My first thought was it was possibly her "time of the month"? (I didn't post that before now cuz my tummy gets queazy thinking about it.)

I thought about that, too. I would think if it was an old stain in the middle of the bed...it would have been obvious to LE and unrelated to the case. If she were menstruating at the time, I still don't see them taking it as evidence in the crime scene...but I guess it is possible they would have to take it in anyway.
