wow, how bizarre. I just noticed that the watch map image I posted the other day has changed to reflect the current watches. I assumed I was simply posting a static image, not an updating changing one. How cool.

Weather service: Storms produce tornadoes in Michigan

Goodrich — Severe thunderstorms that pushed across Michigan's Lower Peninsula produced several tornadoes, downed trees and power lines, and damaged homes and businesses, the National Weather Service said.

No injuries were reported early Wednesday in the Flint area, which was among those hit by the Tuesday storms.

The weather service said a tornado touched down around 10 p.m. near Goodrich High School, southeast of Flint in Genesee County. A half-hour earlier, it said winds knocked down a home about 5 miles south of Swartz Creek.

Homes also were reported destroyed or damaged in the Fenton and Mount Morris Township areas...

A tornado touched down nearby already hard-hit Oklahoma City and adjacent parts of Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri faced tornado warnings Thursday.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., warns there is a moderate risk of severe weather over much of eastern and central Oklahoma. Weather could worsen later into western Arkansas, southeastern Kansas and southwestern Missouri.

A tornado watch was posted for Oklahoma at early afternoon, with supercells possibly producing 3-inch hail and some tornadoes, some of which could be significant. When storms form, they will generally move toward the east.


CBS News affiliate KWTV reports huge wall clouds developed into a twister in Ripley, about an hour and 20 minutes away from Oklahoma City, at about 4:30 p.m. ET. More wall clouds were spotted in Chickasha, about 45 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. The tornadoes are not expected to be as strong as the twister that ripped through Moore, Okla., last Monday.

I'm in Oakland County, Michigan (north-suburban Detroit), and we are in the midst of round two of heavy rain, pea-size hail, thunder, and lightning. It rained buckets about two hours ago, stopped, sun came out, and concrete surfaces were dry. It got cloudy and very dark about 20 minutes ago followed closely by heavy rain, hail beating against windows, thunder, and scary lightning.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Pouring rain pelted much of the Midwest on Thursday, flooding rivers for a second time this season and leaving beleaguered residents and local officials fearing another onslaught of water.

And with more rain in the forecast, residents in towns along the swollen Mississippi and Missouri rivers can do little more than wait to see how bad it gets.

Both rivers were already flooding Thursday, as were many smaller waterways in Missouri, Iowa and Illinois. As much as 4 inches of rain were expected in parts of those states through Sunday..............

The water that poured over a levee in April has never gone away. Since mid-April, Gibson's land has been cut off from roads. He uses a small boat to get to his car, parked at a duck club about a five-minute boat ride away.

"It's a pain," Gibson said. "It's worse when it's storming, being on that boat with lightning."

(CNN) -- People in the central United States suffered through yet more severe weather Thursday -- in the form of torrential rain, golf-ball-size hail and damaging winds, including a few reported tornadoes -- and braced for even more storms to come.
Tornado warnings were issued at one point or another Thursday afternoon for portions of Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Wisconsin and Oklahoma. Just 10 days ago Oklahoma was in the cross hairs of a powerful tornado that left 24 dead.
Such warnings go out when witnesses or radar indicate a tornado. The National Weather Service, in fact, noted there were reports of tornadoes in at least six communities in western Arkansas -- as far west as Polk, as far south as Garland County, and as far north as Oden.
Montgomery County Deputy Sheriff Thomas Goad said that strong winds had contributed to injuries and damage in the small town of Oden. The National Weather Service gave more detail, saying two were reportedly injured, a house was destroyed, power lines were knocked down, and Highway 88 was blocked.
