It's certainly not perfect, but what kind of broad-sweeping legislation is? I wish people would stop trying to get rid of it, and work instead to make it better, more effective, and more affordable.

There are so many people -- like me -- who need the coverage Obamacare provides. My sincere hope is that, with more information and enlightenment, the conversation can move away from controversy about the Act itself, and towards greater compassion for fellow human beings.

Totally agree! Not perfect YET! But they should be working to make it better, as you say - but all we hear is they want to repeal Obamacare. That's what my Huz has - even though it's call Covered California!

and... I'm a Labradoodle - same as GigiG!

Off to read other threads! :pcguru:

Microsoft Abandons 'Windows 8', Upgrade Now Or Be Cut Off Like Windows XP

"Today is the last day. If you’re still using Windows 8 then it is time to upgrade because from 13 January 2016 Microsoft MSFT +0.00% will no longer release security patches for the new operating system. Any holes hackers find will be left unpatched and the operating system is now fundamentally insecure. It is time to upgrade – and quickly.

To be fair to surprised Windows 8 users, Microsoft has warned about this for some time, though confusion is understandable because its official lifecycle page states ‘Windows 8’ will still receive ‘Mainstream Support’ (new features) until 9 January 2018 and ‘Extended Support’ (security patches) until 10 January 2023. It even puts this in a clear table:..."

Microsoft Warns Windows 7 Has Serious Problems

"...Speaking to Windows Weekly, Microsoft Marketing chief Chris Capossela explained that users who choose Windows 7 do so “at your own risk, at your own peril” and he revealed Microsoft has concerns about its future software and hardware compatibility, security and more...

There’s only one problem with Capossela’s statements: they are complete rubbish.

Windows 7 is no less secure than Windows 10 (it will be supported until 2020) and no less compatible with new hardware and software. In fact its far greater market share means it is developers’ priority and has greater compatibility with legacy programmes and peripherals...

Microsoft has been cranking up the pressure on Windows 7 and Windows 8 users to upgrade and, in my opinion, the ‘balance’ was replaced by ‘threat’ a long time ago due to mandatory Windows 10 downloads, automatic upgrade attempts and now Capossela’s claims which add up to nothing more than deliberate misinformation designed to unsettle users...."

Last chance to upgrade IE or switch browsers as Microsoft's mandate looms

"Nearly 340 million people who run Microsoft's Internet Explorer have just a week to upgrade or switch browsers, or face a shutoff of the security patch spigot.

On Jan. 12, Microsoft will serve up the final security updates for all instances of Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) and IE8 and for most of the copies of IE9 and IE10 now on customers' PCs.

That's the deadline Microsoft set a year and a half ago, when it unexpectedly announced that most users would have to be running IE11 by that date. After Jan. 12, Microsoft will support IE9 only on the rarely used Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, and IE10 only on Windows Server 2012. Everyone else must be running IE11 or Edge to continue to receive security updates and technical support..."

Microsoft is pulling the plug on Internet Explorer 8, 9, and 10 next Tuesday

"Microsoft is ending support for Internet Explorer 8, 9, and 10 next week on January 12th, releasing a final patch encouraging users to upgrade to one of the company's more recent browsers. The end of support means that these older versions of Internet Explorer will no longer receive security updates or technical support, making anyone who uses them much more vulnerable to hackers. A recently-announced patch will deliver the last few bug fixes, as well as an "End of Life" notification telling users to upgrade to IE 11 or Microsoft Edge — the company's successor to Internet Explorer, built for Windows 10..."

Massive Windows 10 Success Has Six Nasty Surprises

"Sometimes showing off has a way of coming back to bite you. In an understandably celebratory post Microsoft MSFT -3.77% has revealed Windows 10 is now active on over 200 million devices (including Xbox One upgrades and Windows 10 Mobile smartphones). Then it made a series of boasts which exposed something rather shocking…

In an attempt to illustrate just how much Windows 10 users love the new operating system, Microsoft rolled out stat after stat about growing adoption and momentum (Black Friday and Christmas play their part here). But then things got weird:

...Microsoft is tracking exactly how long every single user is using Windows 10. Then things got ever weirder as Mehdi announced: “Here are a few fun facts on what people have been doing on Windows 10”...

Yes, Microsoft admitted it not only logs its users time on Windows 10 but also their time using Microsoft Edge… and gaming… and streaming games… and counting your search queries… and every single time a user opens a photo..."

The Tough Life of Toni Jo Henry

"Religion was apparently very important to Toni Jo Henry, who went to her death at age 26 in the Louisiana electric chair in 1942.

When she was executed, Toni Jo held a small gold crucifix in her hands, a symbol of her new-found Catholic faith. When she killed Joseph P. Calloway, 42, a Houston car salesman who had the bad luck to pick up Toni Jo and her accomplice Finnon Burks, she ordered him to his knees in a cold rice field and told him to pray.

Then she put a bullet in his skull...."

Powerball's big bait and switch

"The likelihood of someone winning the estimated $1.5 billion jackpot in the Powerball lottery on Wednesday is very slim.

And that's not just because the odds of winning are 292 million to one.

It's because the jackpot is actually $930 million (before taxes) if the winner decides to take a lump sum payment. And almost all winners opt for the lump sum.

Lotteries always advertise the larger amount, presumably to avoid confusion. But the jackpot would really only be $1.5 billion if the winner opts for a 29-year payout..."

NEW PROSTATE CANCER TREATMENT OFFERS NON-SURGICAL ALTERNATIVE (with clip)

"...It's non-invasive, non-surgical, no radiation, no blood loss, get off the table, go home, very quick recovery," Gill explained.

After taking detailed images, surgeons determine where the most aggressive cancer is located in the prostate. Then, without destroying any tissue or surrounding nerves, a highly focused beam targets and kills the tumor.

"It absolutely destroys it with heat," Gill said...."

Hungry, Disabled Man Calls Police... They Respond

The Tennessee town of Mount Pleasant is living up to its name through its police officers, who responded to a call from an elderly disabled man in the best way possible. WKRN reports that the PD received a call Saturday evening from the 79-year-old resident, who said he lived on a fixed Social Security income and that he hadn't had a bite to eat in two days. A caretaker had stolen his debit card the weekend before, he noted. So the officers showed up at his door with $160 worth of food (enough to last a month, per WAFF) that they paid for themselves—and they even put it all away for him.

"We would like to commend these fine Mount Pleasant Police Officers for going above and beyond the call of duty," a post put up Monday on the police department's Facebook page reads. They also arrested a suspect in the debit card theft: 36-year-old Tammy Brooks, per WKRN. And the officers decided to take their good deed further: They've since started a food pantry and are now asking for donated canned goods to help others in similar situations, per the station.

Playing the $1.5 billion Powerball? These are the numbers that get drawn the most

"While the Powerball drawing is random, one statistician conducted research a few years back and allegedly found a pattern which, according to his claims, might increase a person’s odds of winning ever so slightly.

According to Dr. Min Su Kim, who teaches statistics at Southern University, a close examination of Powerball winning numbers over a period of 10 years revealed a pattern.

'The Powerball drawing consists of five white balls and one red Powerball. Dr. Kim went back 10 years and found the top 5 numbers that have won millions of dollars for thousands of people. Dr. Kim says the most frequently drawn Powerball number for the past 10 years is number 20. It is followed by 37, 2, 31, and 35.

As for those white balls, the most popular is number 42. It is closely followed by 16, 35, 26, and 19.

“If you pick these numbers, there’s probably more probability to win the grand prize,” Dr. Kim says.'..

Interestingly, other studies which claim to chart the most frequently drawn Powerball numbers have reached different conclusions, in part because the Powerball rules changed slightly in 2012.

For instance, LottoNumbers’ own study found that the most frequently picked Powerball numbers are 20 and 6. The most frequently picked white ball numbers are 26, 41, 16, 22, 42, 35, and 39. So there is some interesting overlap there, specifically with numbers 16, 35, and 26.

As for white Powerball numbers which have popped up the most since 2012, the following chart should come in handy.

lotto-chart.png

The list of most common red Powerball numbers under the new 2012 rules is as follows.

lotto-redball.png

....That being said you might as well try Hurley’s magical lotto numbers from LOST: 4,8,15,16,23 and 42...."

I like that idea of getting rid of the insurance companies altogether. Or maybe just limit them to hospital coverage.

I bet doctors would be more reasonable with their charges if insurance companies were out of the loop.

I remember one time a long time ago I went to a doctor for some sort of ailment and they were going to charge me about 150.00 dollars for the office visit and asked for my insurance card. I explained to them that I worked construction and didn't have any insurance so I asked them if I could pay 1/2 now and asked if they could bill me for the rest.

Once they knew the charges were going to be coming out of my pocket, they reduced the bill right there on the spot to 75.00

At first I was happy about it but the more I thought about it later, I realized they were more than willing to bill insurance for as much as they could get but when they knew it was real money coming out of someone's pocket then they charged a realistic amount.
I'm still mad about it. :)

Hatfield! How lovely your doctor was to lower the cost. It is such a shame that the doctors are forced to bill the insurance companies what they have to in order to be paid something on the dollar billed.

Can you imagine selling Girl Scout cookies for $5 a box and my telling you, no, I am only going to pay you half? After I had eaten the whole box? Because I thought that $2.50 was more reasonable? Hello?

Sorry. I just see how hard my DH works and all that is involved in primary care. The insurance companies are unregulated so guess who ends up picking up the tab...
