Special needs child "voted" out of classroom

Perhaps no action has been taken against the teacher because the school can't prove that it happened? There were 15 other kids in that class. Don't you think that they have been interviewed a bit and asked if the situation really happened? I would think if all the kids were saying the same thing, then surely they would be taking some sort of action. It seems to me that at this point, the little boy and his mom are the only ones saying that this actually happened...

He was shaken up," she said. Barton said the nurse told her to talk with the child's teacher, who told her what happened.

you really can vote her out of her class:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/Fire-teacher-for-unprofessional-conduct

i signed it, that's for sure !!!!!!

Good. Let's also make sure we tell her what we don't like about who she is and what she does. :furious:

What the eff.

From the article:
It is further alleged that as Alex stood in the center of the class, his teacher asked each child to point out something he is or does that they do not like about him and vote if he is worthy enough to stay in the class.

"[Port St. Lucie spokeswoman Michelle] Steele said the teacher confirmed the incident did occur." This is from the same linked article. I'm just flabbergasted that the teacher could even think up such a cruel plan and go through with it. If I were the mother of one of the children forced to participate, I would pull my child from the classroom, too. It must have been horribly disturbing for all of the children involved.

The Americans with Disabilities act ought to be able to get involved in this. It's blowing my mind that there are people who think this is not abuse in the school district.

I think maybe they are trying to avoid a lawsuit. by admitting to what happened, they would be opening themselves wide up. by firing the teacher, this would be an admission too. IMO.

Glitch, it isn't proven he has a disability yet if he's still "undergoing tests".

My son that doesn't have a disability was treated like this in Kindergarten. He just didn't understand his boundaries and that bothered the K teacher. He was kicked out of K and he cried everytime we drove by that school for a year. We were finally able to help him through it, with the help of loving friends, family members and a great teacher that took him under her wing.

So disability or not, this was horrible treatment for any child in school, no matter what age.

This REALLY ticks me off!!! Like posted above, I too would love to vote this so called teacher off the planet. I know where this mother's coming from because I feel we were humiliated at my son's kindergarten screening. This really puts me in the right frame of mind for the IEP meeting in one hour!

Excuse my ignorance, but what's an IEP meeting?

My understanding of it is second hand Jenna because I don't have kids in the public schoool system. From what I have learned from Taximom it is a meeting with your childs teacher and guidence counselor. In that meeting a plan is written up about what they will concentrate on in the coming school year and how they will deal with any issues the child may have.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's an IEP meeting?
I.E.P. = Individual Education Plan

Most children follow the standard education program for their grade. ie they learn the same subjects, the same way, the same time, etc.

An IEP means that your child will follow a different plan, one specifically tailored to their needs. The IEP meeting is where the parents (and any representatives), teacher, special needs teachers, advocates, psychologists, principal, etc. all sit down and discuss exactly what your child will learn and how and when they will do it. A prior IEP and any progress or lack thereof is discussed, then new goals are discussed and agreed on.

While the school district is obligated (on paper) to follow the IEP, they are often disregarded. Thus it falls on the parents shoulders (and wallets) to hire lawyers and fight it out in arbitration and possibly court.

An IEP might simply say that the child is easily distracted and must take all tests in a different ( andquieter) room from the class.

Or an IEP can be extremely complicated, detailing every aspect of your child's education, including methods of teaching as well as material taught.

Does that help?

Individual Education Plan for children with identified disabilities. They designate goals and objectives that the child needs to be meeting and test them to ensure that the skills are being mastered.

The plan can encompass a broad range of goals including social, educational and organizational, etc. Just a tip for anyone who has a child with an IEP, make sure you come prepared to a goal or two that you'd like to see. By law they have to incorporate it into the plan AND you ensure that it isn't just a rubber-stamp, standardized meeting.

Be thankful that you don't know what an IEP is. That means you have never needed one.
