SUSPECT IN CUSTODY MN - 2 Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses were shot by someone impersonating a police officer, JUNE 13,2025

i remember earlier reports said a father’s day card was found in his car. it made me wonder if he didn’t live with his children or they knew they wouldn’t see him on sunday. though tbh there could have been other reasons to give him his card early, jmo.
Maybe he received a card in the mail from one of his children who wasn''t living at home and he just put it in his car after picking up the mail.

The fact his note admitted guilt for the shootings yet not reason for his “war”, makes me wonder if he will give motive.

“David and Ron, I love you guys. I made some choices, and you guys don’t know anything about this, but I’m going to be gone for a while. May be dead shortly, so I just want to let you know I love you guys both and I wish it hadn’t gone this way,” Carlson read from his phone in a video.

“I don’t want to say anything more and implicate you in any way because you guys don’t know anything about this. But I love you guys and I’m sorry for all the trouble this has caused,” the message read.
Minnesota lawmakers' shooting suspect search enters day two as chilling texts emerge

Boelter also allegedly texted his wife, "Words are not gonna explain how sorry I am for this situation ... there's gonna be some people coming to the house armed and trigger-happy and I don't want you guys around."
Chilling details emerge in Minnesota shootings as Vance Boelter faces federal charges: 'Stuff of nightmares'

the friend/roommate he texted immediately called police after receiving it, worried his friend might be suicidal.

Mrs. Boelter's response is to grab cash and passports and load up their kids and head for the hills.

Color me not impressed.
I think her priority was to protect her children, so she grabbed her gun and ammunition and some cash and passports and left. From the message, she might have thought he'd gotten involved in some kind of shady deal and she was terrified for her children's safety and her own.

Yes, could be.

Police found tactical garb inside the SUV, as well as a bag of ammunition that contained a Father's Day card addressed to the suspect.

I never get the US approach to justice that enables the media seemingly full access to evidence prior to any criminal trial. It must be a UK upbringing that makes me view this as potentially compromising any future proceedings.

Why is it this way? Does the US have sub judice?
I am not a lawyer. The Fourth Amendment protects against illegal search and seizure. It's helpful to give the public assurance that there's confidence that the right person is being held and charged and there's not a danger to the general public in some cases. In big cases like this that have gotten a lot of publicity, sometimes there will be a press conference laying out the major elements of why they have confidence that they've got the right person/people. What we're being told in these charging documents may or may not make it into evidence in the court case.

The house was paid for and he made about $2,000 a month from the funeral home job, maybe they had some savings or even a small business loan or something like that while he and his wife were trying to set up a private security business. In any event, the federal court judge today ordered an audit of his finances before they appoint him a public defender, so we should know more by the June 27 federal court hearing.
How do you know the house was paid for? I may have missed that.

It will be up to the prosecution to give motive to the jury, although they don't have to do so. I assume the defendant, VB, will be advised by his attorney not to say anything, so we may not hear from him directly about his motive although we can speculate from his writings, etc.

Who sells a car and an ebike to a random stranger for $900? That part of the story doesn't make sense to me.
IMO? For drugs.

eta Not clear if VB had a mortgage or not on his house so I deleted my post.

Maybe. But was she sure he wasnt drunk, or under some influence? Wouldnt she report it, being worried about his safety, if this came out of the blue? Did she contact room mates? Why have 10k lying around?

Do you have a source for this? I can't find anything saying there's no mortgage.

See this post. VB told the court he owns his house.

Boelter says he can't afford a private attorney

From CNN's Whitney Wild
In federal court Monday, Vance Boelter said he cannot afford a private attorney to represent him against the six federal charges he faces, including murdering state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband with a firearm.

Boelter said he has a part-time job and makes about $540 per week, and has no other sources of income. He told the judge he owns his own home and has seven cars in his name.

The judge said it’s unlikely Boelter can afford a private attorney, given the seriousness of the charges and is going to recommend a federal public defender. He asked the public defender’s office to run a financial inquiry.

See this post.

IMO people say they own a car or condo or house even if they owe money on it via monthly payments/mortgage. Maybe I'm wrong about that.

I took it to mean he owned it (no mortgage), but maybe that's not the case.

I wonder if VB and his wife cashed out retirement savings in order to try to get their private security business going and that's how they had so much cash on hand/in the bank. At 57 years of age, VB might have had retirement savings from his previous employments.

Legally, you own your home even if you have a mortgage. It's used as collateral for the mortgage but the bank doesn't own it, you do.
