A lifetime appointment would seal a right-leaning majority on the panel - something the liberal interest groups and Dems vehemently object to. Who knows what might have been “pulled out of the hat” for other nominees. IMO

I realize you’re just speaking for yourself, but what you’re asserting isn’t fully accurate.

Partisan-appointed SCOTUS judges is a relatively new phenomenon in the history of the Supreme Court, starting around 40~ish years ago.

It hasn’t always been this way and it doesn’t have to be.

I’m speaking for myself here, correct. However, I’m sure there are others out there who agree with me. This is a pivotal nomination especially for the Dems and liberal interest groups.

I do agree with you. It doesn’t have to be this way. But sadly, I don’t think it’s going to change anytime soon.

The political fallout from the Kavanaugh vote

Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court is all but certain. The Republican Party has the votes and the battle appears over. The political war, however, is just beginning.

Donald Trump's court pick generated a controversy that captured the nation's attention in a way that few political issues do. It generated daily headlines rivalled only by the US quadrennial presidential elections.

Now that the bombs have been thrown, it's time to assess the fallout.

$3 million raised for Sen. Susan Collins' opponent amid outcry on Kavanaugh vote

But while Collins spoke on the Senate floor and explained why she would be voting for Kavanaugh, people angry over her decision were donating cash to defeat her in her next election.

More than $50,000 was given over the course of her nearly 45-minute speech, bringing the total raised on an online crowdfunding campaign to defeat Collins in her 2020 election to more than $3 million as of 7 p.m.

Supreme Court Justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor are raising concerns about partisanship on the high court.

Kagan and Sotomayor spoke Friday at an event at Princeton University.

Without mentioning President Donald Trump or Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, the justices responded to a question about the politics of the moment.

Kagan says there had traditionally been a “middle” of the court and it’s not clear there will be going forward. She says it’s important for the court to guard its legitimacy, or the public could lose respect for it.

Sotomayor says it’s important for the justices to rise above partisanship and treat one another with respect and dignity.

Kagan and Sotomayor are both Princeton graduates. Both were appointed by Democratic President Barack Obama. Sotomayor was appointed and confirmed in 2009. Kagan joined the court in 2010.

Blast from the past: Susan Collins on the allegation that Franken had sexually harassed his sleeping colleague on the plane , when he was a comedian, by pretending to grope her breasts, and the first few hands on my back allegations, which Franken denied:

Collins:. "I find the allegations credible, appalling, disgusting, and degrading. Sexual harassment and assault have no place in the workplace. (Calls on Senator Franken to resign)."

No hearings or calls for investigation by Collins, no questioning of the accusers or their credibility, no due process. That was Collins then, and then was not very long ago, though my g-d it sure feels like decades ago already.

And here's one very important distinction between Franken and Kavanaugh: Senator Franken was ELECTED. Collins saw no problem in demanding that a Senator chosen and duly elected by the majority of voters in his state be forced out of his elected office without due process.

K? K has never been elected to any office. He has made political & power connections his entire life, and has been groomed and promoted and protected from the get go on through until today.

He wasn't " entitled" to a SC seat, wasn't elected to the Court, and faced far more serious allegations than Franken ever did. Yet.... Collins believes K was treated unfairly, although he was given the opportunity not only to be heard, but to be coached, to be shielded by both the WH and Senate republicans, and without ever having to be put at risk by having the FBI interview him?

We get it.

Kavanaugh does not have to be a choir boy, or someone living the life of a Pope. He was selected to uphold the US Constitution, and he is qualified to do that. Absent any corroborating evidence to prove any of these rumors against him, of course Kavanaugh should be on the High Court.

Rice tweets 'Me' when asked who could challenge Collins - CNNPolitics

Susan Rice, who was President Barack Obama's national security adviser, caused a stir Friday afternoon when she tweeted "Me" when another former Obama official asked who could challenge Sen. Susan Collins in 2020.

The short tweet -- which came less than an hour after Collins, a Maine Republican, announced she would vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court -- caught national and state Democrats by surprise.

I watched Susan Collins' 45-minute speech. Sometimes her voice is annoying, but I like Senator Collins and have respected her views on many issues over the years. Her speech was thoughtful, well-researched, and reassuring. I'm satisfied that she carefully considered all aspects of Kavanaugh's confirmation and has justified her reason for voting in favor of the next Justice of SCOTUS.

I too, thought she did well with a powerfully written and executed presentation.

To those who support Kavanaugh, unequivocally, I'm genuinely curious to know what you hope to see from the SCOTUS in the future, with him on the bench. How do you hope he will contribute to shaping or reshaping our country?

Whoever thinks the bomb throwing is over about how K is being put on the SC is badly mistaken. Especially for the next few months- expect incoming.

I agree -- as a nation were heading for a worse a month than the hell the world has experienced .

Sad times at the end of the day

Senator Murkowski is being sent flowers by those grateful for her vote, and death threats, rape threats, threats against her family, and extremely vile messages filled with hatred from those who thought she was obligated to vote Yes.

"Unable to perform", sounds about right. Women have stated he was harassing, aggressive, and yet...

And, he doesn't even cheat on his wife. Because if he did, I am sure someone would have come forward.

it is strange how all of us keeping falling back to notions of decency - if grabbing things did not change anything maybe we are the silly ones!!

(((Cariis))) Flake isn't going to save the nation. We are going to have to do that ourselves.

I'm confident Flake will do the right thing.

He's doing the right thing by leaving. Unfortunately, he will leave a legacy of spinelessness, but with the ongoing support of his wealthy and powerful party. Flake, indeed.

I believe that he will be a strict constitutionalist. He won't be interpreting the constitution to manipulate laws to fit an agenda. Our courts have become far too liberal. The Ninth circuit thinks that it is a kingdom, and literally works to thwart law Enforcement officers.
