Ted Haggard now "completely heterosexual"

This is why kcksum:

Your hegemonic existence as a "happy heterosexual" does not result in being treated negatively by others, being discriminated against, in imposed shame, in prejudgment by others etc. etc.

Beware: throwing in another angle here...

First, I just want to say what a refreshing change this thread is from many of the posts I read in the Imos thread, some on the VT threads and especially on the "white privilege" thread. I abandoned it early out of frustration and see its still growing so I have no idea what's been happening there the last few days. (Nova, your posts were some of the best exceptions - thank you!).

I am a straight disabled woman, my sister is a gay non-disabled woman. My whole life my sister has been my defender and protector in the often hostile environment I encountered as a disabled child in the 60's & 70's and still do (albeit to a lesser extent) as an adult. When she came out as a lesbian at 17, I was the only person she confided and it was many years before she was comfortable enough to be open about her orientation with others. We both put up with a lot of crap - though very different types of crap.

Eventually we both embraced our identity "differences" and we understand they are what make us who we are. I am what I because I am what I am (if that makes sense). We have had many discussions over the years about the similarities and differences in our life experiences as "others" and as a result we share a precious bond that none of my other siblings share.

When I first read Peggy McIntosh's seminal "White Privilege", while studying Community Work in the late 80's, I could relate to it completely as it went a long way to explaining my experiences as a wheelchair user in a walker's world. I imagine it speaks to the gay experience as well.

P.S. and O/T - Cyprus and Nova, as a mature post-graduate Disability Studies student, I would consider myself very lucky indeed to have either of you for a professor. We could have some great discussions about the parallels between Disability Studies, Queer theory and History! I recently attended a fascinating seminar on representations and evidence of disability in Medieval times.

Great post, Utopia.

Do you know the work of Victoria Lewis? She's a Disability Studies scholar and a professor at the University of Redlands. She also founded "Other Voices," a theater devoted to work by and about the disabled at L.A.'s Mark Taper Forum.

Here is her bio:

http://www.redlands.edu/victoria_lewis.xml

Vickie was a teaching assistant for a couple of my courses at UCLA, but I had known her earlier when we were both members of a playwright's workshop at the Mark Taper.

Hearing Vickie speak about her own work in the workshop, I discovered precisely the similarities of which you speak. In fact, I felt I learned a lot about queer studies (which was supposed to be my field!) from her.

(I'm sorry. I realize this is like you saying you have a "gay friend." I mention Vickie not because I expect you to know her, but because I respect her and think you might be interested in her work.)

Taking the "marriage cure" was once so common it was pretty much the rule.

I'd like to think those days are over, but I suspect Haggard proves they are not.

We have a local church that still advocates this "cure." :furious::furious:

He must be very desperate. Get a job, geez!

Hey! I was just talking to a friend last night, brainstorming ideas as to how to pay for him to go to college. Never occurred to us to ask OTHERS to pay his way!!

The kicker is, Haggard will probably get plenty of donations.

Heh. I've been wanting to go back to school for a while now. Maybe I should set up a website too, huh? lol He needs to get real. I only hope that there aren't many people who actually fall for it and donate money.

It figures he is out here in AZ now too.

Male Escort Service??? Just a thought ,Ted.

That ought to raise ones of dollars. :innocent:

So I guess the Halfway House fired him? Or decided to not go with him? That's what one of the posts says on that article.

UGH. I believe in forgiveness and that God forgives and second chances, Lord knows He has had mercy on me, but it seems awfully early for him to be mentoring or anything like that. I don't know, personally, I think he needs to get a job and support his family but that's my opinion. I wouldn't send money.

COLORADO SPRINGS - Former Pastor Ted Haggard's exclusive e-mail to NEWSCHANNEL 13 has raised questions about the non-profit chosen to receive his donations. The letter asks for financial support while Ted and his wife go back to school in Arizona. He suggests those wanting to donate, but need a tax write-off, should send it to Families with a Mission and lists a P.O. Box in Colorado Springs. According to the Colorado Secretary of State, Families with a Mission moved from Hawaii to Colorado in 2003, but then was dissolved for being delinquent in 2007.

and

Questions about Families with a Mission Director Paul Huberty have also surfaced. According to thestranger.com he is a sex offender, which NEWSCHANNEL 13 was able to verify.

WOW. This whole thing makes me sick.

Nice find, SewingDeb.

Thanks TaxiMom. I saw an article earlier tracking that Huberty guys sex offender address to the same address in Hawaii that the organization used before for donations. Can't find it now but that article pretty much exposes the head guy.

What does this charlatan and Mrs. charlatan want their major to be or does he bother to even mention it?

How wonderful....his children have a long drive to school. They go to "Christian School". No doubt a PRIVATE school, in swanky Scottsdale area that has a very large tuition.

This guy needs to get a J-O-B!

Has anyone read Mike Jones' I Had to Say Something? The Art of the Fall of Ted Haggard

It is a very quick read. I finished it in about two days. If you cannot handle slang or you're not open minded, don't bother to read the book. While it is a fascinating story, I feel that Mike Jones exposed Ted Haggard in order to gain fame himself.

Ted Haggard, the Christian Conservative Minister driven from his pulpit when allegations of a homosexual affair surfaced, is in the news again claiming that childhood sexual abuse is at fault. It may have indeed happened, but it also seems remarkably convenient to claim that a random "worker" for his father sexually abused him when he was seven. IIRC, Mr. Haggard has also claimed to be "cured" of his homosexuality.

I was sexually abused as a child. I did not grow up to do anything like this. Life is what you make of it. You can work to fix yourself and overcome adversity or you can use it as an excuse for every bad thing you do. I prefer not to continue playing the victim and don't make excuses for my behavior. Even if he happens to be a person that just can't overcome the trauma of abuse it is still HIS choice to lie and deceive. I don't see anything in that article that he said that makes me believe that he's doing anything but making excuses for himself and trying to play "woe is me".

I am so sorry for the pain you suffered and I am proud that you have moved forward into a good life...at least that is what I hope for you.

I have known people who have suffered as well and none of them "turned" anything as a result of it-not abusive, not stuck...you get my meaning. There are elements of them as people that show the scars, but they are amazing considering their level of success in the game of life.

If this is something that Mr. Haggard is throwing out there for convenience or to attempt to woo back his parishioners who will not have him, then it is a travesty. If it is a genuine event, I am sorry he suffered BUT he should simply shoulder the responsibility for his own behavior rather than seeing what will get him sympathy. JMO.
