South Korea -- Plane carrying 181 crashes off runs off runway, 179 dead. 29 Dec 2024

At least 47 people have died in a plane crash in South Korea, a local fire department official told CNN. That number is expected to grow.

• The Jeju Air jetliner, listed as a Boeing 737-800 on FlightAware, was carrying 175 passengers and six crew when it crash-landed at the airport in Muan county just after 9 a.m. local time on Sunday. The plane had traveled from Bangkok, Thailand.

• Rescue workers are focusing on reaching people inside the tail section of the plane. A fire department official told CNN the plane had been “almost completely destroyed” by fire.

• The fire department said the accident was caused by a landing gear malfunction.

Fire authorities say that among the 181 people aboard the Jeju Air flight from Bangkok, all but two are presumed dead after the aircraft crashed during an emergency landing at Muan International Airport in South Korea on Sunday morning, according to Yonhap News....

The Boeing 737-800 attempted a belly landing at around 9:03am local time after its landing gear reportedly failed to deploy.

Witnesses reported hearing loud “bang” noises before the aircraft struck the airport’s perimeter wall, breaking into two pieces and bursting into flames. Local broadcaster MBC aired footage that appears to show a bird strike incident as the plane was descending. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

If the death toll is confirmed, this would be South Korea’s worst domestic civil aviation disaster and marks the first major casualty incident involving a low-cost carrier in the country’s history, reports the JoongAng Ilbo.

The difference in culture is interesting here... translated apology from Jeju Air Chief Executive:

Above all, we express our deepest condolences and apologies to the families of the passengers who lost their lives in this accident. At present, the cause of the accident is difficult to determine, and we must await the official investigation results from the relevant government agencies.

Regardless of the cause, as CEO, I feel profound responsibility for this incident. Jeju Air will do everything possible to promptly manage this accident and support the families of those aboard. We will also do our utmost to determine the cause of the accident in cooperation with the government.

Once again, we pray for those who lost their lives in this accident and offer our deepest apologies to their bereaved families.

I have read pilots’ opinions yesterday evening. Still unclear what has happened. Does anyone think that recovering black boxes is even realistic given the level of fire?
Horrendous situation.

The two survivors are crew members, rescued from the tail section. Probably strapped in the crew members seats at the very back near the restrooms. JMO

Two crew members were the only survivors after the plane, which was carrying 181 people, landed on its belly, skidded off a runway and burst into flames, officials said.

The aircraft skidded down a runway at Muan International Airport on its belly before bursting into flames. The two survivors — both crew members, one male and one female — were rescued from the plane’s tail section, the only part of the aircraft that retained some of its shape, emergency services said. The ages of those on board ranged from 3 to 78.

This same plane squawked 7700 (emergency) on a flight yesterday.

The 7700 squawk was due to a medical emergency. The above may need to be translated.

"A Jeju Air passenger plane made an emergency landing at a nearby airport after a patient was found to be in critical condition during the flight."

"According to our investigation on the 28th, Jeju Air passenger plane (HL8088, 7C8135) departed Jeju International Airport at 11:51 AM the previous day and was heading to Beijing Daxing International Airport when it made an emergency landing at Incheon International Airport."

We’re now hearing from a survivor - one of only two people who made it out alive from the plane crash.

The 33-year-old flight attendant from the Jeju Air plane told doctors he had already been rescued when he woke up, according to news agency Yonhap, which quoted hospital director Ju Woong.

The charred tail of a large airplane lies on the ground surrounded by wreckage and rescue workers.

By Sunday evening, only 65 of the dead could be identified through their fingerprints and other means, officials said. A dozen bodies were so badly damaged that officials could not immediately identify their gender. Those who were identified included a 23-year-old flight attendant and a 78-year-old male passenger.

Jang Gu-ho, 68, sat stoically in the arrivals hall next to his teary-eyed wife after rushing from his home in the nearby city of Mokpo. He said five of his relatives had been on the plane returning from a vacation: his wife’s sister, her daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren.

“We’re thunderstruck,” he said.

In a closed area of the airport, officials were working to identify the bodies they recovered from the crash site. When officials posted on the walls of the arrivals hall the names of those confirmed dead, people rushed to check the lists.

Both black boxes have been recovered, one damaged

“According to Yonhap, the flight data recorder is partially affected, but the voice recorder appears to be intact.”

JMO: It will be a long investigation. Probably a multi-factorial, but a horrible, catastrophe. RIP all who perished. The two survivors are not in a great shape; one can talk. Wishing them full recovery.

An aviation expert speaks in this Sky News segment. He states that the belly landing was perfectly executed, but what caused this devastating crash was the solid structure at the end of the runway. Normally there is a run off area at the end of a runway to mitigate any issues with speed.
So tragic.

[..]

'This damage may have caused a hydraulic system failure, which could explain the inability to deploy the landing gear.'

He said the tight timeline between the bird strike warning and the pilot declaring Mayday meant it 'likely constrained the crew's ability to troubleshoot effectively and assess all options, including possible diversion to an alternate airport with a longer runway'.

'The inability to deploy the landing gear forced the crew to attempt a belly landing on Muan's 2,800-metre runway,' he said.
