Snow day reaction goes viral

I would be pleased if a thoughtful, open-minded student called me to discuss snow-day policies with me. The fact that he left his name and phone number shows that he really intended to engage in dialogue about this. Reaming this kid out for calling amounts to rewarding the apathetic kids who don't give a ish. Sometimes I swaer older people just want to turn out robots who don't think for themselves or care about our society.

I had teachers and administrators like you, absinthe. I could have made such a call and gotten a call back. A polite one.

Also - I think anyone of any age has the right to question authority. And inf act - everyone does - from about the age two on (until they become robots;) ).

We just returned from having dinner with some friends of ours. The wife just happens to be a high level administrator for one of the largest school districts in the chicago suburbs. I ask her if she had heard about this story and what her take on the situation was. Her response was basically this:

1. She is a public servant, her paycheck is funded by the tax payers and she feels that she has a duty to uphold a certain standard, this standard she feels extends to her husband and her children.

2. she has had students call her home with questions before. She said she handled it by contacting the PARENTS and calmly explaining that it is more appropriate for the student to call the office. But she handles the situation not her husband.

3. If her husband had ever used the mis-judgement that this woman did, she would have already handed in her resignation. Not to mention she would have her husband making a public apology.

Thanks for that opinion from someone who lives in that world.

I read that the kid wants this whole thing to blow over; he agrees that there are more important newsworthy events out there to discuss.

And, ironically, he's sick of the media phone calls he keeps getting in his own home. Maybe now he knows what it feels like to be called at home like this. School systems have ways of telling large groups of people if school is canceled or not. Can you imagine if some people ignored that and called the home of the administrators? They'd get hundreds of phone calls asking about information that is easily accessible elsewhere. Maybe the administrator's wife had gotten other phone calls; maybe she was sick of her phone ringing off the hook and took it out on the kid.
