CSS INSURANCE CLOSES SIX BRANCHES FOR SECURITY REASONS

Blick.ch
https://www.blick.ch/news/schweiz/z...en-polizei-riegelt-altstadt-ab-id7038782.html

After the chainsaw attack by Franz Wrousis, the CSS Insurance has taken measures. Six branches remain closed.
These include the locations Schaffhausen, Amriswil, Kloten, Bülach, Rorschach and Kreuzlingen. Only the branches in St.Gallen, Winterthur and Frauenfeld remain open. But they are being upgraded."Until the perpetrator is caught, they are protected additionally by security personnel and through further measures. All employees were again made aware of the practices in case of emergencies. This includes, among other things, a five-point plan, that employees can apply in emergencies," according to CSS spokeswoman Christina Wettstein to the St.Galler Tagblatt. And not only that: Customers must first identify themselves before they can enter the branches that are still open.

I am dumbfounded as to how this person was walking about freely; it seems he has had a lot of troublesome behaviors in his past. The more articles that are posted here, the more horrible this becomes. I keep hoping the next article will say he has been apprehended.

SUSPECT WAS ARRESTED 60 KM FROM SCHAFFHAUSEN

BR24.de
http://www.br.de/nachrichten/kettensaegen-angreifer-schweiz-gefasst-100.html

One day after the attack with a chainsaw in Schaffhausen, the police has caught the perpetrator. The man has been arrested in Thalwil near Zurich, according to the police in the evening.
How the man covered the distance of about 60 kilometers from the crime scene to Thalwil remains still open. The police did not mention details of arrest. More details will be announced tomorrow.

BBM

During the day, all the news was about searches around Schaffhausen, and the public was advised to stay away from the woods, holiday activities for children were cancelled and so on ... and all the while he was either already 60 km to the South, or on his way.

I was surprised that there were no further CCTV images of him. As if he had evaporated after the attack. Can't imagine that he wasn't seen with his chainsaw, either by members of the public or on CCTV.
He may even have taken the train or the bus, it takes about one hour from Schaffhausen to Thalwill and he might have arrived before the news broke.

THALWILLER PIZZERIA-CHEF: "I IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZED THE WANTED MAN"

Blick.ch
https://www.blick.ch/news/schweiz/t...otorsaegen-mann-sofort-erkannt-id7048531.html

Sheer relief. After nearly 36 hours in a state of emergency, the news of the arrest of the chainsaw man Franz Wrousis (51) came yesterday evening as a relief for the population. The police apprehended him in Thalwil ZH and arrested him. It is still unclear how Wrousis managed the 63 km from Schaffhausen to the community on the left bank of Lake Zurich.

Liman Kabashi, boss of the Pipponi pizzeria, recognized the wanted man. He says to BLICK: "He walked past the pizzeria at about 5:30 pm. I immediately recognized his face and called the police."

Kabashi reports of those anxious moments: "He carried a bag and walked towards Migros [supermarket]. I went after him to be really sure that it was him. He seemed dreamy, withdrawn into himself. I then informed through Whatsapp policemen I am friends with."

The communication that brought much relief was preceded by a tense day.
After an unsuccessful search at night, the Schaffhauser police presented fresh images in the morning. They show Franz Wrousis at an ATM: in outdoor jacket and with receding hairline. The pictures were the start of an international search for the attacker.
The nervousness culminated at midday with the storming of a line bus by the Schaffhauser police. A reader reported the action to BLICK: "At least ten officers stormed the bus at around 12:20 hrs at the CMC stop." A suspicious person was controlled without the search being successful.

In the town, also sirens and helicopters could be heard. In Feuerthalen ZH a helicopter was circling for a long time over a forest area. In Schlatt TG, too, forces gathered in the late afternoon to search a forest nearby.

In the meantime, the Schaffhauser police had even announced tips on Facebook for the public on how to behave if one happened to meet the wanted man. They warned about activities in forests. This also affected a number of Schaffhausers who had planned an excursion. According to "Radio Top" various activities of the town's holiday pass had to be canceled - two events in forests in the area were axed. The person in charge, Désirée Steffenoni: "Parents have reacted with relief, the children were disappointed. We can not make up for the missed events."

This morning at ten o'clock the Schaffhauser police will announce more details at a press conference.

CHAINSAW MAN WAS ARMED WITH CROSSBOWS AND ARROWS

Blick.ch
https://www.blick.ch/news/schweiz/z...en-polizei-riegelt-altstadt-ab-id7038782.html

The chainsaw-attacker of Schaffhausen did not resist his arrest. He was arrested on Tuesday evening in Thalwil ZH without any resistance. The 51-year-old was alone and "behaved decently and cooperatively", the Schaffhauser police announced on Wednesday. He was armed with two crossbows and arrows. He is detained in a Schaffhaus prison.

Rawy Landolt of the Schaffhauser police is speaking. They were relieved that the arrest had taken place.

More than 300 policemen from the Schaffhaus police were involved in the search.

The first prosecutor, Peter Sticher, says Wrousis was arrested at 7 pm. The arrest took place without resistance. "He behaved decently and cooperatively." The arrest took place thanks to tips from the public.

Wrousis carried two loaded crossbows with arrows and pointed wooden sticks. The chainsaw is still being searched, he did not carry it with him.

Why was Franz Wrousis transferred to the legal medicine institute?
Landolt: It is being clarified, what the health condition of Wrousis is and whether he himself is also injured.

What did the perpetrator carry with him except his arms at the time of his arrest, and how did he get to Thalwil?
Landolt: We do not know how he got there.
What other things he carried with him is also still unclear.

How many tips were there from the population?
Landolt: There is no exact number yet. The evidence we received, however, helped to capture Wrousis in Thalwil ZH. The crucial tip came 45 minutes before the arrest.

A journalist wants to know whether Franz Wrousis has already been questioned during the arrest.
Sticher: There will be a first interrogation of the accused this afternoon, so far nobody has been able to speak with Wrousis about why he did this.

Was there any evidence that the man was dangerous?
Landolt: From the very beginning, we have said that the man is dangerous and that he likes to be in the woods. I find it a good achievement from the police that he could be arrested so quickly.

It was unclear whether Wrousis had looked neglected at the arrest, and where he had spent the night, Sticher says.

The man was mentally conspicuous and confused. Can this be confirmed?
Landolt: That's what we have to clarify. For us, the focus was on the search and arrest. It is only now that the investigations can begin.

Has one heard from the CSS Insurance anything about the reasons for the attack?
Landolt: We can not say anything yet, CSS employees have been interrrogated as witnesses, but we would like to confront Wrousis first.

How big were the crossbows found at Wrousis and the pointed wooden pieces?
Landolt: These are pistol crossbows, which are slightly smaller than the classic crossbows. After the evidence is secured, photos of the weapons will follow, Landolt promises.

SCHAFFHAUSEN: PROCEEDINGS AGAINST CHAINSAW MAN HAVE STARTED

Zentral+News
https://zentralschwiiz.news/schaffhausen-sh-verfahren-gegen-motorsaegen-angreifer-eroeffnet/

After the suspect in the chainsaw incident was arrested at 6:50 pm by the cantonal police in Thalwil / ZH on the evening of the 25th of July 2017, he was brought to the Cantonal Prison Schaffhausen shortly before midnight by the Schaffhauser police after evidence was secured and a medico-legal examination was carried out.

The prosecutor in charge informed the accused of the arrest yesterday afternoon in the presence of the attorney on call and today presented a request for examination at the enforcement action court of the canton Schaffhausen.

The Prosecutor's Office has opened criminal proceedings against the accused for several criminal offenses against life and limb. We point out that the presumption of innocence applies.

The authority over information lies exclusively with the public prosecutor's office of the canton of Schaffhausen. The confidenciality of investigation applies. The public prosecutor's office is solely responsible for media communications, should this be necessary. Therefore, the Schaffhauser police will not provide any further case-related information, background information or interviews.

Do the Swiss tend to withhold information until a trial, or case gets closed?

What a mess this man must be. Armed with crossbows, no less. How did he manage to stay under the radar for so long, I wonder.

thanks again, ZaZara, for all the updates.

The criminal investigation is secret so as not to jeopardize the trial IMHO.

The attorney who happened to be on roll call has offered to take up the defense of Franz W. as the newspaper calls him now.

When asked, Beyeler said his client is "not doing well', he is in prison, where he is being cared for by doctors.

MANY QUESTIONS REMAIN OPEN AFTER THE ARREST OF THE CHAINSAW MAN

Blick.ck
https://www.blick.ch/news/schweiz/m...ie-letzten-meter-seiner-flucht-id7055368.html

On Tuesday evening at 7 pm the hunt for Franz Wrousis is finally over. The chainsaw man is caught. 45 minutes after the important tip comes from the public, the handcuffs click in Thalwil ZH on the Gotthardstrasse. 63 kilometers away from Schaffhausen, where the loner had injured the employees Antonio B. * (45) and Mike F. * (40) with a chainsaw in a branch of the CSS insurance company on Monday. Out of nowhere. For as the CSS announced yesterday, Wrousis had a thick file with them, but he was always friendly and never threatened anyone.

But the twice convicted 51-year-old is also armed at his arrest. He does not carry the chainsaw, but he does carry two loaded pistol crossbows and pointed wooden sticks. Pistol crossbows are not a weapon, they are sports equipment, but they are deadly. Metal bolts can be shot with them with over 200 km / h.

However, as the police reported yesterday, Wrousis had been "decent and cooperative" during his arrest and had been arrested without resistance.

Local residents describe to BLICK how he was arrested in front of the snowboarding shop by two policemen in civilian clothes. "It was just before 7pm. There was a big police force," a local says. How he travelled from Schaffhausen to Thalwil is still unclear. Wrousis was questioned yesterday afternoon. On the last few meters of his escape, he was observed by several witnesses. From the underpass at the train station he went up to the main street, and took the risk of being seen.

Pizza baker Liman Kabashi from the Pizzeria Pipponi in the village center had recognized him immediately. "This is the chainsaw-man!" he shouted. Unlike his guest, Yli Kastrati (63), who also saw Wrousis. "I simply said you're crazy! What would the chainsaw man be doing in Thalwil? He walked with his head down. I only thought: this can't be! "

Wrousis's route passed the Gotthardstrasse at the house of Marlies K. (65). "I went down the street in my Jaguar, I immediately noticed him, he wore a hooded sweater and carried a big bag, and he shuffled so funny," she says.

Only 280 meters away from where she saw Wrousis the Thalwil CSS branch is located. CSS spokeswoman Christina Wettstein: "We have, of course, speculated where Franz Wrousis might go next and were afraid that he would be back in one of our branches."

Since Wrousis has been detained in the Schaffhaus prison, they now no longer hold their breath at CSS and at many other places.

The utter joy of telling the press that you were not driving so much as your car, but your Jaguar ... after all, what is the point of having one if you cannot talk about it?

I don't think I have ever heard of "pistol crossbows" before. it would be interesting to learn how he traveled around with such weapons and went undetected for those hours. Surely he has mental health issues; he somehow managed to portray some "oddness" but nothing alarming before. I wonder what set him off so severely to lash out as he did on that particular day.

I can't read the article about his lawyer, but I assume he is considered a good lawyer. I do believe Mr. W could end up in mental health care. Sounds like he needs a lot of treatment, maybe both physically and mentally. This is turning out to make me feel a bit of sadness for Mr. W. Has he no family?

ELVIS IMITATOR THANKS GOD FOR SECOND LIFE

20Min.ch
http://www.20min.ch/schweiz/news/story/14018247

The Thurgauer CSS-employee M.F. * was seriously injured during the chainsaw attack in Schaffhausen. On the day of the attack, he underwent emergency surgery. As it was known at the time, he wasn't responsive all day. Now he reports for the first time via Facebook, according to "Blick".

"The terrible event on Monday tore me and my family from our everyday life and completely changed our lives. I thank the Lord for giving me a second life," the CSS employee writes. He also moonlights as an Elvis imitator. Now, he wil first have process all that has happened - "and that takes time". In his Facebook statement he thanks everyone for the messages, best wishes, calls and flowers.

On Monday, Franz Wrousis purposefully attacked members of the health insurance company CSS. In addition to M.F. another employee was injured. Two customers, who were in the offices, suffered a shock.

Franz Wrousis was arrested on Tuesday in Thalwil ZH.

The lawyer is a big name. I did not translate the article because it is mostly about local cases, issues and politics.

I don't remember mentions of any siblings of Franz Wrousis, but there appears at least one brother in the pictures that were published. Face of the alleged brother is blocked, and he is not mentioned.
Wrousis is partially of Greek heritage and in his younger years, he travelled often there. He appears to have lead a normal life, until the car accident happened, but I haven't seen details about the accident itself.

IMHO he walked through the woods unseen from Schaffhausen to Thalwil. He was recognized almost immediately as he stepped into an area with people, so it seems unlikely that he took the bus or the train.

LONER, NATURE-LOVER AND FAN OF GREECE

Relaxed, happy, full hair. With a smile on his face, Franz Wrousis poses on the bed in front of the camera. It is one of many pictures from the good days.

How did the nature-loving fellow turn into a loner who changed his place of residence countless times and ended up living in the forest? A loner who seriously injured people. Whose laughter on the photo has disappeared in the same way as the full hair from previous years.

The man with the Basle dialect maintained a close relationship with Greece. He traveled to Athens several times in the 90s, and was interested in Greek literature, he went diving on the island of Hydra.
But somehow his life broke down. The people who had contact with him in recent years sketch the image of a confused man who could no longer deal with society.

CHILDHOOD FRIEND: "HIS MOTHER MEANT EVERYTHING TO HIM"

Blick.ch
https://www.blick.ch/news/schweiz/a...ine-mutter-bedeutete-ihm-alles-id7065978.html

On Sunday evening, they returned to the Kinderheim in Basel. There they spent the week while their mothers were working. Alberto. P. * (51) was the best friend of chainsaw attacker Franz W. ** (51). The friends grew up like brothers. In nearly every picture in the photo albums of Franz W., Alberto appears too.

As adults the two lost sight of each other - until Monday when Franz W. wounded two employees of CSS insurance in Schaffhausen with a chainsaw. "I have often asked myself what became of Franz , how he was doing," Alberto P., a heating engineer, says "I did not recognize him in the photos. But when I saw the the pictures from his youth in BLICK, I knew it was him. I was shocked ito the core!"

Recently, Franz W. lived in a forest near Uhwiesen ZH, slept in his VW Caddy. His childhood friend cannot explain the downfall from the smart, good-looking adolescent to the bewildered chainsaw man.

He tells: "We had a beautiful childhood and youth. Even if money was scarce. Franz was an only child and often at our home. His mother worked as a cleaner. He spent the holidays with us in Sicily and we celebrated Christmas together."

The two families live on the same street in Basel, in their free time the boys play football and wander around the houses. "The father of Franz was absent. I only know that he is Greek. I think a father figure was missing in his life. Perhaps a man's hand would have done him good," Alberto P. says.

Later, Franz often travels to his father's home country. An old passport reveals that he traveled to Athens several times in the 1990s. He is interested in Greek literature and goes diving on the island of Hydra. But the skilled carpenter does not seem to find his way in life anymore. He constantly changes his place of residence. Becomes dependent on the welfare state, unemployment benefit and IV.

From the age of 7 to 16 Franz W. lived together with Alberto in the children's home. "For us It was more of a boarding home during the week, as we spent the weekends at home," says Antonio P., who has fond memories of those times. "The house was run by nuns. We were about 120 children and had a lot of fun. We also liked the young, handsome volunteers who came to help the sisters."
Franz W. had been inconspicuous in school, neither particularly good nor particularly bad, according to his boarding school friend. Today, the home no longer exists. As the nuns grew older, there were no successors.

Franz W. had a close relationship with his mother. "His mother meant everything to him," says the childhood friend. "She later met a new partner. Franz, however, did not get on with his stepfather and left home at the age of 19."

On Tuesday evening Franz W. was arrested in Thalwil ZH. Alberto P. is relieved. "I hope he will get help now. He was never a bad person."

ZaZara, you are so kind to translate these articles for me/us. How sad that a person can become so tormented that he feels destroyed and needs to lash out with such vicious acts. At this point, I am inclined to believe he is mentally incompetent. I do hope he gets the help he needs. Just such a sad story so far.
