Switzerland - 40 dead and 116 injured in fire in bar in Crans-Montana, Swiss ski resort, 1 January 2026

The issue with the pulmonary problems is because unlike simple burning of wooden materials, the toxic fumes released as the polysyrene or polyurethane foam panels flameover and melt produce extremely toxic chemical smoke at up to 1000F. This severely damages the trachea and the lungs.

For those that survive, they will have lifelong challenges with their lungs, kidneys and liver, and this is even on top of the long and very painful care they must undergo with debridement, wound dressing changes, and the constant threat of infections from their burns.
I assume that any who survive long enough will be assessed for possible transplant surgery.

The portugese who died in the tragedy is named as 22 years old Fany Magalhães

I so wish the Daily Mail hadn't mentioned this young lady's name. I gather though other newspapers have too.

Even if they could have toned it down a bit by putting 'Accidently' started the fatal fire''.

I can't even imagine what her family, friends and all who knew her are thinking reading that. They have enough to contend with due to her tragic death, along with the others who tragically died.

But no way was she to blame, she never intended to cause what happened.

Agreed. The headline Waitress wearing a crash helmet 'who started fatal Swiss resort inferno' could make people think it was deliberate, which it obviously wasnt.
But that's the DM for you. So much clickbait.

That is why it is up to customers to choose.
Be careful where you decide to spend your time and hard earned money.

Mind your safety folks.
Trust your own common sense.

Yes. But I remember going to clubs when I was young. Looking for safety exits was the absolute last thing on my mind. It was all about dancing, drinking, hanging out with friends. So much for that.

It is all a matter of trust.

Trust that owners, managers, authorities follow safety procedures.

But as this tragedy shows
our trust as clients/customers may be naive.
Because it seems
some don't care about safety of their clients :(

As we say in my country:

"Can you count?
So...
Count on yourself!"

Greed -- owning multiple businesses that you renovate dangerously and run poorly, rather than just opening one business, and doing it all well, safely, and right.

Why-oh-why are these types of foam panels even allowed to be sold in home improvement stores (if he's telling the truth about where he bought it?).

And that's EXACTLY why there need to be strict regulations on predictable hazardous situations, dangerous spaces with bad lighting, all kinds of things that do function to protect the fun-loving public.

These panels are useful for many reasons that don't have to do with a commercial venture. The home improvement stores don't need to have regulations to provide a product that the general population would not be using in a reckless manor.

The issue is building and construction standards for commercial ventures not being identified and regulated.

People don't have to be reckless for a fire to start in a house. This foam burns extremely quickly and produces unusually toxic smoke. So why would it be acceptable to sell for use in private homes?

I believe it should not be for sale for use as a building material anywhere.

Well, it was not that long ago that asbestos-impregnated ceiling tile was all the rage.

In our current lives, our everyday homes are filled with synthetic materials that are capable of the same kinds of flashover as occurred at Le Constellation.

We have synthetic carpets, synthetic draperies, synthetic upholstry fabrics, synthetic-filled throw pillows, synthetic throws for our chairs and couches, synthetic posters or art on the walls, furniture made from plastic derivatives with cushions made from synthetic foam products, and then all the plastic do-dads around.

In essence, our homes are not as safe from the incredibly dangerous flashover as they once were.

The other difference was that the ignition source at Le Constellation appears to be the sparklers, which burn at shockingly high temperatures that will ignite very quickly, and by design, they shed the tiny burning embers.

"In the aftermath of the tragedy,
Cyane's parents condemned the nightclub's owners,
alleging an emergency exit had been shut to prevent revellers from sneaking in without paying a €1,000 table charge
- rather than hiring a doorman.

They said the budgeting decision made by the bar's owners, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, may have cost lives.

'Jacques had closed the emergency exit because he was afraid people would come in without paying.

The tables cost 1,000 euros.
And if you can't even put a guard at that door...
If the door had been open,
maybe there wouldn't have been any deaths'."

"In the aftermath of the tragedy,
[C]'s parents condemned the nightclub's owners,
Quote snipped by me.

Her parents aren't wrong. I don't know if that's true re: the table fees, but the point stands either way. Sincere condolences for their loss.

A cover charge of € 1,000 would be outrageous and if true, would be a hugely important point for the prosecution to prove.

The same tragedy had already happened 😔 in Brazil portrayed in a film.

"Endless Night"
is a dramatic miniseries that had its premiere on Netflix in 2023.

Inspired by true events that shocked Brazil.

The series tells the story of a nightclub fire that, in an instant, turned a party into hell.
242 people perished in the flames and smoke, and many more were injured.

This story is based on true events that took place in January 2013 in the Brazilian city of Santa Maria.
There, during a concert, a tragic fire, caused by stage pyrotechnics, erupted at the Kiss nightclub.
Within minutes, the flames and toxic smoke trapped hundreds of young people inside the building.
The investigation revealed a series of negligences: a lack of adequate emergency exits, inadequate soundproofing, and dramatic delays in the rescue operation.

The same old, sad story

Yes, exactly! I also remember when a fire broke out at the Lame Horse (Khromaya Loshad) nightclub in Perm, Russia, in December 2009. I was reading articles about it at the time, and many people blamed corruption. The fire was caused by sparks from pyrotechnics used inside the club. Some exits were closed, and people ran toward a single, very narrow exit. Many also died after inhaling toxic fumes. This story reminded me a lot if the Khromaya Loshad fire.
