Desai: " I intend to uphold that confidence." - That the public has in the courts

Desai: " let's be careful what we say or do in this trial out of respect for the family of the deceased, incl the accused."

Pieter Botha for #VanBreda tells court:

"My client is chomping at the bit to tell his version". A postponement has however been requested.

There's still evidence to be collected and witnesses to be interviewed. This trial was never going to start today, the whole kerfuffle about the media is a ruse. JMO

No wonder Henri was relaxed and smiling.

Botha: If there is one person willing to have his say, its my client #VanBreda

Phfft. I'm not counting on it.

The DNA evidence will be interesting because he can easily say he picked up the hammer for ... pick any reason you can think of.

Yep, he'll turn into the handy man of the family.

This is Henri’s emergency call. Minutes are spent while a woman dithers around trying to get his address … and this an emergency with potentially fatal consequences for Marli as each minute ticks by. He’s cool, calm and collected. Absolutely unbelievable.

All the comments I'm reading, there is not one who believes HvB is innocent. He's out on bail, essentially a free man! He's accused and the only suspect in the brutal murder of his family!! If this trial is continuously delayed, dockets go missing again, crumby experts and so forth, I'm convinced there's something untoward at work in SA! People everywhere are dumbfounded by this all! JMO I feel quite sad.

The handling of the call is appalling!! I want to tear my hair out!! While I listened, I googled the address as he spoke, 10 Allemann St, Stellenbosch, found the map and it's in the golf estate!! What the hell is wrong with those ladies?!!
HvB is a cool as a cucumber while his sister lay dying, there is no urgency in his voice!! It's all so upsetting.

Money is always a good motive for murder, but of course there are many others. Seriously huge money is involved here.

“Henri van Breda, 21, stands to inherit a share of £13 million ($A21m) from the brutal killing of his parents, along with his sister Marli, who was left fighting for her life in the frenzied attack at their luxury family home in Cape Town, two years ago”.

I am so upset about this case. I touch my iPad screen gently as if it were Marli's soul.

Why on earth was the DNA evidence just received on 3/17? They've had TWO YEARS to request, discover, dig up, and document all evidence. All of it. Everytime I hear an attorney say they need more time, I want to know what they have been doing?? I can accomplish all sorts of things in two years. I'm also a little disturbed that the defence has their hair on fire to get started. They are either overly confident or have some kind of nasty little surprise up their sleeve.

:grouphug: I feel the same possum. Those of us who'll follow this trial best be prepared for the worst.

Well said and for sure, something diabolical is coming to shock the foundations of SA and those overseas following. I hope I'm wrong and the state have got their act together come April.

HvB will have to wait another month before he pleads to the criminal charges facing him.

The trial was meant to get underway last Monday but the case hit a double snag as his defence team says it’s waiting for DNA reports and photos in a high resolution format.

The defence also vehemently opposed Judge Desai’s ruling the trial may be broadcast live.

Defence Advocate Pieter Botha reiterated the State is co-operating fully with his team but DNA reports and photos are not forthcoming from the police.

Botha told Desai he is willing to go all the way to the Constitutional Court to prevent the media from live streaming the court proceedings.

The media’s request will most likely be heard in the Supreme Court of Appeal early next month.

Looks like it’s going to be another OP saga all over again, only worse, and in reverse.

According to court papers, a furious family row was heard at their double-storey home in the hours leading up to the savage attack.

In later interviews with detectives, Henri claimed that an axe-wielding stranger had breached the estate’s state-of-the-art security to set upon his loved ones in their beds while he was in the bathroom.

He described watching as the lone assailant mercilessly killed his family one by one before hurling the murder weapon at his own head, knocking him out cold.

The latest charge mirrors reports that HvB had a history of using drugs which had put him in conflict with his parents. A teenager living in a shack near the family’s luxury home told South Africa’s Sunday Times newspaper how he had been paid as a “drug runner” by HvB who was addicted to crystal meth.

Another newspaper report suggested HvB had spent time in rehab in recent years and had had his allowance cut by his concerned parents in the weeks leading up to their murder.

The home where the massacre took place was recently and quietly sold off for $500,000, little more than half of the going rate for such a coveted address.

Meanwhile, a seven-bedroom mansion on the Sunshine Coast (in Oz) that Mr and Mrs Van Breda had planned to return to after a limited spell in Cape Town, is now also on the market for $2.5 million.

So while three family members were massacred and a fourth just managed to survive, HvB stayed in his bathroom. He then watched them being slaughtered one by one! It’s not as though “the assailant” was using a gun. It takes time to wield a weapon like an axe. Why not scream bloody murder ... literally ..., run downstairs and outside, grab something, anything, but try and save someone. No, he watched.
