Im hearing reports on TV of shots fired so i think some action is still taking place. Trying to confirm the reports now.

New Incident:

- vehicle with individuals inside refused to stop at police checkpoint/inspection

- rammed police officer & fired shots, then escaped

Reports of arrest and identification of suspect

Local media is reporting that one person has been arrested in relation to the attack.

Separate reports said the Guardia Civil have identified the suspect thought to have hired the white Fiat van used in the attack. According to those reports, he is understood to be from north Africa but to possess an NIE, the identity document issued to foreigners who are resident in Spain.

It is not clear whether the reports referred to the same person.

What we know as of now:

Thirteen people are dead and dozens have been injured

The Mossos already qualify what happened as a "terrorist attack"

The authorities request people not to get close to the city center: Plaza Catalunya and Las Ramblas

Police is still looking for a second rented van, in the first they found a Spanish passport of a person with Arab surnames

The subway and railroad stops of the affected area are closed

We do expect confusion in the early reports but how could something like the alleged hostages in a bar be so wrong?

We probably need to be patient and let some of the reports get hashed out a little bit.

Its hard to follow breaking news these days because of all the different news agencies trying to be the first ones to get the story.

It is good that we get news fast but we have a ways to go with the accuracy of the early reports.

Stampedes may have led to many individuals running into nearest restaurant/bar etc and then PERHAPS barricaded the door, etc

May have contributed to false reports

My strongest condemnation of the terrorist attack in Barcelona. We can confirm 13 deaths and over 50 wounded.

One of my adult children's friends was on Las Ramblas when this occurred

She said she was caught in 2 stampedes

She is holed up in a pharmacy with others, but is ok

Too close to home when we know people personally connected to these disgusting attacks. Hope the friend stays where she is and will be safe, physically. Emotionally, this is going to be hard for her, I imagine.

We know that the police work on several lines of investigation to find out who is behind the attack
The Police is working on the likelihood that this is a network with several involved.

Or just an unhinged mentally ill person-- an injustice collector ?
