Teacher Arrested for Shoving Autistic Kid

*snip* but the reality is that we're getting a very unbalanced view.

I agree with your post, but I don't think anyone here is branding all teachers as abusive. However some of us are voicing concerns that the problem is more widespread than we had feared.

You are also right about keeping things in perspective. I am not advocating daily polygraphs for teachers or cameras in the classroom. I think as far as the schools are concerned they are doing enough as is. I am simply saying that as parents we should be more attentive to our children and receptive the idea that there could be a problem at any school.

Too often parents, myself included, brush things off or give the benefit of the doubt one too many times. I am simply saying to remember that while it is not likely to happen, the chance does exist and to act accordingly.

Assumption Parish school officials have not decided whether a teacher, arrested for shoving an autistic student face first to the floor after he refused to change clothes for a gym class, will continue to work for them.

They need to think about this...? I don't. I wonder if they would need time to think it over if this happened to a staff member? For some reason, it seems ok if it happens to a child. Unreal!

The media reports a story, it gets a lot of attention, they go looking for more stories in the same vein. That's why these things seem to happen in clusters.

The thing to always remember is that this is 3, out of what - a million school children? Probably more. There are bad schools, bad teachers, etc., and parents always should listen to their children. But I think most are very good, some are mediocre, some just work for the paycheck, and only a very few are bad. Just my experience, what I've seen with the wide range of teachers I've known or had experience with via my sisters children and other relatives.

2006 census - 299 million people, 24.6% under 18, 6.8% under 5. So a lot more than a million school children. 53 million school children.
:waitasec: This is 3 that have been reported and plastered all over the news. I'm not saying I think this is some epidemic starting...I simply don't want to be naive to think it can't happen to me and my child.
Think about this....If you only here about 3 rape cases in the media in the last month (which I rarely hear about any), do you believe only 3 people (out of millions) have been raped in the past month?
If you hear of 1 missing person on the news in the last month, do you believe only 1 person (out of millions) has gone missing in the last month?

The thing is, it's this teachers' 1st year teaching....not a very good start! I hope he's not back in the news years from now with a more serious offense...and everyone saying "why wasn't something done about him before now"..

I would feel the same if he had been teaching forever, but it does bother me that he's barely had his foot in the door. He, obviously, can't handle it. I won't say it's easy (can't be), but when it comes to verbal or physical abuse...it's your time to go.

So, a child is physically abused and they work around his schedule to interview him and he's still working around children. Let a parent get reported with the whole thing on tape and see if they get to stay around the kids or not get arrested right away. I think there's probably about two bad apple teachers in every school and several teacher's aides. How can these people go through school with an education in different problems that children can have and still be so ignorant, bitter, and mean.

Apparently they have philamena!!!! How do we trust our children at school anymore...It's very scary!
BTW...Assumption Parish is Thibodaux..

Acrually, Thibodaux is in Lafourche Parish. Assumption is to the northwest of Lafourche. The incident itself actually took place in Pierre Part

But, I do agree... as an educator, I'm appalled. I could not imagine putting my hands on a student. I don't see how someone could do it.

Anyone could have made the mistake. I live in Houma now too, but I used to live in Lafourche parish and the only reason I knew that Thibodaux was in Lafourche parish is cause anything we needed to, we had to go there to do it.
