Steven Powell was involved in disappearance

This is too much like learning that women wait 25 years for their rape kits to be processed. We need a new wave of activism. It's obvious that too many men like Stoney and the Powells fear nothing - they know how to work the system and skirt the law and stay one step ahead of any honest cop or prosecutor.

So, it seems commit a "complex" crime make sure you encrypt your computer and basically walk away with murder.
Obviously, this is the message I am picking up fro listening to and reading this case.
Disgusting.

And don't forget to lie and to tell remarkably obvious lies. Make sure that everyone thinks that you are forgetful and disorganized as well.

What I've learned is even simpler then that, live in a place that wont prosecute without a body because they fear thier "win/loss" record then make sure the body is never found (like in Utah's west desert), hmmmm...and I live here, scary

Yup, dont even have to be complex, you can even do some obsructing, no problem

Honestly, if any one is in a domestic violent marriage esp. in Utah, I suggest they flee to another State asap. It's obvious Utah doesn't care.
Are they waiting for Susan to appear via a seance to say who killed her?
Scot Peterson was prosecuted on much less.

true!

In fact, the cops will GIVE YOU 24 HOURS to get your phony alibi together and tidy up your crime scene.

After they process whatever evidence they find, they will be sure not to ever put it together for a "formal" screening by the DA. The DA will be SURE not to ever insist they do but will "check in" and "keep abreast of anything."

Nothing to see here, folks, we're still looking, it's all ongoing, move along, the menfolk (the ones with their own multiple DV histories) have got it under control.

Encryption can be almost impossible to crack. With the right key, it can take decades, if ever. Computer experts were assigned, but encryption, especially the type Josh would have used, is really pretty impossible to crack. If persistent, it can be done...but again, it will take years to do.

With all due respect, I'm sure this is true for the layperson. But if it's true for the FBI, our whole country is in trouble.

Maybe they need to hire some Ukrainian, Chinese, or South American hackers. If they've accessed the Pentagon and every major corporation, I'm sure Joshie's encryption could be cracked. If there was the political will.
Maybe there is more than one person in WVC worried about what might show up on JP's computer.

Come to think of it, why did JP decide to move to WVC?
Why, of all the suburbs in SLC, did he pick WVC when they moved?
Who made that decision? I'm assuming him because he was so controlling.

Just caught up with all the news. . . .I am sick! I have contended from the very beginning that WVPD failed Braden and Charlie . . . now I know they did. There are laws in place mandating that LE share info with CPS in cases of child endangerment. I am positive that WVPD played a significant role that led to the deaths of these two young children. I have so many words for them . . . but need to not be banned forever from my dear friends here at WS.

It was so much more important for WVPD to tie up their murder case with a pretty bow than it was to protect the lives, health and welfare of Susan's two little boys? SICK AND WRONG!!!!!!!! I wish a pox upon their butts that oozes and stings and forever causes them uncomfort and pain and a horrible stench which they can never rid themselves of! (oh that is a horrible thing to say but it sure felt good . . . be kind to me MODS . . . I am not a frequent flyer of spewing venom usually). OK I feel somewhat better just letting out all of those sick thoughts. . . (sorry to everyone for being so graphic). I will go quietly off in my corner and plot more.

Wanted to share with you an incident regarding a rape kit:

Someone very dear to me told me that she thought she had been raped by police after she passed out and was transported in a squad car. When she regained consciousness, she demanded to be taken to a hospital. She had them do a rape kit.

However, when she went to get the results, somehow it was lost or disappeared...

She died in a tragic car crash (non-alcohol related), and that was never fully investigated either.

That is absolutely horrifying.

BBM1 There is probably a 12 year old out there who would be capable of this.

BBM2 Ding Ding Ding That has been my thought all along.

Women's lives and well being are just not valued. People on the Long Island Serial Killer site talk of how that case may have been investigated differently if the women had been suburban or elite housewives, mothers or business women as opposed to prostitutes. Yet we see here and in many other cases that it really doesn't matter. Women are not properly valued in any economic or social arena.

That is spot on.

Hackers can try it too, but the truth is the truth - encryption is popular because it takes forever to undo. This is true for the layperson OR FBI. That is the bottom line - you can't force it to happen any faster. It has nothing to do with political will or hope - it has everything to do with encryption keys. It may happen one day, but it takes a lot of time, patience and money. Accessing the pentagon through a network is a different story than cracking an encryption key for a hard drive.

As a person in the IT field, I am insulted at the accusations that if only they wanted to help, or cared for the kids, they would have cracked it. Technology doesn't work that way - you cannot will it to give up information like you can a person. Josh knew damn well what he was doing was wrong, and he took extreme steps to cover it up. Nobody can predict or read the mind of a psychopath.

Susan was my friend, and it hurts to know that she's gone. I've been avoiding these forums since yesterday because of the hurtful things being said. The police only have so much power - everybody has rights, even if you suspect them of a crime. They knew, especially after Casey Anthony, they would only ever get one shot to get Josh, and they wanted to nail him to the wall. Look at Steven in the 🤬🤬🤬🤬 case - trying to throw out warrants. Everything had to be done by the book and VERY carefully, or no charge would stick and he couldn't be taken to trial again. Imagine THAT outrage! Screw up the case and try him, and he's let off on a technicality?

Susan is with her sons again, and that monster can't hurt them. I find solace in that.

A 12 year old to break sophisticated encryption isn't going to happen. Imagine using a 256 character key that only you know, that isn't written down. That is why it takes years - you have to determine every possibility of number combination, which is no small task.

So I don't know anything about encryption, but I was wondering where Josh would learn it? I'm thinking if it was from one of his employers, would they perhaps have a clue of how to undo it? Just asking...

Exactly - they wanted to nail Josh. And in the meantime, he nailed the kids.
This is what happens when it's about ego and not about protecting the kids.

As for encryption, I also have IT in the family and friends circle. Josh was no genius-level guy. If he had been, he would have been better employed during his life. He was barely employable for most of it. That should tell you his skill level. Hackers break encryptions every day, encryptions designed by people who ARE geniuses. There's no evidence in this case that cops or the DA prioritized anything.

When did they begin? Who is working on it? How many? What are their backgrounds? How long has it taken in comparable cases? Are federal officials working on it? If not, why not? The questions go on and on. What are they waiting for - a Seance for Susan on the capitol steps, so she can appear and tell them where her body and the sim cards are?

A few experts seem to exist. What mad skillz have the WVP and any other authorities put on the case? If they're so desperate, why haven't they made public appeals as the FBI has done to break other codes? Sorry, but we're not going to go away and be good girls anymore and accept that the boys are "working on it and it could take years." It is not a consolation that the boys are dead. Tomorrow, it will be just another woman, just another set of kids - until the Utah authorities (and the WA authorities) are called to account for what they did - and did not do, and are still not doing. WVC has a prosecutor with a DV history. That's how "today" and fresh this crisis is.

HotLava, I am so sorry that you are so close to this case and I am so sorry for the loss of your dear friend. We are all so raw with emotion learning the information that Utah LE had in their posession - let alone what was encrypted. I had no idea about how difficult encryption cracking could be - but you have given me a glimpse into the process. Thank you for enlightening us on the difficulty of that task. I agree that so much can be lost on technicalities - and the Anthony trial was so sad - but I believe the jurors were just lazy in that case - they had all of the evidence in the room with them - but didn't attempt to dig into those. I would have rather had the children safe - NO MATTER WHAT! We can all Monday Quarterback and postulate ideas of what woulda/shoulda/coulda happened. I think the collective here is that we all want justice for Susan, Charlie and Braden.

You are in my thoughts today and I am sending warm beams of healing light your way - along with all of the others who have suffered from the loss of these incredible souls who did not deserve the heinous deeds done to them. Please know that even though I have spewed more venom today on this case than any other - I am angry about those who failed to protect the kids . . . Whatever their motive! Furthermore, no matter what. . . .it is Josh and his Father that are to blame ultimately.

There are many here who care deeply about your dear friend and her family. We are all just raw with emotion from the recent news. Lets get through this and put our collective forces together to help find Susan!

IMO there is no one left to protect for their case . . . let Utah LE and Washington LE and CPS put all of their cards (and documents) on the table and get to the heart of what went wrong. Let's focus on what lessons can be learned and how to prevent endangering children in the future.
