The topical is what I've used for years, the only problem with my dog is his coat is short and lays down flat, making it impossible to get it completely on his skin, half of it ends up just sitting there without getting absorbed. The oral flea/tick med upsets his stomach, I'm not giving that to him anymore. So this new collar called "Seresto" is according to my vet, completely nontoxic to anyone. I do question if he really knows what he's talking about, or is it just a sales pitch? I mean, who can you really trust these days to tell you the truth about much of anything? Pretty much no one. Thankfully, we have had almost zero problems with fleas or ticks where we live, so we only use it when we travel to Arkansas and places like that where there are a lot of deer ticks. The Seresto collar is supposedly good for 8 months, but I wouldn't leave it on him all the time as there's no need. So I'm thinking I'll at least give it a try.

Mona and Sport have short coats and I put the tip of the little tube under it on the back of their necks and rub it in with it. We're now using Revolution because it does it all. Fleas ticks, ear mites and mange. Eve is our hard dog to give meds to. I use old make her think it's OK by making little cheese balls with american cheese and give her a few and when she's wolfing them down give her the one with the pill and she'll gobble it down. If she does give us a hard time them Anna and I use the old hold her down and stick it down her throat. I straddle her and we pry open her jaws and I have to get it far enough down in her thoart so she'll swallow it and not get it back up and spit it out. After I get the pill in Anna puts peanut butter or jelly in her mouth and she swallows it. We've been out of peanut butter and jelly before and I've used duck or sweet and sour sauce.

I haven't thought of that song in years. It always made me think of what my mother said kids were told back in the thrives. Children should be seen and not heard.

Dasiymae, how is your shoulder doing?

It's seventy three degrees now. It's going to be eighty four for the high today. Twenty degrees cooler than last week at a hundred and four. I almost needed a sweatshirt or two when I took the dogs out.

I bought a whole chicken to cut up and fry this weekend. IIRC you cut off the drumsticks and thighs first, then the wings and cut the breast from the back of the chicken and cut them in to. I have a big cast iron skillet and it makes the best friend chicken and gravy.

I've started to notice shortages in fresh produce and other things and the price is going up. If you find a good deal on eggs you can freeze them and use them later. Just crack them open and put in ice trays and freeze.

Loved the posts about Big Pharma. The drug companies are now using all kinds of binders or inert ingredients that patients are becoming sensitive to, like me. I have had a horrific allergic reaction to Flexeril, which I have taken in the past for severe muscle spasms and I am a mess.

Several weeks ago, I was trying to open the blind in the living room to get some natural light in to give me a better idea of a fabric color. I had to lean over a chair to do so and lost my balance, yet again, and fell, taking the chair down with me. I tried to break my fall with my left arm and in doing so, nailed my deltoid tendon. Since then, I have been in agony, unable to use my left arm for much of anything.

I figured it would go away, but oh no. The spasm spread to include my neck, scapula, back and whole arm. I put my arm in a sling and iced it, but that is annoying so I had the deltoid tendon injected with Kenalog, hoping that would help. I had to up my Prednisone and took Flexeril, hoping to break the cycle.

My face and neck blew up to the point where there is no delineation between my jaw and neck and I look ridiculous. Tomorrow I have to have an MRI to see if I tore the tendon and they are also going to MRI my back as my legs are really weak. I haven't been able to do any painting or cleaning or decorating or anything.

KCL tried helping my arm when I saw her a couple of weeks ago. I hadn't said anything about it, but she noticed it right away as my whole shoulder hangs down. Oh how I wish she was closer. Sometimes conventional medicine can really backfire or not work and I am so ready for this to be done and over with. No sense in complaining, but here I am doing just that. I am very very annoyed with myself for sure. So no further progress in my decorating world lol.

She's acting normal and begging, which is hard because her diet is restricted right now. We took her for a long walk tonight and she really enjoyed that! The hardest part is still the stupid schedule of having to feed her 4x/day and give her the Carafate 3x/day. That's going to get really hard in the next 3 days- I have places to go, but her restrictions are easing- no restrictions on the amount of water (just can't give it to her 1 hr before/after the Carafate), and she's done with the anti-vomiting pill and the cottage cheese and rice- tomorrow back to just dry food, her anti-biotic, Prilosec, and the Carafate. I had a really awkward phone conversation though today. The vet who prescribed the Rimadyl and Tramadal called me today to see how she was doing. When I told him I'd made a follow-up appointment with a different vet in the same practice for tomorrow, he got upset and blamed it on the schedulers. (I hadn't planned to go back to him, but he wants to see her), so I let him think it was a scheduling error and he kept the time slot, but changed the appointment to him- so I'm stuck with him. He did admit her emergency visit was due to the drugs, but he said she had Rimadyl 11/2 years ago when she got bitten by the Malamutes. So we'll see...

Hope you have good luck getting your baby well again. Don't be afraid to change vets altogether if you don't like what you are hearing.

We finally changed our Vet because they were always charging us for extra things on purpose and we finally figured out what they were doing. We found another Vet and even though its a further drive it is worth it. The new Vet is just as knowledgeable and is much cheaper.

My Yorkie skin condition is being managed and he is doing better but it has never totally gone away. The diagnosis that seems to make the most sense is the Vet says he is allergic to flea bites and even though we have him on the oral flea medicine we think what is happening is he is still getting bit every now and then because we think the fleas are in our carpet and in the grass near the house. Because we have an outdoor cat and he had fleas too.

So we are trying to treat the cat for fleas too but what we think is that we just have way too many fleas in the area that no matter how well controlled some still bite the dog.
At least that is the only thing we have come up with because his skin condition has gotten better but never has gone away.

We control his itching with lots of shampoos and occasional Benadryl and if it gets really bad then he goes in for a Steroid shot which does wonders for the itching. He did not itch at all after the Steroid shot but it only lasted a couple weeks and then he started to scratch again.

The good thing is his skin has gotten better though. Still scaly and some redness but no where near as bad as it was. So we think the allergy to flea bites seems to make the most sense. Some sort of skin allergy which is in his bloodstream because the skin issue is everywhere.

But he is doing much better and at least does not itch constantly now and redness and heat on skin is much better.

Thanks to everyone for all the tips many months ago that helped me get my dog the help he needed.

Morning all!

"Brain sensations" as a side effect ? I think I might could use some of those ! You crack me up, Niner!:floorlaugh:

No joke - it was actually on a drug commercial about side effects, now I don't remember "which" drug though!!

How is your Huz, Niner ? No diagnoses yet?

No, no diagnoses YET!! Waiting... :waiting: for Zuri's husband to help! I did ask my Huz to check over the part I need to send to her this morning, so hopefully he'll be doing that!! Also, he seems to be feeling better; he actually made dinner last night!! So hoping that's a good sign! It only lasts a few days of feeling good!

Niner ... I hope today gives you some answers for hubby's health! We'd all love to see him feeling better. :loveyou:

Hoping too!! He has an appointment next Wednesday - in the morning the regular doctor, who will probably NOT help him in anyway, and then in the afternoon have to drive down to Sacramento to his heart doctor appointment.

YoNo's bandwidth problem apparently started with her computer trying to download Windows 10. It takes a while for the bandwidth percentage to go down as it is carried over week to week and month to month. IIRC, she had posted that she can only post when it goes below 80% or something, otherwise she gets charged extra.

With her son in grad school, I bet she is giving up her use of the computer so he can use his. She is just that kind of mama. :)

Oh YESorNO!! Missing you here!! Maybe your son will let you use the computer each day for a little bit, so we can enjoy your company!! :happydance:

Jingles to Bubby, coffeejunkie!!!!!

Zuri = hope you get better!! I LOVE my massage lady!! I used to go every 2 weeks, but since I retired, had to go for once a month... oh well!

Off to see what's going on around here!

Later! :seeya:

I had linked this thread up thread here. Lumberjill found Susan, where the Scottish police had not been able to. I am truly inspired by her love for her BFF. I am blessed with a BFF and called her just to let her know how much I loved her and that I would go to the ends of the Earth to find her too. We should all be so lucky to have that one person in our lives who is our soft place to fall, to depend on in good times as well as rough, and be able to call them BFF as part of our heart and soul.

Niner, I won't post anything here regarding your DH medical condition as it is not exactly private lol. Xo

Nope, no heart worm.
Would I if I had short haired dogs? I don't know..........
I use flea collars when the monsoon hits, because wolfdogs tend to be a "bus" for fleas. Fleas don't like the WD taste, I guess, so they just catch a ride. Never had ticks in this area, pretty weird.

Catch 22 on a lot of critter things, I think the foundation for all of them is a good diet. JMO.

So since you mentioned critter diets, I want to ask you all what you think of higher protein versus more traditional diets for dogs. I have been giving my dog a high quality kibble that has veggies and added probiotics, essential fatty acids, that sort of thing. Also it has no corn, wheat, or soy. I also supplement it with some of the canned food which he absolutely loves. Our other Schnauzer always had a lot of itching and skin issues until we cut out the corn in his diet so we have avoided that completely with our fur baby now. However, to make it more confusing, some of the brands now provide the higher protein, completely grain free, products. :crosseyed: I just don't know what's best and through research haven't found any real answers and no one I ask seems to know. Actually, the one I'm feeding him now is a higher protein content which I chose due to it's lower fat content for "healthy weight". I started feeding him this not long ago after he had a mild bout of pancreatitis and also for weight loss. TIA for anyone's opinion.

Hatfield, between my son and myself, we have two dogs with (apparently) skin allergies. I discovered that giving one Benadryl every morning has helped them both. Keeps the redness and scratching down considerably. Actually, I started out with one Benadryl twice a day (morning and evening) for a few weeks, then down to one when they were able to go a whole day without incessant itching. The one year we had a horrible flea infestation I washed every article in the house that I could (beddings, blankets, dog beds, toys, etc), sprayed a decent portion in the house (furniture, carpets, floors) with a diluted water/Sevin mix, sprayed the yard where the dogs frequent with Bayer flea product for outside. Now, once or twice a year I spray the yard, and try to wash their beddings, etc once a month. It was a lot of work, but seems to help very much. So far (knock on wood!) no flea problem this year.

Zuri, I hate to hear how much trouble you go through with pai , as I am having many of the same issues. I can try to reach an itchy spot on my back or reaching in the shower and set off a spasm. Danged frustrating, to say the least! I hope you get better soon. I have often wished KCL was accessible for her talents ... a good lady, indeed.

I have followed Susan's disappearance and how she was finally found .... due to her friend's enormous determination. How many can say a BFF would travel from the U.S. to Scotland, out her own life on hold for however long it took, and set up searches that eventually resulted in finding her (now deceased) friend. Truly, that was a remarkable case, and I am so sorry it ended on a sad note. But efforts of the searchers (hippy hippy, too!) and all the help they received was amazing.

ETA... I discovered Benadryl will dissolve in a bit of water, so I put a little warm water in with a pill for the dog, let it dissolve and then mix with about a tablespoon of canned food. They think they are getting a treat every morning.

Bernina helped me a lot in the past and is very knowledgeable about a lot of pets. Others gave me goo help too. Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents since my Yorkies diet is something I also had to deal with.

My dog ended up with Stones many years ago which blocked his urine path and he needed surgery years ago to remove them. After that surgery, we were told to put him on a Canned only food diet to make sure he had more water content in the food and to eliminate SULFITES, CALCITES, etc. and Lots of Additives that helped form the STONES.

Once I did a lot of research about dog food, I also learned a lot of what you are describing and I also eliminated entirely GRAINS. I bolded in your post things I follow too. I have mine on a NO GRAIN Canned dog food and I stick with the brands that are a little more expensive and are supposed to be 100% natural. I have had luck with WELLNESS brand for just 1 example

I like to give him some variety so I sometimes switch brands so he does not get bored with any 1 kind but the main thing is I always stick with CANNED NO GRAIN ALL NATURAL type food and ever since then he never has gotten Stones again.

I also like to HOME COOK him chicken. I boil the chicken and sometimes other meats and supplement his dog food with real meats.

Its just the way I like to feed my dog and he has done pretty well ever since I learned to watch his diet too.

But I am definitely no expert and I maybe making some mistakes so take any of my advice with a grain of salt. LOL :)

Thanks Spellbound so much. Pilling my dog is a nightmare because he is so picky and he learned all the tricks...LOL

But I had no idea Benadryl will dissolve in water and have never tried that. That's a great idea and I have to admit there are times I wanted to give him another dose and due to the difficulty in pilling him I would not give him a dose. Your tip will come in handy for me. I will try that for sure.

My Vet told me I could give him Benadryl more regularly if I needed to and that confirms some of what you are saying.

Thanks again so much.

Linas, I hope you get a clean bill of health for your furbaby tomorrow.

CJ, more Jingles being sent for Bubby.

Hatfield, How often do you shampoo your furbaby? Is it a special shampoo you use? My concern with lots of shampooing, unless you are using a soap-free or moisturizing shampoo (to prevent the skin from becoming dry) is too many baths will strip the coat of natural oils that protect the skin.

Zuri, I'm so sorry for all the suffering you are going through and hope you get some relief soon. As for consults 24/7/365, lol, I can try my best. I suggest to anyone who is upgrading to make sure to always backup your computer before making changes. And honestly, I personally don't recommend the upgrade to Win 10 at this time, but that's just from past experience.

Gigi, you mentioned Pedigree dog food. What timing as I just saw a post from a Pet Nutrition Blogger on FB showing tiny wires imbedded in Pedigree dry dog food. Pictured here: https://www.facebook.com/rodneyhabi...41828.733847063390841/788217281287152/?type=1 Now that's scary.

She's due for her shots in a couple of weeks, so the vet said we shouldn't need an exam when we bring her back. He didn't want to give them to her yesterday, probably a wise decision. We also give her Frontline and Heartworm pills. We changed meds when we discovered Sentinel didn't cover ticks. She got a tick bite 21/2 years ago and was deathly ill because we saw it, but didn't know it was a tick making her so sick. She normally likes to get into the car, except for leaving the vet yesterday. She will try to get her front paws up, and I assist her with climbing the step into the back seat, or my husband will lift her into the cargo area. We need to get a harness, we only have a neck leash for her collar/choke chain.
It turns out she apparently was just a dork and ran full-on into one of the fences, probably chasing a squirrel and didn't stop herself in time/gauge the distance properly. Does anybody else have a dog who's done this???

Our dog runs full-on chasing squirrels, but thankfully has missed the fence. Your poor baby. :(

Good questions and points but no worry there because we don't give him baths too frequently. We usually try to give him one every couple weeks. And we use just an Oatmeal type regular shampoo with no special chemicals. I even found that Baby Shampoo is always a good regular shampoo.

Many months ago we tried some of the Vets special anti-itching shampoos and it made him itch more than ever. LOL So we quit that and just give him normal baths with normal shampoo.

Thanks for asking.

She threw up blood so we had to go to the ER Vet. They hospitalized her and she has to stay 'till tomorrow. It was the Rimadyl. It's like Advil. Gave her Gastritis and maybe Pancreatitis.

Still doing some backtracking here... I had read something about Rimadyl a while back, thought it was on the FDA website but now can't find it there. I did find some other information though at these links. Sounds like it's a very dangerous drug to me. Sure glad your fur baby's doing better.

60+ Ways to Reuse Plastic Bags

In the kitchen...
•When packing up meat to put in the freezer, put smaller portions in cheap plastic bags. Then put those bags inside a larger freezer bag. That way you only throw away the cheaper bags and can reuse the more expensive freezer bag!
•Small bags are great for storing halves of peppers, onions, tomatoes etc.
•Put recipe cards in a clear plastic bag while you cook to keep them from getting messy.
•Put potentially smelly food scraps in a plastic bag in the freezer. When trash day rolls around, throw out the bag.
•Put store bought buns, cookies, bread etc. in a zipper plastic bag to keep them fresh longer. You can reuse the same bag over and over again!
•Keep hands clean while greasing baking pans! Place a plastic bag over your hand and scoop some butter from the tub.
•Pour excess cooking oil and grease (after it’s cooled down) into a plastic bag before throwing it in the trash.
•Cut one corner off a plastic bag to create a makeshift funnel. This trick also works to make a DIY piping bag!
•Put a couple of plastic bags over your hands to use as gloves when working with especially messy foods.
•Peel vegetables into a plastic bag to easily transport peels to your compost bin.
•Put packages of meat on a plastic bag in the refrigerator when defrosting to keep juices from going all over the place.
•Pack lunches in leftover grocery sacks.
•Reuse grocery sacks for more groceries! Some stores will even take them back to reuse them.

In the bathroom…
•Put your tablet or phone in a plastic bag when you want to read in the bathtub.
•Put leftover slivers from soap bars into a plastic bag. When the bag is full, you can melt the pieces together to create a new bar of soap!
•Fill a plastic bag with distilled white vinegar, then tie it around your showerhead to remove soap scum and mildew.
•Store your plunger in a grocery sack.

In the garden…
•You can also cover small pots with plastic bags to create a mini greenhouse and help plants sprout.
•Reuse baggies to create starter pots for plants. Just poke a few holes in the bottoms of the bags, fill with soil and plant your seeds.
•Cut the bottom off a couple of zipper bag, then slide the bags up your legs to protect your knees from getting dirty when weeding the garden.
•If you think an early frost is coming on, cover fragile plants with plastic bags.
•Carry a grocery sack with you as you weed your garden to corral weeds before throwing them away or in your compost bin.
•Tie a grocery sack to your lawn mower to store litter, dog toys, pine cones etc. as you mow the lawn.

More ideas around the house…
•When mailing packages, save money on bubble wrap by inflating plastic bags to use as padding. Old grocery sacks are also great padding! Use this trick when packing away breakable Christmas ornaments as well.
•Create a simple cold pack by placing a damp cloth in a plastic bag and freezing it.
•Put a plastic bag around any outdoor padlocks in the winter to keep them from freezing.
•Grocery store bags make great garbage can liners.
•Save grocery sacks to use at your next yard sale.
•Wrap cold water bottles in a plastic bag before putting them in your purse or backpack.
•Put ice in a plastic bag in your cooler. That way the water stays inside the bag when it starts to melt!
•Punch holes in the non-zippered side of a plastic bag and put it in your three-ring binders to hold pens, pencils, scissors etc.
•Put instruction manuals in plastic bags and tape them to the backs of the corresponding appliances.
•Create a scented sachet by putting a few cotton balls in a plastic bag and adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Poke some oils in the bag and put it in your dresser drawer.
•Fill winter boots or purses you don’t use very often with plastic bags to help them keep their shape.

In the car…
•Keep a plastic baggie in your car/glove compartment to organize receipts.
•Plastic baggies are also great in the car for keeping stamps, envelopes, pens, stationary items, small first aid items etc. handy!
•Put coupons in a plastic baggie to take to the grocery store.
•Put crayons for the kiddos in a plastic baggie on road trips. That way if the crayons melt in a hot car they won’t make a mess all over your seats!
•Tie a grocery sack to the back of a headrest to use as a makeshift trash can.
•Keep plastic bags on hand for family member or friends that tend to get carsick.
•Cover your side mirrors and windshield wipers with plastic bags when it snows to keep ice and snow from accumulating on them.
•Keep some grocery sacks on hand to cover muddy shoes before getting in the car.
•Put wet umbrellas in a plastic bag to keep your seats and floors dry.
•Line the trunk of your car with plastic bags when you buy plants to keep the floor clean.
•Use an old bag to wipe the dipstick when you check your oil.

When traveling…
•Pack shoes in plastic bags when you travel to keep them from getting scuffed and to keep other items in your suitcase from getting dirty.
•Bring along an extra plastic bag to store dirty clothes and underwear.
•Reuse small plastic baggies to pack things like q-tips, cotton balls, hair ties, bobby pins etc.
•Put bottles that have the potential to explode in a baggie.
•Put valuables like your ID, passport, money, phone etc. in a plastic bag when you go to the beach, water park pool etc. to keep them from getting wet.

For kids …
•Create a makeshift toy parachute with a leftover baggie. Get the instructions from Kim at Seven Thirty Three.
•Corral board games pieces with plastic bags so things aren’t missing when you want to play your favorite game!
•Organize tiny doll accessories in plastic bags.
•Put Lego sets in clear plastic bags so kids know what’s in each bag without having to dump them out.
•Put Play-doh in a plastic bag so you can flatten it out for easy storage.
•Send spare clothes or underwear in a plastic bag with kids to school or daycare.
•Keep baggies in your diaper bag for storing dirty diapers or clothes until you can find a trash can or get home.
•Keep extra pacifiers, wipes etc. on hand in a small plastic bag.

For pets…
•One great way to use dirty plastic bags is to pick up dog droppings on walks. If you don’t have a dog yourself donate them to friends and family with dogs or even to your local animal shelter.
•Scoop cat litter with leftover dirty plastic bags. Or you can line the litter box with a plastic bag.

For DIY projects…
•Create a free pillow insert with grocery bags. Get the instructions at In My Own Style.
•Reuse small plastic bags to create travel sewing kits.
•Keep craft supplies like sequins, sticker, glue etc. organized in small bags.
•Wrap a plastic bag tightly around a paintbrush or roller and tie a rubber band around the bottom to seal it. This method will keep paint wet for as long as a full day!
•Use a plastic bag as a paint, wax, stain, or polish applicator.
•Put plastic bags under furniture you are painting. Plastic bags also work great for protecting tables and counters when kids are doing craft projects.

Great ideas, I use a lot of plastic bags and zip locs, but haven't thought of a few of these. And that one about the bag with vinegar on the showerhead I have never heard of. Thanks CJ ! :happydance:

Hatfield, How often do you shampoo your furbaby? Is it a special shampoo you use? My concern with lots of shampooing, unless you are using a soap-free or moisturizing shampoo (to prevent the skin from becoming dry) is too many baths will strip the coat of natural oils that protect the skin.
.

Just wanted to add to that at least for me you are right that I have to be careful about his skin getting too dry because his skin allergy has already made his skin seem very dry.

So I don't want to make it any dryer.

A couple times when he was really bad off and had the inflamed red and HOT skin, I actually rubbed Baby Oil all over him and rubbed it into his skin and he seemed to like that and helped sooth his skin.

The only problem with that is its kind of messy and he rubs himself into the carpet and it kind of stinks. LOL

But for emergency dry skin conditions it was about the only thing that helped sooth his skin.

He is so much better now that I don't have to do things like that anymore but he still has the flaky dry skin so I may consider maybe using a moisturizing shampoo to see if that may help him. I never really thought about that since I hate to use any chemicals on him but maybe something safe would be good.

So THANKS AGAIN to everyone.

With the really tough issues we face with our pets, my experience is probably like a lot of other people. Quite a bit of Trial and Error and the KEY is to recognize what did help your pet.

Its difficult to realize what things help them. Some things like food take a lot of time to recognize what works. So we just need to pay attention and learn what works and avoid things that don't work or are harmful.

Head&Shoulders 2in1 dandruff shampoo with the conditioner built in works well for dogs with dry, itchy skin. My Lab gets dandruff even though we have her on a high quality food with Oils in it- Nutro Ultra.

LOL :)

Thanks Hatfield :) Wellness is what I'm feeding my dog now too, it's the Core grain free, reduced fat kibble but I supplement also with the canned. Also give him cooked chicken from time to time. I pretty much cut out the cheese that he loves because of the fat content. Well, he does get a teensy bit once in a while. Then of course he gets a few small treats each day, and sometimes fresh carrots. One thing my vet suggested was to give him cooked green beans for snacks since they're low calorie and low fat, something I had never thought of.
