Some friends brought their dogs to the vigil to honor Elrond and Elros – Phoenix’s loyal dogs. At one point as people were sharing memories, the dogs in attendance began to howl and the people gathered joined in, lifting their voices to honor Phoenix.

Phoenix, 61, grew up in Vallejo, Calif., and attended University of the Pacific. She had two sons, Jesse and Dakota "Kota" Lane, before meeting her late husband, Fred. Fred died unexpectedly in a car accident after they’d moved to Kansas.
Phoenix later met Michel Fournier and they moved to Oregon and married.
According to Jesse Lane, it was after the tragedy of losing Fred that she renamed herself Phoenix to symbolize how she was rising from the ashes of misfortune.
“I was there when the police showed up and told her there’s been an accident, your husband is dead from a car accident,” Jesse Lane shared with those gathered on Dec. 2. “I remember her scream; I remember her collapsing on the ground. I remember it shaking her to her core. I remember her now being a single mom, trying to take care of two kids. And that’s when she renamed herself: Phoenix.”
