Some of Sweden's crown jewels have been stolen from a cathedral.

Police are chasing the thieves in motorboats after the 'priceless' items were taken from Strängnäs Cathedral in southeastern Sweden this afternoon.

Two royal crowns - one belonging to King Karl IX, the other to Queen Kristina - were taken, as well as a royal orb.

Thomas Agnevik, a spokesman for the police, said: 'It's 1-0 to them right now.'

I'd pay good money to see cops in watercraft chasing professional jewel thieves!

It’s a pity Sweden didn’t have replicas made and displayed them instead that would have taught the robbers a lesson. I don’t condone crime but I sure would have loved to see the robbers being chased for real for once. The jewels will be melted down real quick they are not the kind of thing you can take to a pawnbrokers.

The two crowns and the stolen apple are NOT part of the Swedish Crown Jewels, they are funeral regalia, made to be placed on the tombs of royals persons, in this case made for King Karl IX of Sweden (died 1611) and his wife Queen Kristina (née princess of Holstein-Gottorp) (died 1625), so the items were in the place they had been made for.

The stolen items were found on 5 February 2019 in a trash bin, in bad shape, and had to be restored. The thief (definitively not a professional, just lucky for a while) was arrested and sentenced for grand theft to 4 years and 6 months in prison. The funeral regalia is again on display in the Strängnäs Cathedral since June 2020 (hopefully better protected this time).

A little OT, but have the English Crown Jewels ever been stolen? When my DH and I were in London in the 90s, we got to see the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London. It was actually a little scary, because the guards were armed to the teeth.
