MM:I saw myself being involved (in this crime).

VZ: and how were you going to be involved (this was Friday night)?

vanessa poonah ‏@vanessapoonah01 #SABCNews 56s56 seconds ago

judge: did you see any future role in this crime.

MM: I saw myself being involved, yes.

van Zyl: and how did you see yourself involved?

MM: we never spoke about how I was going to be involved.

EWN Reporter ‏@ewnreporter 2m2 minutes ago

VZ:but what role were you going to play.

Judge asks him for an answer.

MM: I didn't know.

Thanks for that. They are low, but even if MM was only earning R3,000 per month, just a third of his monthly salary, for taking a life?? It's so hard for me to get my head around. Glad I can't, really....

Have a look at salaries for police officers. Here in the UK, a police officer can live a reasonable life. There in SA, police officers barely get by and are just as open to going 'under the wire' as anyone else..... and they too often do. There are great police officers there that risk their lives daily but the general air of corruption there affects everyone.

van Zyl: you didn't even know on the Friday the telephones would be useful at all.

MM: its something I did on my own.

MM: I would say no.

EWN Reporter ‏@ewnreporter 3m3 minutes ago

VZ: I'm saying Fri evening, you did not know whether phones would be used? MM: my work place phone? any?

MM:did not know.

VZ: so what role were you going to play in this killing that would possibly take place?

MM:use hotel phones to contact them.

VZ: on Friday did Qwabe agree to do the killing?

MM: he indicated like someone who agreed.

VZ: was he still thinking about it. I'm asking you whether he said yes I will do it, he agreed.

MM: he agreed.

Mbolombo's evidence in chief contradicted much of what Tongo told the #DewaniTrial earlier. That's been seized upon by the Defence today.

A couple of articles on crime in the Cape Town areas.

Serious crimes were mainly experience in low-income areas and townships. The highest violence and property crime rate is experienced in Mitchell's Plain, where gang-violence is claiming many lives. Further, areas such as Khayelitsha, Gugulethu or Nyanga remain the most dangerous according to murder statistics of the last years.
http://www.expatcapetown.com/crime-in-south-africa.html

Research shows that most victims are killed by acquaintances, friends or family members during disputes overwhelmingly fuelled by alcohol and in some occasions, drug abuse. Victimisation surveys, police docket surveys and mortuary surveillance studies reveal that the most victims of murder in South Africa are young black men. And studies reveal that most murdered women are killed by their intimate partners. And that men are six times more likely to be killed than women. - See more at: http://africacheck.org/2013/09/19/where-murder-happens-in-sa/#sthash.HHncgLJM.dpuf

MM: We never spoke about how I was going to be involved at the time. We never spoke about which role I was going to play.
1157
MM: I would use the hotel phone to make calls to co-conspirators. That was my role.

FvZ: As I understood your evidence yesterday, ZT wasn't sure if MQ would do it. Are you saying MQ was sure?

MM says he agreed.

Just a thought - could Dewani have had Anni somehow put on the 'books' or board of one of his businesses when the wedding took place, making her, indeed, a business associate?

Could very well be true, good point.

seems to be very slow feed today....
perhaps there will be early adjournment it is Friday

Pat, if you are in the UK, did you see the Reggie Yates docs on BBC3? the one on knife crime especially sums it all up.

I have been to many countries in Africa, including very poor ones like the ones now ravaged by ebola. But when I went to South Africa and explored all areas, including the townships I was shocked. Apart from a bigger proportion of middle class black south africans, little has changed for millions of people despite 20 years since aparteid was dismantled.

FvZ is reading from MM's statement: "My role was that this 'thing' happens". He reads further that MM said he was to make sure things go according to plan.
1213
FvZ: Did you know when the killing was to take place?
MM: I knew because ZT told me on the Saturday afternoon.
1215
MM says he made a mistake. Says it was MQ who told him when it would take place.
MM: I asked if it was necessary for it to take place that day. MQ said it had to.
FvZ raises his voice as he appears to get irritated with the witness.
1217
FvZ asks what else was discussed on the Saturday morning.

MM frowns and says he can't remember,

Judge asks if MM was told where hit would happen. He says no.

VZ again refers to Mbolombo's evidence in the Mngeni trial (exhibit x).

vanessa poonah ‏@vanessapoonah01 #SABCNews 8m8 minutes ago

van Zyl: what did you tell Abongile about Zola?

MM: that he was my friend, he can trust him. It was after Zola left.

van Zyl: you already told him that in the first call. Why necessary to make a second call to explain the same thing.

judge: did you want to make sure he would do this to get your money?

MM: that's correct.

EWN Reporter ‏@ewnreporter 5m5 minutes ago

VZ now reads from the court record, Mbolombo's testimony yesterday..."I would say the main role on my part is that Zola..and Abongile meet and this thing happens and make sure things go according to how they were planned"

VZ then asks: what do you mean make sure things go according to how they were planned? did you know when the killing was supposed to take place?

MM:I knew because Zola told me,whilst in the car (Sat afternoon)

VZ: where you involved in any meeting where this hit was planned?

MM: I was supposed to on the Sat, but Zola arrived late.

MM: I made a mistake Abongile is the one who told me.

VZ: when?

MM: convo we had that Saturday morning.

VZ: what did he tell you what is going to happen?

MM: I don't remember exactly.

MM says Abongile told him at 10am on Saturday when the hit would happen.

Just a quick point (re the map above), it isn't unusual for tourists to go all the way to Somerset West/Strand or somewhere along False Bay from Cape Town for dinner. We did it twice in a week. There are some lovely restaurants along there and we were recommended 2 by friends living in Cape Town, who took us. We went to one near Somerset West and one at the other end of the bay in Simons Town.

ETA at night.

No I didn't see it, I'll look and see if it's on i-player. I've never been to SA, only spoken to friends/family who have, and they loved it as holiday makers. One friend from SA (mum and dad doctors) went back and said the same as you about the townships. I can remember in the 80's my work union promoting the ANC with great hopes for the country. So much for that.
