Searching for Anna - #1

Glad that things have settled down for you Doogie. My life has been hectic lately too. I've been here but not with the amount of time needed to really get anything done. I'm kind of out of ideas right now with Anna so if you want to throw something my way, I'd be glad to work on it.

I appreciate all of your kind words, but understand that my post is meant as an apology to all of you that have been so great in taking up the search to find Anna. You all have done great things and I just wanted to acknowledge that I recently have not been carrying my fair share of the weight. Well, I am back and am looking forward to making new progress in finding Anna.

I spoke with Annasmom yesterday and we are preliminarily planning to get together in a couple of weeks to print and distribute the before-mentioned flyers to the current residents of Purissima Creek Road to see if anyone who lived there in January 1973 might have any additional information that they never passed along because they assumed that the info was already known. You may not be aware of it, but with all of the communication that Annasmom and I have had during the course of this phase of the search, I have not actually seen her in at least ten years. (She did see me from a distance at a large gathering about five years ago, but I did not realize that she was there.) I am looking forward to our visit and I hope to take some pictures of our reunion that I will share here.

Progress is continuing on the publication of the book and both Annasmom and I are making vows to get it done quickly. An avenue for financing the publication may be opening up soon, so we have run out of excuses and are rededicating ourselves finishing the task.

As always, thanks to each and every one of you for your dedication and contributions of time and talents to the search. Your kindness remains an inspiration.

I could also help out with dealing media or putting together a press kit. Unfortunately, the paper I work for right now is pretty localized so unless there's a Florida tie, I can't help there. But I would totally help in any way I could.

I must be going brain-dead, but until recently, Joe Ford was a resident of the Orlando area (he recently moved out of state). That could have been a "local" angle.

Thanks, GraceBlue. What we were looking for is a "local angle" that would justify reportertype to write an article about Anna. Without the local angle, it would just be a story about a girl who disappeared 33 years ago on the other side of the country (in other words, "not newsworthy"). With a local angle, RT could write about the case and get it past his editor as a local story.

Just a quick update: This weekend, I will be meeting with Annasmom to discuss what steps we need to take next in moving toward the publishing of the The Search for Anna. We will also be completing and distributing a flyer for the residents of Purissima Creek Road to see if any relevant information about the day Anna disappeared can be discovered.

I have not been able to get a response from the local newspaper to see if they are interested in doing a followup article about the search. I will be calling them today to get an answer.

I just recieved a phone call from the staff photographer and have made an appointment for Annasmom and I to be photographed placing one of the fliers in a mailbox along Purissima Creek Road (an "action shot").

The paper seems to be interested in making this a story about the continued search and not about Annasmom herself. Annasmom was concerned (and understandably) that the focus not be on her, portaying her as the "greiving mother", but instead be about us and our renewed efforts to locate Anna and uncover the truth of her disappearance.

The most important aspect of getting a story done by the local paper is that it will extend our efforts to locate anybody who may have additional information that has not come forward before now. Quite a few of the current residents of Purissima Creek Road lived there in 1973, but others have continued to live in the HMB area, yet have moved from the place on the road (Annasmom is one example). This will broaden our message beyond the immediate locale of the disappearance and will hopefully turn up new clues.

And as a side note: The picture of us now will show you what we both look like currently instead of what we looked like in the early-to-mid seventies in the book. It promises to be a sobering experience - LOL!

I was considering a disguise...maybe a false beard and a big floppy hat...but I suppose that would defeat the purpose. A big hurrah for Doogie for keeping after this.

I imagine some of the residents have relocated since then. If you have the names of some of the old residents I will do a search for the current addresses so we can mail fliers to them too.

I guess we can always check the county property records, for the previous owners. Just a suggestion. I want to help in any way I can.

Three names occur to me: Margaret Machado, the mail person; her daughter Charline Machado Avila, who was interviewed at the time, and Lindsay Mickles, who owned the property. I never knew the names of the people who boarded horses there, or who belonged to the hunt club which had a shack up on the hill, or of the motorcycle club which sometimes used the property. I was glad to see Joe Ford back on the forum. Joe, do you remember any of those names? Pookie, for instance, one of the horse people? We didn't have much to do with them, so we never knew them.

We do not have a list of the residents of the road in 1973, but one of my stops this weekend will be the HMB library to see if they have a "Polk's Directory" from that year. This directory is like a phonebook, but also is sorted by street address. Local libraries usually have these on file.

As far as the Brad Pitt idea: I was speaking to a blind woman at one of my shows and she commented that she always recognizes me by my voice, but had no idea what I looked like. She mentioned that she had lost her sight a couple years earlier, so I explained that she should think of a body-building Brad Pitt, only better looking. I don't think she bought it... :blushing:
