I think that even if Number 1 had some contact with checynan rebels (it all depends on which side you are on in the conflict there, I have for years supported the rebels in their fight with russia) he was self radicalized to start with. The chechnyans dont have a beef with the states and unless it was pure religious oriented i don't see the motive. At least i believe strongly it wasn't politically motivated. My starting point is that #1 first became self radicalized then made contact with some checnyan groups but not for any political reason, if anything he may have used them to further his own religious extremism....
Well, imho, there are Chechen rebels and then there are Chechen terrorists. The fight with Russia was/is a good fight, imho too, but you don't do something like the Beslan School terror and call it being a rebel. That is terrorism, absolutely. (

I do agree that the radical, warped version of extreme radical Islam is probably what motivated any (Chechen) terrorist connection with the brothers. Politically it makes little sense for Chechens to dislike the US except for general anti-Americanism (which is in 'Russia' in spades; that is true enough). That's possible, but given the older brother's increasing conservatism in religion, I think his views went more to the 'USA is the Great Satan' meme of very radical Islam.
Because of the nature of the propaganda, allies and cultural motivations of the terror groups fighting Russia, they are getting increasingly pan-Radical-Islam (so more 'religious' and less purely political). Russia has been afraid of that for a while, and it's one of the reasons the gov't there speaks out about terror incidents that hit the Western European/Commonwealth/US West.
In other words, the Chechen terrorists and similar groups in the region are looking more to groups like Al Qaeda for support/power, and there is an increasing general 'anti-West' motivation accordingly. The West includes Russia and all the usual suspects
