North Carolina has a wide open cross rule. So, he could have gotten up there and just said "No, I didn't kill her" and nothing more, and they could still cross on everything under the sun.

It seems that both these young people, Michelle & Jason, *involved* their mothers in their lives in equal amounts. Seems like Linda is taking the brunt of the hits because Michelle isn't there to stick up for herself. JMO, but this momma's boy told his mother all about his sex life with Michelle, among everything else. Watching Pat on the stand, one could see that she was involved in every decision her *little boy* made, both before & after the murder, again, IMO.
