it really angers me that an 11 year old is left to take the rap for this beautiful baby's death. I know that there are some 11 year olds mature enough to watch a toddler (my DD was, for example), but that is under typical situations. The situation in this home seems like it was anything but typical. The adults, for all intents and purposes, were useless because of their drug use. How can an 11 year old in those circumstances be the one held responsible for her death? An 11 year old does not choose to be put in that situation the same way an adult does. Since we don't know the charges against him, I can only speculate, but even IF he did something to deliberately kill RieLee (and IMO, it's probably more likely that at 11, he either lose his temper and hurt her, or it was accidental), it's the adults who were supposed to be watching those children who should bear the brunt of the punishment. This man should be charged with neglect and/or abuse, as the woman is.

How many lives ruined here? Little RieLee is gone, an 11 year old will likely be sent to juv prison where, like regular prison, he will be put in with criminals and learn their ways, lose the remainder of his youth, and probably be sent out at 18 with what? He will be ready to offend in some other way.

And the other children who were around, who have to live with what went on and what they saw... :(

Awful. The children are all paying for the choices of these two adults. :furious:

WTH :banghead: :shakehead:

The former police chief of Wagner has been sentenced to community service for failing to report his girlfriend's drug paraphernalia.

Attorney General Marty Jackley announced today that James A. Chaney, 44, Wagner, was sentenced to serve 180 days in jail and pay a $1,000 fine on one count of misprision of a felony, a misdemeanor. But the sentence is suspended on the condition that Chaney complete 120 hours of community service within the next four months.

What a hot, hot mess. Community service? I'm actually speechless.

I wonder if just a regular, non-former-LE person would have gotten a suspended sentence and community service on this charge?

Oh, silly me, I think we already know this answer! :ohoh:

Wagner man arrested in toddler's death sentenced for drugs

On Thursday, a judge handed down Cournoyer's sentence. He was sentenced 15 years in prison for possession of a controlled substance, with five years suspended. He was also sentenced 10 years for keeping a residence where drugs are located, and seven of those years were suspended.

Cournoyer is eligible for parole after serving 56 ½ months.

sigh

It just doesn't seem long enough. Hopefully he'll violate his parole and spend more time behind bars. Sigh...

I know, he got by with a light sentence. IMHO

Not enough justice for RieLee...RIP sweet baby girl.

Local media report that 29-year-old Laurie Cournoyer was sentenced to 10 years for possession of methamphetamine, five years for keeping a place for meth and 10 years — eight suspended — for having drugs in jail. She was also sentenced to five years for failing to report the death of a child.

Wow. 5 years huh. Smh...IMO, she will be judged by the ultimate power one day. And he will not be so lenient. For he loves the little children, all the little children in the world. I'm sorry RieLee you deserved so much more in life and death.
