Search Under Way As 3 Fall From Mt. Hood

A lab has short hair -- that poor dog is probably freezing to death.

My collie has long hair and a thick coat and likes to lie out in the back yard on top of ice and snow in windy 8-degree weather (his choice), but I don't think I'd take him mountain climbing in this weather.

Mornin', I haven't heard any news yet this morning, but I guess they are still up on the mtn. Oh, FOX has it on now. You can only see 20' ahead of you up there this morning. And it has turned vicious here in Portland today - windy, rainy, spittin' and a sputterin'. On the mtn there are 50mph, 20 degrees, weather to get worse throughout the day. The rescue is now getting more difficult as that snow blows sideways. So the rescuers have to be very careful for their own safety.

I don't think of a Labrador as a cold weather dog, do you? I guess it isn't an uncommon thing, to take a dog climbing.

Ian is on Fox news now. He is on the Cascade Climber site and one of the Portland Rat rescue group. He says they need to get out of the wind, and they can stay warm for awhile. You go Ian! He was very involved when the 3 men were lost in December and the one who wrote all the nitty gritty posts about what was going on at that time.

So we still need to pray these folk will make it down off the mountain.

Oh that does not look good. The guy on the morning show should not have said 'it's not a good idea to take your dog' he should have said, do not take your dog mountain climbing with you, you will be directly responsible for his/her's death if you do. Don't sugar coat it or the idiots won't get it.

This was posted on the CC Climbers board:

Just got back from there ... conditions are horrible. Although not as cold as the January search, the visibility and snow conditions are much worse.
Difficult to pinpoint their exact location. (The MLU's aren't always the answer!!!)
Currently involved in the efforts are PMR, AMR RAT, PJ's (304th), Crag Rats, Mt. Wave, CCSO, and Timberline. On for tomorrow are Eugene and Corvalis MRA teams.

The climbers (two women and one man) spent the night huddled together in sleeping bags, sheltering behind rocks.

I just pray that they're found soon. I care about their safety, but I can't stand the thought of that poor dog w/ him. He can't understand what's happening. I have a Lab myself that is like my kid. I can't even imagine how sad those Lab's eyes must be looking right now as he's shivering and probably freezing to death. You wouldn't take a small child up the mountains and you shouldn't take an animal either. Maybe I'm insensitive, but right now I have more empathy for the Lab.

I agree. I also have a puppy who is part-Lab, part-Border Collie. Well, he just turned one but still acts like a puppy. There is no way I'd ever risk his life in any way. I feel more for the dog right now, too. The climbers took their own risks but the dog had no choice, he was at their mercy.

I feel for the dog too, although Labs are good in cold weather. That's why they are named for a Canadian province. They actually have a double coat that is very waterproof. Their cold tolerance is one of the reasons they are good for duck hunting. Still, it isn't good to be out in that weather.

I feel worst for the families, particularly the families of the rescue crews. Those brave souls put their own lives on the line to save the bacon of numbskulls who should have stayed home in front of the tv.

Oh, lets hope those rescue guys can reach them and bring that poor pup pup home. If I was a relative I would go over find out how they were doing and take the dog. That's right dognap the little guy. If they wanted to go to court for custody let them, but I don't think they would win. I could not leave that dog with them.

Does anyone know if the dog had on any gear? I wonder when climbers take dogs if they have any protective clothing or footwear of if they carry a pack?

I wonder if they had a coat on their dog and mucklucks of some sort. Here in Portland you see dogs wearing clothes a lot. I don't think the bottom of his feet, those gbare pads, would hold up well even walking on snow all the way up the mtn and back down!

I just heard on FOX that the trek back down the mtn is more difficult than going up it. The last link from the Seattle PI was great, and tells that the one woman has short term memory loss. That is not good. So it said they can take these 3 down on litters.

I wish we had a good map where they are - that is often difficult to do. But they fell off a cliff and evidently in wasn'[t into a deep cravass because they were able to walk down the mtn for about 40 min, or 1000' from what they said. There they stopped, and I heard the

SAR group is looking for some evidence of this tarp covering them as they are having trouble pinpointing their location with a pinpoint location.

Looks bleak to me, as conditions are worsening up there as we speak, and a new storm is headed on in. I can see it coming in from the West, off over the Coastal range.

OOps, my backspace bar just stopped working! LOL
Sorry.

They just located the climbers. That is very good news.

The dog is a black lab named Velvet.

If they are cuddling with her to keep warm, then she is also gettin warmth from them, and likely comfort. Plus her instinct would be to protect them rather than herself, if she is a typical lab. She is more concerned about them, most likely, but at least they are all cuddling together in the sleeping bags.

Rescuers have found the climbers. They are in good condition and are headed down. No word on the condition of the dog at this point.

GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. - Three climbers stranded on Mount Hood after a fall were rescued from a snow cave Monday after spending the night amid ferocious winds and blowing snow. "Their condition is very good at this time," Russell Gubele, coordinating communications for the rescue operation, told CNN.

"They were located in the area where their mountain locator units suggested that they were, and we finally got some of our rescuers down there to them. They are fine. They are being warmed up right now and fed by our rescuers."

The three well-equipped climbers, two women and a man, fell off a ledge Sunday.

Gubele said the three were not badly injured and could walk out of the area themselves.

"They're going to walk down," he said, adding that authorities hoped to pick them up with a rescue vehicle.

Please, is there any word on the dog?

The dog is with the rescue team.

From AP news;
He said the three were found huddling with their dog Velvet. They had sleeping bags and mats, he said, and were under some rocks, huddled up trying to keep warm.
