I am so upset that this has happened to the Flores family; Det Flores seems like such a lovely person, and I'll bet his whole family is too. But I'm angry as well. I do a lot in the backcountry, and many times I have seen extremely irresponsible and unsafe behavior tolerated or even demanded by Boy Scout leaders. I have, for instance, seen scouts permitted to play barefoot in the woods, leaders insisting that scouts use a type of stove that easily flares into the face, hogging shelters, loading up young kids with packs that weigh more than they do when it's completely unnecessary, running around screaming and yelling, and contaminating water sources. Putting readily accessible zip lines within easy reach of 15 year olds (when, for example, home swimming pools are required to be fenced because they are attractive nuisances) makes me ill.
