Beloved Historical Fiction Author E.L. Doctorow Dead At 84

"NEW YORK (AP) — Writer E.L. Doctorow, who wryly reimagined the American experience in such novels as "Ragtime" and "The March" and applied its lessons to the past and future in fiction and nonfiction, has died. He was 84.

His son, Richard Doctorow, confirmed he died Tuesday at a New York hospital from complications of lung cancer. He lived in New York and Sag Harbor..."

E.L. Doctorow with Roger Rosenblatt- April 29, 2009 - (he's very funny) :)

"Author and Bronx native E.L. Doctorow is interviewed by Roger Rosenblatt. They speak about Doctorow’s time as a student at Bronx High School of Science and his novel, Homer & Langley."

(FYI: He must have been very smart; it's hard to get into Bronx High School of Science. )

Remember when I posted about my cousin and I going to the Frazier History Museum to see the traveling “Love, Shirley Temple” exhibit? We were the last city of the traveling tour before they went to Kansas City, Mo. to auction everything off.

The very first little dress Shirley ever wore in her break out role in the 1934 movie “Stand Up and Cheer” sold for $75,000! It had red poka dots on it, and I saw the tag that said $20,000 for the opening bid!
Here is a complete list of what everything sold for at auction, if anyone is interested.

Love, Shirley Temple: Movie Costumes, Dolls, and Childhood Memorabilia from Her Personal Archives. The childhood collection comprising over 500 items from 1928-1940.

El Nino intensifying, could rival strongest in recorded history

"...The present El Nino event, on the cusp of attaining “strong” intensity, has a chance to become the most powerful on record...

The presence of a strong El Nino almost ensures that 2015 will become the warmest on record for Earth and will have ripple effects on weather patterns all over the world.
A strong El Nino event would likely lead to enhanced rainfall in California this fall and winter, a quieter than normal Atlantic hurricane season, a warmer than normal winter over large parts of the U.S., and a very active hurricane and typhoon season in the Pacific..."

Another Month, Another Global Heat Record Broken _ by Far

"Earth dialed the heat up in June, smashing warm temperature records for both the month and the first half of the year.
Off-the-charts heat is "getting to be a monthly thing," said Jessica Blunden, a climate scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. June was the fourth month of 2015 that set a record, she said.
"There is almost no way that 2015 isn't going to be the warmest on record," she added...

June was warm nearly all over the world, with exceptional heat in Spain, Austria, parts of Asia, Australia and South America. Southern Pakistan had a June heat wave that killed more than 1,200 people — which, according to an international database, would be the eighth deadliest in the world since 1900. In May, a heat wave in India claimed more than 2,000 lives and ranked as the fifth deadliest on record..."

8 Things The 'Golden Girls' Taught Us About Sex

"Forget "Sex and the City." Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia were the real trailblazers when it came to women's sexuality on TV. Known for its raunchy humor, "The Golden Girls" -- which premiered in 1985 -- was years before its time. Here are eight invaluable lessons about sex we learned thanks to "The Golden Girls."..

I love Allrecipes, I'm on there all the time looking for new recipes, even have my own recipe file, lol. This recipe for crab cakes sounds really good. My problem is we can't really get fresh crab meat here. :( I might find some "fresh frozen". Or even order it. That's usually good, though expensive with shipping costs. My DH and I are always looking for good crab cakes when we venture off into seafood country. Just wish we could do it a little more often. Anyway, let me know how they turn out.

BBM The crab cakes came out good- maybe a little bland because I left out the Old Bay seasoning

I ate 2- one with some hot sauce and one with a squeeze of lemon (both were good tasting). I enjoyed them. I'm going to look for some more recipes for crab cakes to make one day (when I have more $ to buy the crab that is- it's so expensive :gaah:)

My son hated them...

DD woke me up @3a.m. Only 4.0, no biggie, but the evangelists will think California is doomed with this, the fire that trapped the freeway, and the flooding! Two bright sides for me this morning: 1) my former nextdoor neighbors lied to me- the earthquake fault that supposedly ran right under my street doesn't- it's a few blocks away instead, and more importantly:2) my brand new French Doors are being installed right now!!! And hubby said I may also get some new tile where the carpeting is ripping right there! Will post some pictures later on if I can!:happydance::loveyou::great::skip:

View attachment 78501Don't know how to rotate photos, sorry! But one more thing: I have a really cool new decorating phone app- Floorvana by Shaw Floors. You can pick a photo or take a picture, and it will suggest coordinating types of flooring based on the colors you pick!

Nice doors :)

- wish I had the $ to have french doors installed in my living room. :sigh:

Shirley was a beautiful child, IMO, and everyone loved her:

Nice doors :)

- wish I had the $ to have french doors installed in my living room. :sigh:

I have twelve french doors sitting on the back deck, so dh can enclose my front porch, which I don't want, it was something I mentioned a long long time ago, and would rather have the back deck enclosed, so we're t a standstill.

I love crab cakes, and those looked wonderful. I think the first person I saw make them was Justin Wilson, way back on his cooking show in the 80'? Of course he thought everything tasted better with a few glasses of wine. The best fish I've ever had was in Calabash, North Carolina was fresh flounder right out of the ocean. We drove there when we spent a week in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Calabash is most famous, and rightly so, for the delicately seasoned, lightly breaded and fried, incredibly fresh seafood that shares its name. It's been a town staple since 1940, when Lucy High Coleman opened The Original, the, well, original Calabash-style restaurant.

LinasK - Old Town Pizza! They have great pizza, but pretty expense... $$ so we now go to the new Papa Murphy's that opened up, where you buy it NOT cooked yet. Works great for us - 3 meals! Yum!!

Zuri - he'll be calling his heart doctor, but he WILL NOT go back to E.R. - that I know for sure, he hates hospitals. Made him worse than when he walked in last for his back pain... so that won't go over to well... He's taking a nap right now.

One of my front teeth - I only have 6 left on the bottom, where I wear a partial - full dentures on top... :gaah: LOL! anyway, now one of the front teeth started hurting last night and it is has been getting loose for awhile... another :gaah: I have my 50th High school class reunion coming up this Saturday, and I don't want to go without a tooth! you can understand right? :D Oh, and one of my boyfriends from high school sent me an email saying that he saw my name on the list of people going and would be happy to see me there... :waitasec: I had to look up his face in my year book!! I did "vaguely" remember him! another LOL!

I loved the Golden Girls - they got good actors to play off of each other on that one!

El Nino - well, if California gets a LOT of rain - I don't care... :D

Okay - hoping this goes through... :pcguru:

Off to catch up on the Holmes trial, since I spent the last half hour trying to post here... a LOT of buffering... etc. etc.

The news was met with celebrations across England and the world as royal baby fans camped out waiting for news of the birth.

Nice doors :)

- wish I had the $ to have french doors installed in my living room. :sigh:
Thanks! Farmer's Insurance paid for them, since I couldn't recover all the jewelry I lost. I love them, even though they are only primed and still need painting. They just class up my family room so much! It looks like a whole different house. I had this cruddy old frame on the sliding glass doors that was 40 years old and you'd have to fight it to latch it closed. For the last two months since the break-in, I've had to live with a plywood door there. I just sit here and keep taking pictures of my new doors, DH thinks I'm nuts. For the first time in a long time, I'm really happy- now if we could just get our den painted, and get all the furniture out of the rest of the house I'd be good.IMG_1009.jpg

I will be out of commission for a few day...Oral surgeon called and I'm going tomorrow at 7:45am and have my molar that broke off to the gum surgically extracted, instead of the date they gave me. The only can give me locals for the extraction and I sure hope the numb me up good! The only pain meds I can take are Tylenol (unless in a hospital setting). Wish me luck and send good thoughts my way :)

Hope see everyone in a few day...Take care and be happy :) :)
