Paragraph 2: "we never drove directly to Somerset West. Drove around CPT...drove to SW...my wife, Anni requested to see Africa"

after paragraph 2, Dewani had nothing to change, until paragraph 5

in it, Dewani changes his version to he did not see 2 firearms, cannot testify as to how Zola got out of the car, tried to bargain with one of the men, wife told me she was hiding wedding rings

PH: in para 7, Anni gave me her wedding rings, gave them to the male & said it's the last thing we have, I was a bit confused because the accused told me specifically where to find the ring, after he said (in stm) that he gave the rings to the attackers. I then asked the accused about that. He became uneasy with the question & paced up & down

I proceeded to show him the exhibits

So it seems all Dewani's statement changes were during the time in the car:

He didn't see guns
Didn't know how Zola left car
Anni didn't hide rings, gave them to him instead and he gave them to hijackers

But then, how did one end up hidden in seat?

He slipped up! Dewani got caught out in a very, very important lie there, I think. There is absolutely no good reason an innocent man would lie about the events of a hijacking, is there?

Dewani only made changes to two paragraphs. There was nothing else in the statement Stefanus took, that he wanted to change

Dewani's interview with Hendrickse lasted from 20:20 until 21:16

proceedings adjourn for tea for 15 mins

#DewaniTrial Cpt Hendrikse says he referred Dewani to paragraph 5. He said he gave the hijackers a wedding ring worth 20.000 pounds.

  • #827
Dewani had the opportunity to bring up the money, he chose not to.

IMO, the ring was the most important to Dewani.

can't remember what Anni gave him, he assumed it was the wedding rings #DewaniTrial @ANN7tv

I agree Z. I can see why they suspected him. If only they kept him longer and wired up Tongo. Missed opportunity, it would have cleared Dewani or condemned him. jmo

In SD's statement 3.10.14 - he says Anni told him she was hiding the rings between the car seats.

After ZT was let out of the car, they sped along bumpy road. Hi'jacker said they were to be let out separately. SD then begs "no". He then asked A for rings and offered one to the hi-jacker. Then both men shouting at him to get out of the car.

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/interactive/2014/oct/06/dewani-trial-plea-statement-pdf

So it sounds like he had made 2 previous statements before leaving SA, and we don't know whether this recent one has further changes.

Wait. They didn't have primary residue test results during the first trial? WTH?

Ikr? How did they get away with it? Their tests and investigations skills are seriously lacking, unfortunately.

It seems like Dewani didn't mention in his first statement that it was Anni who wanted to see the township?

  • #833
So it sounds like to me that - annoyingly for Dewani - brave Anni hid her ring in the car. Dewani could hardly stop his 'kidnappers' halfway through throwing him out of the car and say, 'Hang on, wife's hidden an expensive ring in there that I want back'.

That could have resulted in the kidnappers claiming the ring for themselves and.....Anni suddenly becoming aware this was a set-up. Dewani would have had to face the knowledge and accusation in his new wife's eyes, as she was driven to her death.

But, thrifty as he is, he couldn't bear to let that ring go, so compromised his own statement in order to get it back.

That's what I think. Hope it's his downfall.

Proceedings resume

AMopp: In this court, Mr. Dewani has entered a plea explanation. In it, he says he asked Tongo to arrange a helicopter trip as a surprise for his wife. Tongo took the accused & his wife, he took R10k in cash and placed it in her handbag, etc

The explanation was also not given to the family. I am referring to the transcript of the meeting with the family (Sneha's)

He explained to the family that he had no contact with Tongo subsequent to the incident & the first contact he had with Tongo, was the Saturday. He didn't disclose to the family that he had a meeting with Tongo in the vehicle/sms & telephone conversation, nor the trip to exchange money, etc.

PH: That's correct

AM: All this is contained in a transcript of a meeting which Mrs. Sneha Mashru had recorded, that you got from the UK Metro police, nor in a transcript of Mr. Nick Parker's interview.

PH: That's correct

AM: Are you able to comment?

PH: Had that explanation been given to me right from the start, Mr. Tongo would've become a suspect right from the beginning and it would've provided a motive.

Traverso: Why would Mr. Tongo have been the suspect

PH: It would've provided a motive for Tongo to extort money.

Traverso: Because he knew Mr. Dewani had money?

PH: Correct. As far as I can see, as far as the investigation goes, this version of Mr. Dewani is newly fabricated

PH: To me that is evidence that would've been vital to supply to the Investigating Officer, that Mr. Tongo knew there was money That he was arranging this helicopter trip.

In the version of Mr. Qwabe, it was first alleged that Mr. Dewani was involved

In a tiny way, I'm relieved. I've always wondered if Anni might have known how she'd been betrayed, but now I don't think she did. Bad enough that her husband left the car without fighting for her, but having the knowledge he was part of her terror would have been so much worse.

Whoops. Nobody told me we were back!

#DewaniTrial Cpt Hendrikse says had Dewani told him about the money and helicopter ride, Tongo would have been an immediate suspect.

((Touching on "Beano" Bernard Mitchell's allegations that Tongo admitted Dewani was framed)

PH: That was never brought to my attention. I learnt of that when it was brought to the attention of the court.

#DewaniTrial Cpt Hendrikse says having so much money and the taxi driver knowing about it, is inviting trouble.
