Clarence Shaffer said he heard the moment his neighbors, state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot.

It was just around 2 a.m. while he was up watching television that he heard the "pow, pow" of gunshots, Shaffer, 71, told NBC News. He rushed to wake up and tell his wife that someone might have been shot and that he was going outside.

"I didn't see anything, but then, all at once, I seen a black — dark black — car backing out of the Hoffmans' driveway," Shaffer said. "And as he backed out, he turned his headlights on and put the police lights on. And I thought, 'What the heck's a cop leaving the scene after the gunshots?'"

Wow!!!!

I’m surprised he doubled back to this area. But thinking someone may have picked him up? He may or may not still be in the area.

Here's latest video from KARE from the area. Just 5 minutes away from their farm. Reporter was out there yesterday during the search

ETA: He probably left in one of those vehicles seen at their farm yesterday. I assumed they had a few older kids, so these may have been cars of the teens, young adult kids.
Green Isle isn't far from Minneapolis. An hour. If I had to guess, he ditched that car before LE descended on the property.

My thoughts too. The way that cowboy hat was placed visibly on the side of the road seems like he wanted it to be found….and the car left suspiciously near the trees.

Yep - classic look here, not there - red herring. In the meantime he’s been picked up and is heading elsewhere.

Glad the wife can no longer help. Is there confirmation she was arrested?

Weird. Why not park it IN the trees? Still it's 5 minutes from his house of a car LE didn't yet know he'd been driving so no reason to conceal it, just get it off the road.

He probably Frisbeed the cowboy hat as he drove away.

Is he even in the area or did Jenny drop him off on her way out of town?

Thanks! I was listening and hadn't gotten to that part yet. It's a good video, has a lot of information.

With any luck, LE will persuade the wife to reveal his location or where he was headed. Oddly, the black car in the video was parked in a field near a tree line, about 100 yards from the road. A diversion? Trying to make LE think he went into the woods? They searched the area around his farm for hours yesterday.

ETA: A data dump from the cell phone towers out there might reveal a lot, possibly burner phones, etc.
LE also used helicopters above the home and treeline, etc. when they searched the home yesterday. In any event, I think the wife will provide information and it won't be long before VB is located and an arrest is made, or an attempted arrest is made.

I'm trying to figure out how the police didnt get him when they came upon him and he fired at them. Sounds like there was more than one police officer shooting at him and he was on foot- kind of puzzling.
This is just a guess. Possibly the other car resembling a squad may have thrown them for a minute - not to mention being shot at. As they entered the home they came upon Mr Hortman and rendered first aid. I also think it's possible that the shooter had cased the area. He knew what to do and where to go if he needed to. He may have had a plan B, C and D....

Just thinking ...

In the live feed they said they checked bookings and there was nothing yet on her. They said more info about all of this would probably be coming out in the next official news briefing.

I would imagine this is a fluid situation now and that won’t be for a while.

Looking at the timeline in the link above. I think LE might have caught him on camera somewhere late afternoon Saturday, back in the Green Isle area. Because they also went back there later in the afternoon.

I don’t understand why he would do that, seems pretty counter intuitive if you’re the object of a manhunt. But he must have a reason.

It might even be a tactic from LE. To use this news of an arrest as to compel him to give it up.

Gosh that is scary that he left the hat and also the car out there between Belle Plaine and Green Isle.
I’m hoping he does not have someone who met him out there- one of his adult children?
We have not heard if these two kids-daughters have been located

IMO

maybe this is a dumb question but what could they arrest his wife for at this point? i’m guessing it would be for helping him flee or even prepare everything, but could they already have gathered enough evidence for this at this point when they haven’t caught the perpetrator?
