I was pretty sure we were near the 10,000 range right from the time I saw the levee break and so many people on rooftops. You know that for every one you see, there are many others who didn't make it that far. And when the governor and everyone won't even guess at a death toll because they have to focus on the living (since so many of them are in danger of not continuing to be among the living) - that just proved it.

That is a tragedy......truly a tragedy.......Why are we playing the blame game with a such a tragedy????? Why not a big group hug????? I am just SAD

well, I am looking at my own governor and mayor now and want to know what our plan is. is it good enough? will they be able to evacuate the southland in an earthquake?

Good question JB, think I'll try inquiring. Just a few of our counties are larger than some states. O/T Did hear today that Arnie vetoed the Gay Marriage thing.

I am ashamed to admit I began donating in high school because donors got to leave school early and I had a really hot boyfriend! LOL It wasn't until later I appreciated the real reason for doing it.

I did it because I liked Heinlein, and read that that was his pet cause. And it was a great way to get out of the heavy yard work for a weekend (no heavy lifting, right?).

Because if we don't know why it happened, we can't prevent it from happening again. Someone in the chain of people to respond to this disaster killed probably hundereds of people - and must be prevented from ever doing so again. Knowing what went wrong is essential - we must know who is to blame for this.

We are just as devestated. Do we not rank with NO b/c we don't have as many dead, people are dying here daily. People have been found dead on the coast that have only been dead a few days, not the 10days ago that the storm hit. These people suffered misaerably and died a slow death. I welcome anyone to come spend a day on the MS gulf coast and tell me how good we have it. Don't go to NO though, you might get shot.

Boy, the PR machine has the phrase "blame game" working overtime. You should see the piece of the White House briefing I posted over there in the politics forum. Scott McClellan sounded like a mental patient. If you read how many times he said "blame game" and then committed a compound crime against good grammar and referred to "blame-gaming," you'd have to laugh.

How about if we call it the accountability exercise? Then can we find out why so many people died needlessly and try to prevent it from happening again? Or do we just want to let the powers that be try to shame us into not demanding answers by using some glib phrase?

Yes they are. My uncle and cousin stubbornly stayed and deeply regret it but they are find and are trying to get to MS. I have family in both places so it was a scary week spent wondering. NO and MS are all in this together and we both need help, not one more that the other.

Schwarzenegger Will Veto Gay-Marriage Bill

SAN FRANCISCO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will veto the bill permitting same-sex marriages, his press secretary said this afternoon.

Noting that voters approved a proposition that said marriage was between a man and a woman, spokeswoman Margita Thompson said the governor believes the state "cannot have a system where the people vote and the Legislature derails that vote."

He sheds even more light one of more complex tragedies of this disaster: why so many people were left in NO (which was predicted!).

And I haven't known much about LA politics. I saw (one of my favorite movies) The Big Easy, but that's fiction. When this started, I knew little of LA and NO. I'd been to NO once and didn't like it at all (I understand why others do). So I'm eager to learn more.

Most of us have - but I know there are people who aren't paying attention, or are blinded and won't believe without pictures (I know a guy on another board who insists the death estimates are all politics, doesn't think even 1000 have died :slap: ).

If the guy on the other board does not have the common sense, judging by how many people remained in New Orleans, to figure out that there were numerous deaths, he needs more than pictures. Not likely that each body would be photographed and personally presented for his edification.

Earlier, I thought about starting a whole thread about the levee problem. I mentioned it to another poster. It's such a complex issue, and it comes up and gets dropped and the links just get buried. But I don't think the topic specific threads get many responses. Or I'd be starting one for each major issue (Nagin/buses, who can do what, etc), because I am just that Type A.

I like to group things and have everything in its place. But it doesn't work in every setting, lol.

Sounds like a great idea. Part of the problem is we are covering so much that our links are getting lost. Would be great to look back at a narrower topic and be able to quickly locate them.
