Prosecutor Breaks His Silence About Jodi Arias Case: 'She Thought She Was As Smart As Einstein' (with clip)

"...“Jodi Arias believed that if her I.Q. was measured it would be something like in the area of Albert Einstein. So, she probably thought that she could get away with it,” prosecutor Juan Martinez told INSIDE EDITION.

“What she did to Travis Alexander was absolutely horrific. The act of taking the knife and sticking it in his chest, and sliced his throat while he was still alive, that speaks to horrific overkill on her part.”...

She tried get under the prosecutor's skin during the trial, saying in a tweet that Martinez suffered from “little man syndrome."

Arias “apparently forgot that the case was going to be tried in a court. Not on social media,” Martinez said..."

"Five years after she was acquitted of the murder of her two-year-old daughter, Caylee, the so-called "most hated mom in America” has emerged from seclusion by starting her own photography business.

The 29-year-old is taking her new job seriously. She reportedly bought a Canon EOS camera, which retails for about $400....

INSIDE EDITION has obtained her company's registration papers. The company, Case Photography, LLC, has been registered in West Palm Beach. The paperwork also indicates that she paid $160 to establish Case Photography as a limited liability company. It has been operating since January 1..."

German shorthaired pointer named CJ wins Westminster dog show

"A German shorthaired pointer named CJ won "Best in Show" at the 140th Westminster Kennel Club dog show in New York on Tuesday, besting more than 2,700 contestants over the two-day competition...

"I couldn't believe it," CJ's owner Valerie Nunes-Atkinson, from Temecula, California, said about the win. CJ stood stoically by her side and was occasionally rewarded his favorite chicken treats...

CJ, who pranced across an expansive show floor at Madison Square Garden, will also receive a trophy and later embark on a media tour as the show's champion. A Borzoi, named Lucy, was runner-up..."

While 'Affluenza' Teen Went Free, Similar Case Led to Prison

"One 16-year-old drove drunk, ran a red light and crashed into a pregnant woman's car, killing her and her unborn child. Another drunken teenager rammed a pickup truck into a crowd of people assisting a stranded driver, killing four.

Jaime Arellano went to prison. Ethan Couch went free.

The stories of the two Texas teens illustrate how prosecutors' decisions in similar cases can lead to wildly different outcomes. The poor immigrant from Mexico has been behind bars for almost a decade. The white kid with rich parents got 10 years of probation...

In the juvenile system, intoxication manslaughter cases in Texas over the last decade were just as likely to result in probation as they are detention, according to figures from the Texas Juvenile Justice Department. Juvenile justice experts say the state's juvenile system places more weight on rehabilitation than the adult system, where punishments are tougher.

Since 2005, Texas has prosecuted 38 juveniles for intoxication manslaughter or intoxication assault. Only three were sent to the adult system, and half of all cases resulted in probation of some kind...

Once juveniles are in detention, it's more likely than not that they will go free when they turn 19. Only 33 percent of all juvenile offenders are sent to adult prison, according to a study of juvenile sentencing conducted by the University of North Texas professor Chad Trulson.

Trulson said a probation sentence for killing four people might seem "absurd" to the average person.

But in the juvenile system, he said, that type of sentence for intoxication manslaughter and potentially more serious offenses "is probably more typical than we would think.".."

Panel holds clemency hearing for Georgia death row inmate

"ATLANTA (AP) — Lawyers for a Georgia prisoner set to be executed this this week argue his life should be spared, writing Tuesday that their client has shown great remorse and was manipulated into killing a fellow Navy sailor.

Travis Hittson, 45, is set to receive an injection of the barbiturate pentobarbital at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Georgia’s state prison in Jackson. He was convicted in February 1993 of malice murder in the slaying of Conway Utterbeck when the two were Navy crewmen stationed in Pensacola, Florida.

“The community of men who served alongside both Mr. Hittson and Conway Utterbeck in the Navy believe that Travis Hittson is deserving of mercy, as do others, including jurors who were charged with determining Mr. Hittson’s punishment,” his lawyers wrote in a clemency application.

The State Board of Pardons and Paroles, the only entity in Georgia authorized to commute a death sentence, held a closed-door clemency hearing Tuesday. The board did not immediately release its decision..."

Trial Begins for Alleged 'Grim Sleeper' Serial Killer Lonnie Franklin Jr.

"The notorious "Grim Sleeper" trial began today in Los Angeles with a statement from L.A. County Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman, more than three decades after the discovery of the alleged serial killer’s first victim.

In her opening statement, Silverman said that the evidence in this case will tell a story of a serial killer who stalked streets of South Los Angeles, at a time when the neighborhood was marked by the lethal epidemic of crack cocaine.

Lonnie Franklin Jr. is accused of killing 10 women between 1985 and 2007, Silverman said. The women, all between the ages of 15 and 35, were strangled or shot and left in alleyways near Franklin's home in south L.A., The Associated Press said. Sexual contact was also usually involved, according to The AP.

The "Grim Sleeper" nickname came about because of an apparent 14-year gap in the murders between 1988 and 2002. Franklin, 63, was arrested in July 2010 after his DNA was connected to some crime scenes. He has pleaded not guilty to ten counts of murder and one count of attempted murder, The AP said...

The defense did not give an opening statement in court, but Franklin's defense attorney, Seymour Amster, told ABC News ahead of court today that there is more to the story than meets the eye...

Franklin's trial is expected to last up to four months, the DA's office told ABC News."

Graphic Photos Begin 'Grim Sleeper' Serial Killing Trial

"Their bodies were dumped in alleys and garbage bins in South Los Angeles, some naked, some covered with mattresses and trash. Most had been shot in the chest after some type of sexual contact, others strangled.

As prosecutor Beth Silverman showed photo after photo of the 10 victims to a packed courtroom on Tuesday, family members of the dead young women shook as they wept. Some covered their faces, others had to walk out.

It was an emotional beginning to the long-awaited "Grim Sleeper" trial more than 30 years after the first victim's death..."

20 Minutes to Death: Record of the Last Execution in France

"The following document is a written record of convicted killer Hamida Djandoubi's last moments before he was guillotined in a Marseilles prison on September 10, 1977.
This record -- dated September 9 -- was written by a judge appointed to witness the execution.

Djandoubi's execution was the last execution carried out in France before capital punishment was abolished in 1981.

Then-President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, who had voiced his "loathing for the death penalty" before he was elected to office, flatly turned down Djandoubi's appeal for clemency and chose to let "Justice run its course", as he did on two previous instances (Christian Ranucci, executed on July 28, 1976 and Jérôme Carrein, executed on June 23, 1977).

Hamida Djandoubi, a Tunisian national, was sentenced to death for killing his former lover, Elisabeth Bousquet.

He was executed in Marseilles' Baumettes prison in September 1977.

The following text was written on the night of the execution by judge (juge d'instruction) Monique Mabelly. Mabelly later entrusted the document to her son, who ultimately passed it on to Robert Badinter, the ex-Minister for Justice who successfully campaigned for the abolition of the death penalty in France.

Badinter eventually gave the document to the French newspaper Le Monde, which published it on October 9, 2013. The text below is a translation. The French original can be found here..."

Someone Wrote A Sketchy Guide For Evading New Rules On Prison Phone Costs

"WASHINGTON -- Someone has a clever plan -- outlined in a mysterious, unsigned document -- to help prisons and jails evade Obama administration regulations aimed at stopping prison phone companies from charging inmates and their families hundreds of dollars per month for basic calling services.

Major prison phone companies didn't comment or said they weren't involved in writing the document, obtained by an attorney who represents a group of inmates' families. But the attorney is concerned enough that he has asked regulators to take a look...

Last October, the Federal Communications Commission approved a plan to limit the price of prison phone calls to 11 cents a minute in state and federal prisons, cap certain types of fees and formally discourage commissions to prisons. The FCC, however, stopped short of banning them.

The anonymous document that recently came to light lays out a straightforward way to get around this FCC order: pretend that commissions don’t exist, charge prisoners and their families a whole new set of fees and call them something else..."

A College Education for Prisoners

"States are finally backing away from the draconian sentencing policies that swept the country at the end of the last century, driving up prison costs and sending too many people to jail for too long, often for nonviolent offenses. Many are now trying to turn around the prison juggernaut by steering drug addicts into treatment instead of jail and retooling parole systems that once sent people back to prison for technical violations.

But the most effective way to keep people out of prison once they leave is to give them jobs skills that make them marketable employees. That, in turn, means restarting prison education programs that were shuttered beginning in the 1990s, when federal and state legislators cut funding to show how tough they were on crime...

New Yorkers pay about $60,000 per inmate per year — a considerable burden given that 40 percent of those who are released return within three years, most for economically driven crimes. But inmates who attend privately financed college classes before release fare much better. A prison education program created by Bard College in 2001 boasts a remarkable recidivism rate of 4 percent for inmates who merely participated in the program and 2.5 percent for those who earned degrees in prison. In addition, research has shown that the public saves $4 to $5 in reimprisonment costs for every $1 it spends on prison education..."

Utah: The high cost of the death penalty: $1.6 million is just the tip of the iceberg

"...Utah has filed 110 Aggravated Murder cases in the last 11 years, but has achieved only one execution, and only one new death sentence in that time. These other death-eligible cases may not result in execution for several reasons: They may be resolved by plea bargain before trial, or the defendant may not be convicted of Aggravated Murder at trial, or the jury may vote for a sentence other than death. But, the extra expenses begin mounting as soon as counsel is appointed in each potential death penalty case.

For example, in 2015, Washington State found that the additional cost per case to the state for a death penalty case was $1 million. Then, adding in the estimated costs incurred in all the death-eligible cases that did not result in execution, and dividing that total amount by the 5 executions Washington had since 1976, resulted in a cost per execution of about $24 million. That is 24 times the additional costs of one capital case.

Similarly, a 2008 study in Maryland found that the additional cost per case for a case resulting in a death sentence was about $2 million more per case than when the death penalty was not sought. Then, adding in the estimated costs incurred in all of the death-eligible cases that did not result in execution, and dividing that total amount by the 5 executions Maryland had since 1976, resulted in a cost per execution of $37.2 million. That is 18.6 times the additional costs of one capital case..."

The Secret Search Engine Tearing Wikipedia Apart

"Over the weekend you may have heard news that the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that finances and founded Wikipedia, is interested in creating a search engine that appears squarely aimed at competing with Google. What you may not have heard is that this nascent project is tearing the Wikimedia Foundation and the Wikipedia community apart...

The concern from the Wikipedia community is that a Google-like search engine could represent a shift in the organization’s focus from human-led curation and editing of articles to one driven by automated data lookup..."

The Animals That Sniff Out Your Sickness
Rats can smell tuberculosis. Dogs can smell cancer. Now we’re training them to save your life.

"...Charles is an African giant pouched rat, a species endemic to sub-Saharan Africa. He’s also a pioneer, one of 30 of his species that live and work here in Morogoro, a few hundred kilometers west of Tanzania’s largest city, Dar es Salaam, on a program to sniff out tuberculosis (TB).

TB is a disease that can destroy the lungs. About 9 million new cases are diagnosed worldwide every year, one-quarter of them in Africa. Africa also has the highest TB death rate per head of population. Antibiotics can cure TB, but it’s fatal if untreated, and many patients are never diagnosed. This is partly because the 125-year-old microscope-based test used across Tanzania (and in many other cash-strapped countries) picks up only about 60 per cent of cases, a figure that drops as low as 20 per cent for people also infected with HIV.

This is where Charles the rat comes in. Charles and his rat colleagues sniff cough-and-spit samples provided by suspected TB patients. The rats aren’t infallible, but they do detect about 70 per cent of cases, and it doesn’t matter to them if a patient has HIV – which matters a great deal in Tanzania, where about four in every ten people with TB are HIV positive..."

You’re a great advisor, and people often come to you when they need advice. You’re wise, smart, helpful, and resourceful.

Y/N, hope your son is better son. Has he been taking any form of aspirin lately? My husband gets severe nosebleeds and had to stop taking daily baby aspirin as it thins his blood too much.

Loved the dog show video without the dogs. Either they are prancing off to a bathroom or carrying their cup of pee and hoping not to spill it. :hilarious:

Pages, you always make me smile! English tea party? It would be at a hotel where we could be serrrrvvvvvveeedddd dahling. The High Tea bridal shower for KCL was pretty darn perfect in my eyes. That was held at the Biltmore in Phoenix. The flowers were what made it IMO and of course the bride :)

ETA: Menu would include tea sandwiches and small confitures. Varieties of English tea served using good China. At the Biltmore, they had Herend china which I loved. I printed the invites on fancy invitations, but didn't include anything about hats. KCL wore a cute hat her grandmother had had. I only have a riding helmet, so no hat for me lol. The table was set beautifully there and if I had a tea at my home, I would try and copy what they did!

BBM Sounds lovely Zuri, but if I may ask, what the heck are confitures (they won't hurt us will they :scared:)

I was getting ready to clap when I heard German Shhh and then orthaired Spaniel. I had my GSDs all excited and barking too!

I didn't think the German Shepard would win- he couldn't compare to the GS who won in 1987, IMO. I remember how magnificent he was.

No- he hasn't been taking aspirins. I think his nose got dried out yesterday with the cold/dry weather and all and when he blew his nose in the car, he must have broken a blood vessel? He does take ADD meds which can elevate his blood pressure- maybe that's why there was so much blood flowing from his nose. I was able to stop the flow last night and this AM. If it happens again, he will go to see his MD. Thanks for the info. I would have never thought of meds affecting a nose bleed. :blowkiss:

BBM You are too funny :hilarious:

And I want to add: There shouldn't be a problem with posting our thoughts on JM's book on the SB. I haven't been on the new JM book thread because I
haven't received my book from Amazon yet and I would like to read the whole book myself first (I should be receiving it tomorrow).

Question for my side bar friends.

In situations where a friend has a family member that has committed suicide I have given them "the grief hand book" and the book "my son my son".

My good friend's son has just unsuccessfully tried to commit suicide with alcohol and pills. He has just come out of his coma today after 2 days. Does anyone have any supportive book book to recommend to give to them to read? they are avid readers.

He is 40 years old, lives 14 hours away from them, is depressed about a recent divorce and has two children.

Oh I am so sorry ATL. I hope he gets the help and support he needs. I am not current on books like you are, but will reach out within my friends to find out what they recommend.

:giggle: well, it's the truth, they did look like that without their dogs.

I agree about the book. I don't really want spoilers, but I do like other's opinions on how well it is written.

We had a mix of snow and rain this morning. 50 degrees by the weekend!

BBM Have a good cry Coffee :therethere:..and don't give up hope. There's always a chance that everything will be OK. Miracles can happen, my dear; I really believe that.

I know your life has been thrown into chaos - a roller coaster of anxiety and you have no choice but to live day-to-day right now. Try to stay present -- don't get ahead of yourself and overthink ( as I think you will get emotionally exhausted). Try to maintain a sense of balance and focus only on the moment in hand.

I know you are angry about what has happened to your son (and at your son). I think you should try to accept what has happened to him and just go on from there. You are stressed about your thoughts and feelings and I'm sure they have changed at different stages of your son's situation . You have experienced many intense emotions all within a relatively short time span. It's been a hard month for you and your family. :(

I am so sorry this is happening to you and your family. I cannot assume how you feel or what you are going thru; all I can say is, you are all in my prayers. I don't know what is going to happen to your son or if everything is going to be OK, but I think of you and your son and the vulnerability of the whole situation often throughout my day ; I can only hope for the best for him.

Remember Coffee- Thy will be done :blowkiss:

Glasgow Coma Scale

"The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a neurological scale which aims to give a reliable and objective way of recording the conscious state of a person for initial as well as subsequent assessment. A patient is assessed against the criteria of the scale, and the resulting points give a patient score between 3 (indicating deep unconsciousness) and either 14 (original scale) or 15 (the more widely used modified or revised scale)..."

Just remember coffeej that we all love you here at the SB, and miss your daily posts. I was hoping this year would be a better one for you!
PLEASE take some time for yourself, I'm worried about all the stress and fatigue you are enduring. It will weaken your immune system and I don't want to see you back in the hospital again.
Thinking of you  and sending positive healing prayers for your son.

You mentioned a "Memorial service" was held. I would start there at whatever place arranged the Memorial Service because typically the cremains would be present at the Memorial Service. Whatever place arranged the Memorial Service may be able to get a copy of the death certificate or at least point you in the right direction to find out how to get it and they should be able to tell you whether or not he was cremated already at the time they did the memorial service and maybe able to tell you where his cremains went.

In our case the cremains were handed over to a relative in an urn right after the memorial service.

The thing is - the GF arranged the Memorial service - it was at his "old" church in Lake Elizabeth. So, no, no urn with the cremains... It wasn't "official" - with a funeral director and such...

Niner, forgive me but I do not remember where your brother was living when he died. Do not give her any more money. If the cremation was not paid and you want to do that, pay the proper place. Contact the county or state vital records office and get a CERTIFIED copy with an official stamp. I think it cost me about $15 each to get my parents.

He died in Los Angeles County - and NO we will NOT be giving her anymore money!! I called UCLA Medical in Westwood where he died, but had to leave a message - they'll get back to me in one business day. Than I called the L.A. Coroner's office, but they had no record of him getting an autopsy - she said maybe the doctor at UCLA did that - so will wait until UCLA calls me back and I will ask. Also, went on line to get his death certificate ($21) - BUT - I have to go in person to get that - so that might mean I'll have to drive all the way down to L.A. to get it. I have to show them I am related to him! Don't know "how" I can do that, since I have my married name now - bring my marriage license?? :waitasec:

It seems to me the GF is trying to scam your family. I wouldn't pay her a dime, but I would take measures to find out what actually happened to your brother, including cause of death. Armed with that knowledge, you can comfortably sever all ties with her.

So sorry that your family is still having to endure this woman's influence on your lives. It also makes me feel even worse about your brother. He deserved better than a woman like that...

Yes, we think so too!! And yes, when UCLA calls me back - I want to find the doctor and have a list of questions for him re my brother's death. We all said, he deserved a better GF... but you know, love conquers all!

Is anyone else watching the Westminster Dog Show? Vegas has odds of 4:1 the German Shepherd will win. They are all such beautiful dogs! This is very similar to Hunter Breeding Shows for horses. I just figured this out lol.

Yes! I watched - I sure wanted the German Shepherd to win... :(

I'm following the "Affluenza" Teen case here... :gaah: He has a court date of Feb. 19th.

Regarding the "Grim Sleeper" case - don't know if this link will be okay, but will post anyway - Sprocket is at the courthouse!! Link:

You’re a great advisor, and people often come to you when they need advice. You’re wise, smart, helpful, and resourceful.

Okay - off to take the Huz for his 3-month chemo shot! LOTS of problems with his "new" insurance - Covered California - Anthem Blue Cross - so we are trying to change it to Blue Shield, which ALL his doctors plus our local hospital takes!! :gaah:

Niner, if you are closer to a notary you can still request the death certificate by mail. You would need to download
the form "Certificate of Identity" and have it notarized --- which means they believe you to be the person you say you are, the sister. Send that with your check and application. Sometimes a bank will have a notary, and may not charge a notary fee if you have an account there.

the forms are here, under "by Mail" column: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/dca/dcadeath.htm
