I have a question for everyone: each state has a 'nickname'. Indiana goes by the Hoosier State. We became known for this because, many, many, many years ago when a person who came upon a house and knock, the resident would call out 'who's there'? So there it is folks. Hoosier State.
Now my question is for you; what is your states nickname and how did it become known for that name?
TEXAS - the Lone Star State - The Republic of Texas, was from 1836 until it agreed to join the United States in 1845. Sixteen years later, it seceded along with 10 other states to form the Confederacy. The Civil War forced it back into the Union, where it has stayed ever since. The six flags that have flown over Texas—Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States and the Confederacy.
The nickname The Lone Star State originates from the star on the 1836 flag of the Republic of Texas. The Texas flag is the official symbol of the "Lone Star State" because of its single bright star gracing the red, white and blue banner. The colors in the flag symbolize bravery (red), purity and liberty (white), and loyalty (blue). The "Lone Star" is also found on the Texas flag, the great seal, the state commemorative quarter (above), and is recognized as the official state gemstone cut of Texas.

Only found along the Gulf Coast, it is unique because it is one of few shells that open on the left side.
And the state pepper is the jalapeño.
The state grass is the sideoats grama.
The state motto is "friendship".
The state vegetable is the 1015 sweet onion and the state fruit is the Texas red grapefruit.
The official dish of Texas is chili.
Texas's official dance is the square dance.
The Armor-plated armadillo is the offical state small mammal and the Guadalupe bass is the state fish.
Texas's official flying mammal of the Mexican Free-tailed Bat.
The state large mammal is the Longhorn.
and we have our own common accent and/or dialect spoken by natives throughout Texas is sometimes referred to as Texan English, which itself is a sub-variety of a broader category of American English known as Southern American English. (such as hey y'all watch this - and Oh hell no).
