Sweden - Gay Marriage Now Legal In.....

  • #361
Honestly, I still can't believe its taking so long!!!

More good news (though harder to understand): an appellate court in Illinois rejected a motion to dismiss a lawsuit fighting for gay marriage in that state.

The suit will go forward and we can keep our fingers crossed that it will be successful.

It's true the process is slow, but just a few years ago who among us could imagine legal gay marriage ANYWHERE in the US? It's now legal in nearly a third of the states.

Gay marriage is legal and America is becoming a third-world laughing stock. I wonder if there could be a correlation.

You're joking, surely?

Nope. I believe when a person/nation goes against the will of God, there is a price to pay - don't you?

I don't believe in God.

I do believe in God. I believe God is loving and wants me to 'love my neighbor as myself'. I believe God's word is 'Judge not or you shall be judged'. My goal in life is to increase my tolerance and decrease my tendency to be judgmental and critical; I'm working toward loving and accepting all. I'm faithful that God is forgiving me on a daily basis when I have lapses in moving toward this goal.

ETA: I believe the saddest thing about America, and the only reason we should be a 'laughing stock' is because anyone is still discriminated against, and because anyone has no food to eat. There is no humane reason for either of these things...

Shaking my head....and biting my tongue.

Perhaps more relevant to this discussion is the fact that America isn't a "third world laughing stock" anyway, God or no God.

Have you decided where to emigrate to? I hear Iran is pretty harsh on LGBT folks so God must be pretty pleased with them, no?

BBM: Excellent point and deserves notice. Personally, I would add healthcare to that list as well. It's shameful that we have citizens of America actively fighting against health, welfare and human rights which should be afforded to us all. That's what should be making this country a "laughingstock".

No, the only correlation is with the ignorance of some Americans.

Most of Western Europe recognizes gay marriage. Nobody is laughing at them. Canada recognizes gay marriage. Ditto.

Mexico and Argentina (usually considered "third world") also have legal gay marriage.

I shudder to ask, but where is the evidence that ANYBODY is laughing at the U.S.? IMO, it's far more likely that most of the world thinks we are bullies and not at all funny.

Gosh - I don't stop in much, but I love seeing this thread going strong as gay marriage becomes legal in more and more places! It warms my heart to watch our world changing in this fashion. Love to all, SCM

I believe in god; I also believe he has plans for all of us, gay or straight. Who am I to say that gay marriage is against the will of god? Love is one of the key principles that Jesus taught. The entire point of existence is to experience the joy of love, whether it be romantic love or love for humanity. I love my friends and family, many who are gay and lesbian. I was full of love and joy for them when they announced their engagements. I truly don't see how allowing them to marry hurts anyone. I also feel that the many translations of the bible and other religious texts are taken too literally and are not applied correctly for the time we are living in. MOO

Exxon to offer benefits to same-sex couples in US

http://www.centurylink.net/news/rea...p-exxon_to_offer_benefits_to_samesex_coupl-ap

NEW YORK (AP) — Exxon Mobil Corp. said Friday that it will begin offering benefits to legally married same-sex couples in the U.S. for the first time starting next week.

The company says it will recognize "all legal marriages" when it determines eligibility for health care plans for the company's 77,000 employees and retirees in the U.S.

That means if a gay employee has been married in a state or country where gay marriage is legal, his or her spouse will be eligible for benefits with Exxon in the U.S. as of Oct. 1.........more.......

I think they are following suit to Walmart who announced the other day that they will offer benefits to (I believe) all partners whether gay or heterosexual. Can't print the link right now but I will try later. They were quick to point out that it was a business decision, not an indicator of their moral/ethical viewpoint. But, it was noted that it was expected that other companies would quickly follow...

I thought it was a new announcement but there were a ton of articles like the one below at the end of August:

http://www.npr.org/2013/08/28/216325229/wal-mart-to-offer-same-sex-health-benefits

Retailing giant Wal-Mart has announced it will extend comprehensive medical benefits to domestic and legally married same-sex partners beginning next year. Wal-Mart is the single biggest U.S. employer outside of the federal government.
