Pulling third graders out. Lance, reporter, is losing it - God help him.

New tornado Halls Valley take cover. Pauls Valley?

  • #222
Paul's Valley, most immediate threat to life.

Reporting that there WERE children in the schools that were hit. Rescue is currently underway. The schools held the children until the danger was past, not released to anyone other than parents.

Children have been hurt. Many people trying to rescue them now. 3rd graders are being removed from the building.

The reporter was crying and had a note of panic in his voice when reporting this. No basement. No communal room. Reinforced windowless interior rooms were used as shelters, unknown if that is what happened today.

There will be terrible damage and likely high loss of life in this storm.

The other school is Briarwood elementary, the children were held rather than released due to the impending storm omg

Put the school on lockdown and notified the parents that the children wouldn't be released . The parents that could come get them could if time allowed.

So many warnings in Oklahoma, MsFacetious do you have your link to the map with tornado warnings on it?

  • #226
Weather guy on KFOR saying worst tornado damage in history. (I don't know how he knows this but he said it)

I think he was comparing it (strength, duration, populated areas) to the previous "record holder" in 1999.

Looking at the line of this storm...I hope it loses all of it's momentum. Or else I might be sitting here at midnight tonight wondering if the tornado is coming for me!! And not being born and raised in Tornado Country, a nighttime one terrifies me!!! Earthquakes...now that is something that I shrug off. Was raised 35 miles west of San Francisco.

I swear, since I have moved east (getting further east with each move)...I still go back and forth whether it's better to have some sort of notice - hurricane, tornado, etc - vs no warning with an earthquake. I swear, I think I would still rather live with earthquakes!!! The anticipation is so dreadful...

God Bless those in OKC and any further locations affected tonight. Keep safe if you are in the path!!!

Fran, Is there any way we can send money to help these poor people? If one can, even 5~10. would help. ASPCA could replace some of the poor horses with the neglected they get. I was in one in Cleveland '53 and its horrible! Please let us know if we can help.. God be with them..their babies in school!!!

75 kids in the area that was destroyed (Plaza school). Firemen and first responders are there and working to free the kids. One child, standing and hugging someone. Other people transported. Children were in hallway, which was considered the 'safe place' in the school. Also staff members, but not counted.

Now saying the 'nado was an F5, will be worst in history. Damage for miles, total destruction for 1/2 mile around school.

30 children have been pulled out, but unclear if that's from the 75 in the hall way or another group of children from a different area.

OMG Prayig for these children. Reporter sees a child and a lady lying down inside elementary school. 75 children were inside Plaza Towers elementary.

ITA-They knew this storm was coming..
why send them to school..

Have you ever lived in a high risk state for tornado activity?
It's not scientific like a hurricane warning system is. It's russian roulette.
I've never heard of places closing down because of tornado warnings. I've heard of schools closing early though if severe weather is imminent.

The thing is parents have to go to work regardless so what to do with the children? Tornado hits are so random. Maybe this will change the way severe warning days will be handled. Until now, they've never been this predictable that I'm aware of.

The horse farm is on the left and Plaza Towers Elementary school that got hit the hardest is due east and slightly north. (about a mile east)

Briarwood Elementary is slightly south of the horse farm almost touching fences if you will.
