CORRECTION, MURDER OCCURRED 10 MARCH 1970

Eastern Daily Press

Murder case 'could still be solved' 50 years on
''Susan Long, 18, had been out dancing on 10 March 1970 and got on a bus home to Aylsham, Norfolk, but her body was found in a country lane the next day.

She had been sexually assaulted and strangled.

Andy Guy, cold case manager for Norfolk Police, said: "We have DNA, so with a name - and DNA - it is solvable."

He added: "Let's say the killer was 30 at the time, he would be 80 now - there's a chance he could still be alive. And even if he is not, there are tests we can do to establish that DNA link.

"We could even exhume a body if it came to that."

''She left at about 22:25 GMT and was seen getting on the Aylsham bus, which arrived at her usual bus stop - the Market Place - at 23:10.

"She had just got a car so she knew it would be one of her last bus journeys. Sadly, it turned out to be the case," said Mr Guy.''

''Miss Long's killer - described as "panicked" by Mr Guy - made no attempt to conceal her body, which was on view near a farm entrance.

She was fully clothed but a bracelet and shoe were missing and have never been recovered.

There were no signs of a violent struggle and a pathologist believed she had died at about midnight.

Forensic evidence revealed whoever had sexually assaulted her had a rare blood type.

Officers took 835 blood samples, spoke to 3,700 people and completed 10,000 questionnaires while knocking on doors.''

''Following forensic recovery of semen left at the scene, it was established that the offender was from a rare blood group and blood samples were taken from men living in the Aylsham area.

Other forensic evidence included flakes of car paint found on Susan's clothing.

With the advance in DNA technology, and, more recently, familial DNA searching, hope has been renewed that the offender will be traced.

Since 2003, officers and staff have been researching DNA comparisons and DNA familial work.''

''However, 2010 has seen a new line of enquiry with DNA familial comparisons based on a likelihood ratio list which has resulted in new factors being built into familial searches.

Despite this extensive work, the offender has still not been identified.''

LE say the perp had a rare blood type wish they would say what type it was, and/or - if the perp in Susan L's case, was a non-secretor, like The Golden State Killer, J. D'Angelo?
GOLDENSTATEKILLER.COM
DNA, paint, shoe size, and the perpetrator's non-secretor status are pretty much the only identifying facts we have to go by when it comes to definitively tying some of these crimes together.

Definition of NONSECRETOR
: an individual of blood group A, B, or AB who does not secrete the antigens characteristic of these blood groups in bodily fluids (such as saliva)

''What's the rarest blood type?
  • AB-negative (. 6 percent)
  • B-negative (1.5 percent)
  • AB-positive (3.4 percent)
  • A-negative (6.3 percent)
  • O-negative (6.6 percent)
  • B-positive (8.5 percent)
  • A-positive (35.7 percent)
  • O-positive (37.4 percent)

Only 20% of population are non-secretors and from what I read it does not matter what blood type you are. So having rare blood type does not mean bigger chance of being non-secretor.

Just to clarify, perp of this case is not classed as non-secretor but only having rare blood type.

In general, the rarest blood type is AB-negative and the most common is O-positive.

To add: I found non-secretor details fascinating too. First time I heard about it in some case where perp's blood type (or was it DNA?) from his semen did not match his blood type from his body/skin and for those reasons he was not caught for a long time as he was ruled out due to this miss/match previously. Can't recall which case it was though.

Here is link with easy explanation of non-secretor and some interesting details about blood - Understanding Genetics . And apparently anyone can find out if they are non-secretor or not in their DNA test details. Or at least in this article they stating 23andMe includes details of it in their DNA test results.
