That makes sense. I think the far more likely scenario is that he wandered off.

ETA: I hate that river being there...

I'm a bit puzzled... if he was at the address stated (20738), the front yard would have been quite a ways back from the road, with an entire residence and it's yard (20736) between him and the road. Appears to be all one piece of property.

AND there's a fence/gate and foliage between 20736 and the highway. It sort of appears that the entire front property (and possibly both) are fenced.

I don't like the river right there, either... but unless it's unfenced, or there's an ungated path down to the river through those trees, I can't imagine a 2yo managing to get to it. And any of those options are quite a ways for a toddler.

I mean, granted, the fencing is 3-strand barbed wire... but most 2yos still aren't going to mess with it. Curious is he's just turned two or if he's closer to three... gonna make a big difference in how far he could get.

So, was the gate open? Where'd the info about the vehicle come from? Are there custody issues at play?

Following.
Guessing he must have wandered away.
Was he outside with an adult and they became distracted for a while ?
It only takes a moment.
Wondering if they looked for him by themselves for 10-15 min. or so.
Didn't read it yet at the links, but have they utilized sar dogs ?

Hope he's found soon, two years old is so vulnerable. :(
Imo.

Overview of Area With HWY 229.

Not sure if we should be more concerned about the proximity of the river or the gold station wagon. Personally I'm more concerned about a potential abduction at this point. Hwy 229 provides a quick exit out of the area.
ETA - I see the SO has excluded the car as a factor.

Hopefully the LCSO offers an update soon on what direction their investigation is focused on.

A car of interest was described earlier in the search process, but a Lincoln County spokesperson updated the public on March 2, around 4:40 p.m., that the car is no longer of interest to the case. During the same press conference, the spokesperson elaborated their decision not to push out an Amber Alert, saying they didn't believe criminal actions were involved, and the case did not meet the criteria for an alert.

From the pictures, it looks like their are focused on the Siletz river.

Temps at night there can get down to the upper 30's, so hypothermia is a danger for a toddler.
It doesn't have to be snowy for freezing to occur with small children or elderly.
I keep checking back here hoping for good news.
So sorry for his worried family.
Imo.

Based on the timelines known so far, I think all your thoughts are correct. You look away for a short time and little ones like Dane are gone. How horrible for his Mom & Dad, heartbreaking situation.

On Saturday March 1, 2025, at about 4:25pm, the Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a missing 2-year-old male (Dane Paulsen) from his residence near Milepost 21 on HWY 229, north of Siletz, Oregon. A vehicle and an adult male, both of which were not known to the family, were noted near a bridge close to the residence approximately 30 minutes prior to the juvenile’s disappearance. Through a community tip, this vehicle and operator have since been located. Following further investigation, this subject and the vehicle are no longer a point of interest. We thank our community for sharing information and tips related to this investigation.
At the time of Dane’s disappearance, he was playing in the front yard of their residence and out of sight of his parents. Dane is friendly and fearless, and is comfortable around strangers and water, but cannot swim. Dane is known to love water and vehicles.

At this time, Dane is still missing. Investigators are following up on numerous leads, including investigating various leads provided by our community. We have multiple Search and Rescue Teams and Sheriff’s Posse, along with community volunteers, searching the area. Marine Teams and divers are searching the river. The Lincoln County Major Crime Team and the FBI are also assisting with investigative leads.
At this time, Dane’s disappearance does not meet the criteria to use the Amber Alert system. Our team will continue to share updates and information via FlashAlert and social media. There is no evidence at this time to suggest criminal actions are involved in this incident.
