Blast from the past: Susan Collins on the allegation that Franken had sexually harassed his sleeping colleague on the plane , when he was a comedian, by pretending to grope her breasts, and the first few hands on my back allegations, which Franken denied:

Collins:. "I find the allegations credible, appalling, disgusting, and degrading. Sexual harassment and assault have no place in the workplace. (Calls on Senator Franken to resign)."

No hearings or calls for investigation by Collins, no questioning of the accusers or their credibility, no due process. That was Collins then, and then was not very long ago, though my g-d it sure feels like decades ago already.

And here's one very important distinction between Franken and Kavanaugh: Senator Franken was ELECTED. Collins saw no problem in demanding that a Senator chosen and duly elected by the majority of voters in his state be forced out of his elected office without due process.

K? K has never been elected to any office. He has made political & power connections his entire life, and has been groomed and promoted and protected from the get go on through until today.

He wasn't " entitled" to a SC seat, wasn't elected to the Court, and faced far more serious allegations than Franken ever did. Yet.... Collins believes K was treated unfairly, although he was given the opportunity not only to be heard, but to be coached, to be shielded by both the WH and Senate republicans, and without ever having to be put at risk by having the FBI interview him?

We get it.
I couldn't agree more.

Supreme Court Nominations, present-1789 (1789-present)
The Constitution requires the president to submit nominations to the Senate for its advice and consent. Since the Supreme Court was established in 1789, presidents have submitted 163 nominations for the Court, including those for chief justice. Of this total, 125 were confirmed (7 declined to serve). This chart lists nominations officially submitted to the Senate.

U.S. Senate: Supreme Court Nominations: present-1789

---
Without a two thirds cloture vote this SC process will just devolve into polarized, partisan tragedy. There's no incentive to work in a bipartisan way. --very sad. And just terrible for the institution of the court that relies on being above the fray of politics.

The senate website lists all the SC nominations and appointments and one can see by the votes how the senate worked once upon a time.

Today's outcome was not surprising to me given the high voltage political climate today.

Last for the day:

Dr. Ford's attorneys have issued a new statement (someone else will have to link it, if so inclined).

1. Ford doesn't think K should be impeached.
2. She's grateful to Feinstein for trying to honor her wishes of confidentiality.

3. She believed she did the right thing in coming forward, and doesn't regret doing so.

4. She was very hurt and upset about trump mocking her at that rally.

5. Attorneys clarified about Ford being interviewed in CA, and her flying to DC (spoiler alert: Grassley & others lied).

Dr. Ford is the epitome of grace, dignity, and courage. She has earned not only being believed, but the utmost respect.

This week was very eye opening to me.
Seeing these elected people (representatives of our States of the United States)
Come after Bret Kavinaugh, nearly like rapid dogs.
Was astounding. Seriously. I am 64 years old and I have NEVER in my whole life seen anything as vicious as this.
I just do NOT have a sense of humor about this. I am seriously pizzed off at these Senators.
Well, and Yes, that is my opinion, and hopefully it won't be deleted for breaking some sort of rules. Thank You.

Normal high school behavior. I have to tell that to my grandson and granddaughters that this is acceptable. They can drink to blackout and my granddaughters can be assaulted because that is just high school fun.

And my grandson and his friends can participate in getting so drunk that they cannot remember what they have done.

Not sure my children ( the parents ) will go along with it. But I can remind them that this is normal high school behavior and for them to get off of their judgmental high horse.

Why do you assume that he blacked out? Why do you assume that Ford claims are true, especially since no one she claims can back it up, has?

So far based on everything I've read my understanding of human behavior and my own personal experiences, I believe Ford believes something happened. Whether it's as she claimed, or not, she's the only one that knows... do I believe her rendition, absolutely not.

I'm grateful to Dr. Ford for trying to do the right thing for all Americans.

Something just occurred to me while listening to LO in this commentary -

It's not that something was said that was profound - my realization is what has not been said by anyone arguing for BK to be elevated to SCOTUS.

What exactly qualifies him? There is a huge argument for and against with no reason by anyone arguing for BK's appointment. Not one and I have been reading much of what is out there.

When one puts everything aside, what exactly is it that BK will bring that no one else can?

I respect CBF's bravery to no end - she had nothing to gain by coming forward and much to lose. So why has this appointment become about CBF accusations and nothing about BK qualifications? Not one senator voting for this appointment has given any commentary on why they think he is the best of the best.

Someone desperately wants this guy in imo, and it's not the WH. Imo, no one in the WH really knows about such things - which among them has the experience to know any better and what the ramifications will be in the long term?

Someone is dancing the American people around with - look here, don't look over there. And that person(s) is doing a good job imo.

I respectfully challenge those posting here for the appointment of BK to give a statement as to why he is the only good choice at that time for SCOTUS. IOW - what is your specific reasoning for supporting this nomination? Imo it will go a long way to supporting your senators opinion and why the world should listen and agree.

Some know I certainly have not been able to state it nearly as eloquently but I have been pondering this for last year and half - it is an incedible question

I cant figure it out -- it often feels like there is a little black book of stuff to throw out to the media at a moments notice when needed to toss the planet off the latest blooper from DC.

There is some enduring big plan tho -- just like BK. To know a long time ago that one is gonna need a dude who will in all likelihood need to (way down the road) get rid of the state charging agencies to be swept away under pardon - that is long term stuff.

The same is true of the need to have someone all tucked in as it relates to executive power.

It is like lining up ducks in a row so there remain no consequences for ill deeds. There is certainly no one in core of DC that has intellectual curiosity or awareness of how anything works.

It is very strange. This is chess stuff - DC has been horrid at tic tac toe .

Is it Bannon Putin white house council? It is profoundly scary because whomever it is - they are playing very well. It is a very sophisticated entity with much understanding of if I do this now then in 6 months I can do this and then...

There is certainly none of that intellectual capacity in the main group.

And most of the media is as blind as the masses.

Who is it??

IMO from reading lots of things, the progress of a nation depends on birth control. A nation is better off when women can determine how many children they wish to have, Barefoot and pregnant may be a cliche, but it is based on women not being able to continue education or earn a living.

I agree. But not with abortion.

I don't know why people are trying to guilt trip Senator Daines, his daughter's wedding is tomorrow. It has been planned for months. He is going to be there..

Several news/talking heads are trying to make him out to be blowing off his job. Geez, let the guy have a family life. The Senate will let him fly back to vote, although, why he needs to be there in person is rather archaic.

Of course there were other candidates. I haven’t researched their qualifications. I also don’t know if they would have had any “accusers” coming forward or any other type of “accusations” made against them. They could have since this position is a pivotal one.

For any conservative nominee at this point in time, I defer to Lindsey Graham’s comment, “You came to the wrong town at the wrong time.” I agree with him.

A lifetime appointment would seal a right-leaning majority on the panel - something the liberal interest groups and Dems vehemently object to. Who knows what might have been “pulled out of the hat” for other nominees. IMO

They could do something really really really daring and nominate a........ woman!

So no one else has the same qualifications? No one else has done what BK has done? Is there another person who would not have someone come forward with a degree of credible accusations of SA against them? Would someone else have shown better decorum, minus conspiracy theories, under fire than BK did?

Based on all that has happened in the last 4 weeks, I don't even remotely entertain the idea that any conservative would have been qualified according to the Democrats.

Or, even be able to pass the new draconian standards, that will look for anything you have done, or not done, in the last 40 years. I wouldn't be able to pass that gauntlet.

$3 million raised for Sen. Susan Collins' opponent amid outcry on Kavanaugh vote

But while Collins spoke on the Senate floor and explained why she would be voting for Kavanaugh, people angry over her decision were donating cash to defeat her in her next election.

More than $50,000 was given over the course of her nearly 45-minute speech, bringing the total raised on an online crowdfunding campaign to defeat Collins in her 2020 election to more than $3 million as of 7 p.m.

I am more than happy to contribute to her campaign, and hope that she wins.

I believe that he will be a strict constitutionalist. He won't be interpreting the constitution to manipulate laws to fit an agenda. Our courts have become far too liberal. The Ninth circuit thinks that it is a kingdom, and literally works to thwart law Enforcement officers.

THIS! A thousand times, this!!!!

Senator Murkowski is being sent flowers by those grateful for her vote, and death threats, rape threats, threats against her family, and extremely vile messages filled with hatred from those who thought she was obligated to vote Yes.

I believe Collins is experiencing the same. :-(

So, the US Constitution went into effect in 1789. Do you believe we should still be conforming to the norms of that time? Do you believe the founding fathers foresaw the times in which we're living now?

IMO, we're seeing some cracks in the Constitution now.

I hope one day your grandchildren ask you why you assume someone's guilty-until-proven-innocent.

Too late. My high school grandchildren are incredidibly bright and are incredibly liberal as are my children who are even more liberal than I am. And my children’s in laws who are also liberal.

We are Minnesotans from a long line of left wing whackos. Families united! And my grandson’s gf’s family is liberal as well. Oh no!

My granddaughter dropped her bf the very night he did not give her a birthday gift. Lol. The grandparents are left wingers but am unsure what the parents are.

None of us appreciate liars and people who blame others for their problems. Own your problems. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps.
