I also found obits for Margaret's brothers John and Stephen, they both died in the late '70s. I am working on posting info on here.

Thanks so much for the info, Grace.

I went to Stephen's obituary that Grace supplied and typed all of the information re surviving siblings at that time (1979). In 1979 he has 5 surviving brothers and two surviving sisters, as follows:

Stephen D. Kukoda, survived by five brothers:

Anthony Jr., Detroit
Anthony KUKODA 18 April 05 31 March 85 Male Detroit, Wayne, Michigan

Paul, Buffalo, NY
Paul Kukoda 11 Mar 1909 Feb 1993 Buffalo, Erie, New York

Joseph, Charlotte, FL.
Joseph Kukoda 15 Mar 1991 Charlotte 79 White 10 May 1911

Frank, Milford, NJ
Frank Kukoda 14 Mar 1914 7 Nov 1988 Milford, Hunterdon, New Jersey

Michael, Calif. (apparently moved to TX)
Michael Kukoda 7 Sep 1915 25 Mar 1995 Harlingen, Cameron, Texas

Two sisters:

Madlyn Chasar, Kintnersville (moved to Hellerton?)
Madlyn ChasarHellertown Pennsylvania 610-838-5349 2001 2002

Anna Briggs, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY
(I didn't find an Anna Briggs that I was sure was our Anna Briggs, but I found an Anna Kukoda which seems to match, as follows):

Anna Kukoda 12 Jun 1911 29 Aug 1993 Bethlehem, Northampton, Pennsylvania

The only sibling still showing alive according to my records (which were only current thru 2002) is Madlyn Chasar. I only did a quick search for Madlyn (but didn't find her under that spelling in any of the early 1900 census) so it's possible someone else can come up with something more recent.

I finally found Madlyn on the 1930 Federal Census. Her name was spelled Madaline at the time of the census. She was 8 years old in 1930, putting her DOB around 1922. That would make her 84 if she's alive today.

I wonder when and where Michael Kukoda lived in Ca. and if there was any contact with Margaret?

He seems to be the only other family member that also moved that far west.

Doogie wrote to quite a few Kukodas, requesting information. Doogie, do any of these names look familiar?

Wow, only 1 surviving sibling. I am still hopeful because if you look at Esther's obit, it stated she had great-grandchildren so Margaret's neices and nephews could remember Brody and there's a good chance they are still alive.

Could someone find a maiden name of Esther and how many siblings she had?

Funny you should ask....There was a Hungarian boxer named Laszlo Orban that was in the 1972 Olympics. He won the silver medal in the lightweight division.

One Polishfamily settled in Posen, Michigan (an essentially Polish community). Its original name Urban was changed to Orban by the oldest son. They are now present in other parts of Michigan. [Incidentally, the same happened to the people who are now the Orbans of Connecticut]. Another family in Michigan is also from Polish origin, but their original name was changed from Urbancewski to Orban by US immigration officials at Ellis Island at the turn of the century. Still another Urban family from Polish origin had its name changed to Urbanes and later Orbanes by US officials.

Some Orbans in the US (San Francisco area, Connecticut) were originally called Orbanowski and simplified their name after immigrating from Germany. The Orbanowski's were originally Polish from Gdansk (Danzig) before emigrating to Germany.

Other Orbans, probably from Polish origin, were living in or near Chicago in the 1890's. They had offspring who live near Los Angeles, all Orbans. For many years, they also lived in Kenosha Wisconsin. Their ancestor's birth name may have been something like Orbanski. A Polish family named Urbanowicz that immigrated to Pennsylvania from Warsaw in Poland in the 1860's had several children. One went by the name Orbanek, others brothers spelled their names as Orbanic or Orbank.

The mother's obit mentions she was a member of the Durham United Church of Christ. The church does not seem to exist any longer.

I had wondered about any church/family records.

I wonder if there is a cemetery there....Perhaps a family plot.

The obit for Stephen states he was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Riegelsville.

Wonder about the same info there.

I notice the obit does not mention any siblings that pre-deceased him.

ETA: The Durham and Riegelsville churches merged in 1970.

Stepehn's obit shows he was married to Mrs. Ophelia F. Wirebach Kukoda....It appears she remarried a man named Bancroft an relocated to Aiken, Ga. and died there in Dec. of 2000.

However, I found something really odd on the same page of this site:

There are a few coincidences....Or perhaps it is just time for me to go to bed.

Since we know this can't be our Margaret, my guess would be either 1) a daughter to one of Margaret's siblings (Margaret may be a family name) or 2) a coincidence

Or, it's the earliest case of identity theft we're run across. Being married for 61 years in 2001 would work well for someone born in 1917.
