They say the third time is the charm, so let me try again. Thank you all for the birthday wishes! How nice to be here with friends I've known 3 years! Tonight I went out for dinner at a buffalo wings place and enjoyed dinner very much - and they have the best cole slaw in the world.

Then I came home and watched Serena easily win, and I was happy because hell hath no fury when this queen doesn't win. LOL

And here's an update on the food stamp issue. I found this today and due to the severe flooding here last Oct. here is what DSS says:

Current SNAP recipients in the zip codes below DO NOT need to come to a local county office to receive DSNAP benefits; they will automatically receive a supplement on their EBT cards:

Clarendon – 29102, 29125, 29148, 29111
Colleton – 29488, 29945, 29446
Darlington – 29069, 29532
Dorchester – 29456, 29420, 29472, 29483, 29485
Florence – 29560, 29501, 29506, 29541
Georgetown – 29440, 29510, 29554, 29576, 29585
Newberry – 29075, 29126, 29127
(shortened for this post)

I've missed being here but was on FB mostly following the Kaitlin Akens case. Sadly she has not surfaced anywhere and missing now from VA for over a month.

Blessings to you and your friends and family who are not feeling well.

:loveyou: to those who made my day special!

Yay daisymae, you were here! :loveyou: Glad you had a very nice day for your birthday. I hope the good feeling continues today. Sounds like you solved the dilemma of the food stamps. Good for you.

Busy, busy, busy this week. And it is snowing here right now. I hate driving in snow :gaah:

daisymae, I'm sending you BEST BIRTHDAY WISHES!
Stay healthy and enjoy all the wonderful surprises this year will offer you.

Still snowing- maybe another 2-3" fell last night :sigh:

I managed to solve my frozen waste drain problem last night after some research on Google :) I found that common salt and hot water down the toilet bowls and tub
drains melted the ice. :happydance:

And I found out that dripping the faucets is what caused the waste drains to freeze in the first place, so I'm not doing that anymore.

Texas Set To Execute Man Amidst Claims That No Murder Took Place

"Lawyers for Richard Masterson, convicted of strangling a man to death, say he is innocent and that the victim died of a heart attack...."

DID A DUBIOUS CONFESSION SWAY A MEDICAL EXAMINER’S AUTOPSY IN A TEXAS DEATH PENALTY CASE?

"...Masterson confessed to Houston police that he’d killed Honeycutt by strangling him in a sleeper hold. After a two-day trial in 2002, Masterson was found guilty of murder; a day later he was sentenced to death. This Wednesday, January 20, Texas plans to execute him by lethal injection — the state’s first execution of 2016.

Masterson claims he is an innocent man. At trial, he recanted his confession,..

Jurors were unconvinced, however, relying in large part on the testimony of Texas medical examiner Paul Shrode, who conducted the autopsy on Honeycutt and provided the critical evidence that Masterson was guilty of murder: Blood spots known as petechiae, caused by ruptured capillaries, had been found around Honeycutt’s eyes. Shrode said this was an indication of death by strangulation.

Yet there is evidence to suggest that Honeycutt was not murdered, but instead may have died from a sudden heart attack during sex that included erotic asphyxiation. Masterson’s lawyer, Washington, D.C.-based attorney Gregory Gardner, believes that Shrode’s analysis was skewed by his knowledge of the confession..."

Colorado cinema killer James Holmes transferred to third prison

"Colorado movie theater gunman James Holmes has been moved to a different prison for the third time since his conviction last year for shooting dead 12 moviegoers in 2012, a corrections official said on Tuesday.

Holmes was moved this month under an interstate agreement, which allows transfers from other jurisdictions, the spokeswoman said, but she declined to say why he was moved, if he was transferred out of state or to a federal prison...

In a videotaped examination by a psychiatrist that was played for jurors, Holmes said he could hear other inmates calling him "a baby killer and stuff", an apparent reference to his youngest victim, six-year-old Veronica Moser-Sullivan."

Mother 'lied when she told cops her daughter, 8, was killed when a gun fell off a table and accidentally fired' as her son is arrested over claims he was holding the weapon when it went off

"Sharia Lynch was found with bullet wound to her head at home in Georgia
Her mother Marsha Lynch, 45, also suffered a gunshot injury to her leg
She told officers handgun fell off table and discharged after hitting the floor
Police say forensic investigations show her order of events is not true...

Forensic pathologists with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab said the autopsy showed the bullet hit Sharia Lynch's head first and then hit Marsha Lynch's leg, Henson said.

That means the story about the gun falling off the table is not true, he added.

He said authorities still believe the shooting was accidental, but they believe Marsha Lynch's son, 23-year-old Quincy Lynch, was holding the gun when it fired.

Derrick Todd Lee in fourth day of medical treatment outside the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola

"Derrick Todd Lee, the 47-year-old St. Francisville man convicted in the murders of two women and suspected in the deaths of five other women, was in his fourth day of treatment outside the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola on Tuesday for unspecified medical reasons.

Lee’s attorney, Gary Clements...“He’s a human being. He has a family. We’re gonna take care of it. Just let the man get his medical treatment,” Clements said.
lements said privacy laws like the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act prevent him from talking about Lee’s ailment. “These (laws) don’t disappear when you get on death row,” Clements said.

Department of Public Safety and Corrections spokeswoman Pam Laborde said Lee had been transported Saturday somewhere beyond the boundaries of Angola prison, where Lee is on death row for the 2002 slaying of Charlotte Murray Pace, 22, and is serving a life sentence in the 2002 murder of Geralyn Barr DeSoto, 21. Family of convicted killer Guillermo Aillon says exhuming body from Connecticut veterans’ cemetery ‘inhumane’

"...Aillon, who died April 29, 2014, was convicted in 1984 of murder in the stabbing deaths of his estranged wife, Barbara, and her parents, George and Bernice Montano. They died in their North Haven home in 1972.

Aillon received a prison sentence of 75 years to life. In the spring of 2014 he became seriously ill and prison officials transferred him to a medical facility in Rocky Hill. He died about a month later.

His family members provided veterans officials with a copy of his discharge papers but they did not tell the officials of his criminal record.

“They never asked us,” Golas told the Register Wednesday. “We didn’t know anything about this law. Now we know!”...

Golas noted, “It’s almost two years he’s been buried there. Now they’re going to disturb his body? It’s very inhumane. They’re going to remove his body that’s now decaying? How inhumane are you going to get? How petty?”

“He was persecuted in life; now he’s being persecuted in death,” Golas added. “He’s dead; what else are they going to do to him? How much do you want to punish him?”

Some members of the Golas family still maintain he was innocent of the murders. But Golas said, “He did get convicted of a capital crime.” He also acknowledged the murders were “horrific.”

But Golas added, “This was something that was done in the past.” He pointed out of Aillon, “He served our country.”.."

Nassau County Police Officer Joseph Olivieri was struck and killed after arriving to investigate a pair of accidents Ryan allegedly caused in October 2012...

Gooding Said He Didn't Want to Meet With O.J. Simpson

"Actor Cuba Gooding, Jr., who portrays O.J. Simpson in FX's 10-part miniseries on the 1995 murder trial, said he didn't want to meet the former football star as part of his research for taking on the role.

Gooding, who would not reveal at a news conference Saturday his opinion on whether Simpson stabbed his former wife Nicole and her friend Ronald Goldman to death in June 1994, said the Simpson he needed to portray in the television film was a much different man then, swaggering and confident.

"I had no desire to visit him in his present condition, being incarcerated and being a shell of a man," he said. Gooding said he gained weight and it took him a month to recover from the grueling six-month filming.

The project, with executive producer Ryan Murphy and actors like John Travolta, David Schwimmer, Malcolm Jamal-Warner and Gooding, has been getting strong word-of-mouth before its Feb. 2 premiere. Based on a book by CNN's Jeffrey Toobin, writers and producers said they worked hard to make the docudrama as authentic as possible..."

Something nicer:

The life of Shelagh Gordon

"Sometimes, even after all this time, a newspaper’s work simply takes my breath away. Such was the case with The Shelagh Gordon Project.

Last winter, the Toronto Star sought to describe the impact of one “ordinary” person on the lives of those around her. From its own obituaries, editors pulled the name of Shelagh Gordon, who died on Feb. 13. “When Gordon’s obituary appeared in the Star, with its description of her as ‘our rock, our good deed doer, our tradition keeper, our moral compass,’ we knew we’d found the perfect subject,” editors wrote.

The Star’s response was likely unprecedented in the annals of journalism. It sent 20 staffers to the woman’s funeral. Another half-dozen editors, designers and online experts also took part. The result is beyond spectacular...

Our world is a collection of small revelations, of little people doing things we think of as ordinary. Community newspapers exist to bring those snapshots of unexamined life into focus. I was profoundly moved by The Shelagh Gordon Project and I bet you will be too. How can you shed an extraordinary light on the ordinary in your hometown?"

https://wicknews.wordpress.com/2012/08/03/the-life-of-shelagh-gordon/
--

A sad, but lovely story con't:

Shelagh was here — an ordinary, magical life

Shelagh Gordon died suddenly at 55 in February, 2012, leaving an ordinary but magical life. A Star team of reporters and photographers joined those paying witness.
"I met Shelagh Gordon at her funeral.

She was soap-and-water beautiful, vital, unassuming and funny without trying to be. I could feel her spirit tripping over a purse in the funeral hall and then laughing from the floor.

She was both alone and crowded by love. In another era, she’d have been considered a spinster — no husband, no kids. But her home teemed with dogs, sisters, nieces, nephews and her “life partner” —a gay man — who would pass summer nights reading books in bed beside her wearing matching reading glasses...

Shelagh made people around her feel not just loved but coveted. That was the golden thread that stitched together the ordinary seams of her life...

Funerals are as much collective meditations as tearful goodbyes to one person. We use the departed life as a lens to assess our own. In that way, Shelagh Gordon is the perfect choice of an allegedly ordinary local woman whose life was actually huge in scope and as worthy of scrutiny as any big-life celebrity. She is you. She is us...

Shelagh had found her calling — loving people fiercely and with abandon..

...“What is a life worth?”

In the past, I have often answered this question with achievements — campaigns, masterpieces, spiritual or literal changes to humankind and the world. The measure, I’ve thought, is Sophie Scholl or Charles Darwin or Nelson Mandela.

Shelagh’s life offers another lens. She didn’t change the world forcibly, but she changed many people in it. She lightened them. She inspired them, though she likely didn’t realize it. She touched them in simple ways most of us don’t because we are too caught-up and lazy.

Her life reveals that it doesn’t take much to make a difference every day — just deep, full love —and that can be sewn with many different kinds of stitches..."

Kind World #6: An Ordinary, Beautiful Life

"Shelagh Gordon was another name in the obituaries, an ordinary woman who had died suddenly of a massive brain aneurysm at the age of 55. But something in her obituary stood out to a journalist at the Toronto Star. For weeks, Catherine Porter had been combing the paper, looking to profile an ordinary person through the perspectives of the family and friends he or she had left behind. What emerged was an extraordinary portrait.

Gordon’s story is told by her oldest sister, Heather Cullimore, her niece, Jessica Cullimore, her best friend, Andy Schulz, and by Porter for WBUR’s Kind World..."

If it makes you feel any better, it was just SUNDAY when I got my shower working again (from around Jan 1). While I was waiting for the parts for SIL to do the repairs, the bathroom sink backed up and he had to snake it. After working on the plumbing for the shower over the better part of Saturday and Sunday, he was visibly relieved to have solved the problem. Then, the toilet wouldn't stop running. Ugh! (obviously, it's all connected). Still, I couldn't believe it! But thankfully, yesterday he fixed that, too.

I have to say that he is my hero. He doesn't just do what he says he's going to do, he does it well, and he does it with a smile on his face. On top of that, he insists that it's no problem at all. I wish I could clone him. :)

And while there's a slight chance they're wrong, all the previous BIG snows here (in my lifetime, at least) come from those dreaded nor'easters. I'm already thanking the heavens for my "Snow Angels" who are very proactive about letting me know they'll come and shovel me out. Thank goodness for the wonderful folks willing to do such arduous work for complete strangers.

p.s. I hate living here, too. Where, oh where, is that tropical island we were going to buy?

Sanda Island has around 45 acres of arable farmland in the middle, while the rest of the island’s almost 400 acres extends across hilly meadows, on which sheep graze in an idyllic setting. Galloo Island
Upstate New York, USA

Self-sufficiency should be no problem here. Encompassing almost 2,000 acres, Galloo Island is an all-American private island paradise. Located smack bang in the middle of Lake Ontario, Galloo boasts fertile earth, a herd of wild deer and even its own electricity. That’s right - thanks to its network of solar systems and wind turbines, your dream of a self-sustainable life doesn’t need to stop at what’s on the menu!

I wouldn't want to live in the Upstate NY one tho'- too much snow :snowflake::snowflake:

And here are the islands for sale: (take your pick, but you might want to win a lottery first - mucho money needed :what: - although there are some under 1 million $ :sheesh:):

This island- going for $720,000:

"This Cay is set in one of the most beautiful areas of the Bahamas, the North Bight of Andros. Imagine a sea of turquoise waters as far as the eye can see. Views of small islands sprinkled on the horizon, faint lights of Mangrove Cay in the evening and a cool ocean breeze coupled with complete privacy provides the setting of this private island. It is surrounded by miles of bonefishing waters, and you can even fish off the island!

The island was developed with a cottage and in 1934 the owner at the time created pathways around the island that still exist today. There was also a landscaped area around the home but this is now overgrown...

The natural features of the island include 10 ft. elevations, three small beaches, traditional island vegetation and the remnants of an old stone dock. Water depths of about three ft. for many miles around are ideal for speed boat access.

This private cay is a "one-of-a-kind" island that is becoming harder and harder to find available for sale in the Bahamas."

We better start saving our pennies because we will need a lot of them to buy an island. :floorlaugh:

If its frozen pipe or even a clogged pipe then it could affect the toilets depending on how they hooked up the pipes.

I hope you can get the drain cleared.

If you are having trouble with pipes freezing then what you can do is buy this wire wrap stuff that wraps around the pipe and you plug it into an outlet and the coils of wire heat up around the pipe and keep your pipes from freezing.

It is not too expensive to buy those wraps. Below is a link. You wrap it around the pipe in the areas that you know give you trouble.

If you know you have a frozen pipe then I think you can even put it on the frozen pipe and you may have to wait a couple days and I think it will thaw the pipe.

You keep it plugged in all winter. You just need an outlet close by. You have to be careful where you plug it in because you don't want the plug to touch water so you may want an electrician to hook it up to a proper GFI outlet.

I ended up buying about 6 of these things to keep my pipes from freezing in another rent house I was staying at years ago.

You can get as many as you need. But do be careful with proper plug in because you don't want to have a fire from the plug in part. A good electrician should be able to hook them up fairly cheaply.

I prefer the plug in kind but they also make regular insulation wrap to wrap around pipes. It can work too to prevent pipe freezing but when it is really cold it may not be as good as the plug in kind.

Thanks for the info. We have those wire thingys- the ones you plug in- on our incoming water pipes, but not the waste pipes. I think I'll look into the other types of pipe wraps tho'.

Zuri dear, I know what you mean, but this could be taken two ways. One that the present dogs will go in with you ........? meaning Zuri and Chayton when they go, or the present ones meaning living dogs at that time when you go?

Of course somethings are funny to me these last few days. I'm getting tired of being in bed, but it's the best place in the house. My heated waterbed, large screen tv (dh and I have decided that were not getting glasses, just bigger tvs), my laptop and coloring books and perfect natural light to color in.
Shhhhhh, I had Anna pay for my new Faber Castel pencils, so dh wouldn't know the full price. I'm terrible aren't I. It will cost me in the long run - it's expensive to keep her mouth shut. I always sent her with dh because she'll spill her guts on everything he did. When we were on our fifteenth wedding anniversary down in San Antonio, one of my sisters babysat Anna and her brother, and Anna kept a list of infractions to present to me when we got back.

BBM :floorlaugh:

Anna sounds just like me younger sister. When she was little, she would tell everyone in the neighborhood our business. Couldn't shut her up.

We call her Nana (old lady/grandma). :giggle:

Prayers for your sister Niner

Hope everything turns out good for her.

:praying:

There is our final destination after the multi-state Garage Sale tour. :)

We pool all our money together and buy the island and then setup cottages for each one of us.

Then we setup a fishing tour business for income and have a few cottages for tourists where we overcharge them for everything. LOL
If we charge them enough then we should be able to self fund our costs to have food brought in by boat.

The only downside is the next hurricane with a bulls eye for that island. :)
