Sri Lanka - Charlotte May Lee, 21, frm UK, arrested aft 101-lbs syn cannabis fnd in luggage aft flight frm Bangkok, Thailand to Sri Lanka, 19 May 2025

Speaking to MailOnline from behind bars in the woman's ward of the notorious prison, Miss Lee said she had 'no idea' that there were drugs in her luggage when she set off for Sri Lanka.

She said: 'I had never seen them before. I didn't expect it all when they pulled me over at the airport. I thought it was going to be filled with all my stuff.

'I had been in Bangkok the night before and had already packed my clothes because my flight was really early.

'So I left my bags in the hotel room and headed for the night out. As they were already packed I didn't check them again in the morning.

They must have planted it then.'

And she added: 'I know who did it.'

Miss Lee told us she had been working temporarily on a 'booze cruise' in Thailand but her 30-day visa was about to run out so she decided to take a trip to nearby Sri Lanka while she waited for her Thai visa to be renewed.

She decided to go to the country because it was relatively nearby - only a three-hour flight away - and she had never visited there before.

'I thought while I was waiting for the visa that I'd come to Sri Lanka.

Not that anyone believes her, but I just wanted to point out that this quote from the article makes no sense.

I did some research and there's no such thing as a 30-day visa. Thai tourist visas are 60 days. Work visas (which she would need to work legally) are one year. But those are complicated to arrange, so there's no way she could have gotten one in the short time between her first and second trips to Thailand. And from what I can tell she was only in Thailand for a few days before leaving for Sri Lanka.

Plus, Sri Lanka doesn't have the same sort of nightlife as many other tourism destinations. No way this party girl would pick it over Bali, Vietnam or one of the many other hotspots in Southeast Asia.

Does she really think the authorities are going to believe her lies and let her go?

I've not eaten in two days because the food is just too spicy for me.

'I have told my lawyers - I have three of them - that I need different food. They said they would sort that but they still haven't. I don't know why.

'Fortunately, some of the girls speak English and have shared biscuits and things like that with me, which is nice.

'All the other British people being held here are men, so I don't get to see them.

'There is no communication. You are told nothing. I couldn't arrange an e-visit with my family or even write a letter.'

She managed to phone her friends and speak to the daily mail so is able to communicate with people outside of the prison.

She seems better off than Bella ,she has a jumper and some English speaking cell mates who share their biscuits and other things.

3 lawyers !!! I wonder who is paying for them.

From the sounds of it, CML has an even worse prison future ahead of her if the UK can't extradite her. She might well consider revealing all possible information about her associations and contacts and plead for mercy.
Of course the UK can't extradite her. The crime was committed in Sri Lanka. People are only extradited to countries in which crimes have taken place.

They added that Charlotte is aware of the similar case of Bella Culley - an 18-year-old arrested in Georgia who is also accused of drug smuggling.

However, the two youngsters have never met, and Charlotte "doesn't know if there is any connection" to her own ordeal.
Snipped by me for focus. "Youngsters"??? "Ordeal"??? I wanna scream.

So someone broke into her room when she was out that night, replaced her clothes with 46 kg /101 pounds of drugs, and disposed of her clothes? She wore the same clothes out clubbing as she did to go to the airport? Is she in the habit of traveling with that weight of clothes, and didn't notice that she was carrying over 100 pounds? MOO but color me suspicious of this story.

ALLEGED drug mule Charlotte May Lee was besotted by a mystery man named Rocko, with her worried pals believing he may be able to help her defence.

It comes as prosecutors slammed the Brit's claim that she didn't know she was £1.2 million worth of kush into Sri Lanka - calling her story “made up”.

Emotional Charlotte May Lee, 21, was told she may not be sentenced for another 12 months - and will face at least 20 years in a “hellish” jail if convicted.

She will plead “not guilty” at the next court hearing, which could take place in a fortnight, pals said.

Prosecutors will argue her experience as a stewardess with TUI proves she, “knew to check her luggage before a flight”.

According to her pals, Charlotte was besotted with a British guy in Thailand known as Rocko, who they believe could help her defence

For a while she insists she is innocent, police sources in Colombo have told us she has already changed her story several times, ultimately claiming that a British man – someone she had spent just three days with in the Thai holiday resort of Koh Phi Phi – must be to blame for the illegal haul.

The man, said by Charlotte to be British but of Pakistani origin and apparently known to her only as 'Dan', allegedly bought her airline ticket, telling her he had to remain in Bangkok to see a friend but would join her soon.

He also provided and packed her suitcases and gave her cash for the airline's excess baggage fee, allegedly telling her that one of the pieces of luggage she checked in held his own clothes and belongings.

Sri Lanka, she claims 'Dan' told her, was a 'lovely place for a holiday'. He promised they would have a 'wonderful time' travelling around the country.

Describing roofer's daughter Charlotte as 'desperate and incredibly naive', Sri Lankan police sources say that when they asked for further details about the mysterious 'Dan', Charlotte claimed not to know his surname, where he comes from in the UK, or even to have his phone number.

She has also insisted she has never previously visited Sri Lanka, but the police dispute this. They say she flew into the country in January, although it is not yet clear from where.

'This woman is in a lot of trouble and will not help herself by failing to tell the truth,' a police source told the Mail.

She is pretty foolishto say she has never been to Sri Lanka before when they can prove she has previously visited the country.

The investigation is only just beginning and we will be looking closely at her previous visit, who she was with and where she went.'

To be clear, Sri Lankan police do not believe Charlotte's story. They are examining her phone and retracing her steps with the help of Thai and British authorities, a painstaking inquiry which will involve tracking down CCTV in Bangkok.
