I have hopes that your state will come around in 2142!

(Nice to see you, my friend.)

Sigh......you are probably correct - right before my beloved home state of SC! Always nice to see you too, sir!

I'm not a huge Cory Booker fan, but after reading his comments in the article linked above (which I can't "quote" because I don't know how to cut and paste on my son's Chromebook although he tried to explain it to me) I'll cut him a little slack. At least for the moment, lol!

Meanwhile, discrimination is alive & well in Missouri & other states:

"Missouri — When Missouri Highway Patrol Cpl. Dennis Engelhard died on an icy highway on Christmas Day 2009, he left behind a legal dilemma: Should his same-sex partner, who had been with him almost 15 years and with whom he was raising a son, be eligible for the survivor pension benefits that a traditional spouse would have received from the state?

In a decision sure to stoke the nation's ongoing debate over what constitutes a family, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the answer is no."

It's weird. As I read this post, I also have on Dr. Drew and they are covering the FL couple who had children specifically for the purpose of raping them.

They are heterosexual.^

Entitled to all kinds of rights not allowed gay/lesbian couples.

Because GLBT are "deviants".

That is so wrong on so many levels. The survivor pension belongs to him! :(

Lol, I'm in LA. Never gonna happen in MY lifetime. :(

And I still have another 40+ years left, I hope.

As a wise woman once told me, "Never is a long, long time."

Forty years ago, gay people in California were fighting to keep their jobs as teachers; the proposition was defeated, but its primary opponent--Harvey Milk--was assassinated within a couple of years. Meanwhile in South Florida, Anita Bryant was leading the charge to successfully repeal anti-discrimination laws.

Who could have imagined how far Americans would come in 4 decades?

***

BTW, the Hawaii Senate voted for full marriage equality today. The bill now goes to the Hawaii House.

Right you are.

I remember thinking that Obama would never win the Presidential election because this country would "never" support a black President. But I voted for him anyhoo. And here he is on his second term. :). So you really never know.

Thanks for your fresh perspective. And so positive! :).

Well, to be honest, it depends on the day.

But when an issue is explained to the American people in terms of simple fairness, we usually step up.

Now if only somebody would explain universal healthcare as clearly...

scm's link above has been updated: marriage equality now passed by BOTH houses of the Illinois legislature and merely awaits the governor (who has already said he will sign)! Gay couples may begin to marry in IL on June 1. (Why the delay? So folks in North and South Illinois can get used to the idea? My sister-in-law lives outside of Rockford and, though very nice to me, never mentions that her brother and I are married. Uh oh.)

I'm happy to say I've actually lost count of the states on the right side of this issue and have to look it up! (HI and IL will make it 16 with full marriage equality.)

OT: the demise of DOMA will cost me nearly $500/month (because my husband and I are now a legal "family") under the ACA. Just wanted to throw in something to keep the haters happy. TIC and LOL (but not about the $500--oh, well).

Sorry for treating this post like my personal blog. I'll stop now.

As expected, a referendum has been announced on the issue of same sex marriage in the Republic of Ireland...

The decision, announced on Tuesday, is a victory for the deputy prime minister, Eamon Gilmore, who has been lobbying for a national vote.

The vote will be held as part of a special "constitution day", in which a wide-ranging referendum could result in other changes to the Republic's constitution such as the abolition of blasphemy laws.

Before Tuesday's cabinet meeting, Gilmore said he hoped the Fine Gael-Labour government would back moves toward full equality in Ireland.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/nov/05/ireland-referendum-gay-marriage

Its not until 2015, but I think the wait makes it a dead cert that it will be legalised. It probably would be even if held tomorrow, but by 2015 the Irish public will have already seen the Same Sex Marriage Bill come into force in the UK and will have seen that Britain hasn't gone to hell in a handbasket as a result. That will make it less susceptible to scaremongering from the antis.

I do believe in God. I believe God is loving and wants me to 'love my neighbor as myself'. I believe God's word is 'Judge not or you shall be judged'. My goal in life is to increase my tolerance and decrease my tendency to be judgmental and critical; I'm working toward loving and accepting all. I'm faithful that God is forgiving me on a daily basis when I have lapses in moving toward this goal.

ETA: I believe the saddest thing about America, and the only reason we should be a 'laughing stock' is because anyone is still discriminated against, and because anyone has no food to eat. There is no humane reason for either of these things...

I agree with this post. I also want to add. I am a christian myself, but my brother is gay. We were molested by an uncle when we were little, his was a 4 yr thing from age 2 to 6. He tried to tell that this uncle was "Nasty" and was told that "all men are nasty". Nice right? This man then tried to kill my brother as this man baby sat us. He had charge of picking him up from school and told him to cross the street when a car was coming. He was first grade. I know because I was also in the car. I know this man threatened to kill our mother if we talked. My brother was in a coma for 6 months becuause his head was literally busted open and he was declared dead at the scene..he was revived but it was almost 2 minutes later and during therapy/recovery is when they discovered he'd been sexually abused. DO I not love my brother no matter what? Is it his fault he is gay? I honestly do not think so and I would never turn my back on my brother. The evil is among us but he is not one. He deserves just as good of a life as I do he deserves happiness. He is actually not with anyone right now, but if he were I'd certainly not stand in judgement of him or his choice of mate.
