The Amy Winehouse Thread

i can't think of a time when so many people watched a public figure skyrocket to fame and self-destruct so quickly, right before our eyes. did you all see her latest video? i swear it's like a memorial montage. very retro, very late-motown marvin gaye circa '71-inspired. can't help but think, they'll be playing this when she's dead... any day now, we'll be reading about it in the news. another gifted artist dead to stupid drugs. so many fans are rooting for her,, but it's almost like she's being mourned before she's even gone.

and here's a cynical thought.... and forgive me if i've been too naive here.
do you think it's possible that record companies actually encourage 'trainwreck-ism' these days... since they see how famous a gifted-but-doomed singer becomes after they die? maybe there are people out there who are milking her downfall for all it's worth.. and hoping to really cash in if she cashes in her chips.

Record companies not only buy into the talent, but also buy into and help craft the persona that makes the person. I wouldn't put it past some scrupulous agent egging on a deconstructing stars bad behavior.

I love Amy's music... but her talent and out-of-control lifestyle keeps me thinking that she will go the way of Janis Joplin. Every time her name pops up, I can't help but think "this is it... this is her obituary". I know that may sound morbid, but this young lady is so out-of-control that she is literally knocking on death's door. :(

I saw the images from a few months back, comparing her curvy past physique, with her current stick thin figure: it isn't all drugs that got her looking as skinny and sick as she looks today. Unfortunately when she was healthy looking, her curves drew critics and nasty size comments... because in the celebrity industry, her curvier former self was easily distorted as being "fat" by that industry. In turn, she got addicted to working out and trying to slim down. Add that to her drug issues, poor kid is looking rough, totally under weight, and well beyond her actual age. :(

Saw that recent picture of her in that t-shirt, wow, she is just covered with ugly tatoos--she needs mental help right away and a laser tatoo-removal specialist pronto

when are famous women going to start standing up to the entertainment media industry and tell them they are proud of their weight and the way they look, when they have a normal, healthy weight?

speaking of role models... AW is at a crucial crossroads and has the perfect chance to become a positive icon for millions of people struggling with the same issues.. if she could prove that she could save herself, get off the drugs, and look healthy again (skinny or not. with or w/o tattoos)... she could inspire many others who are in the same boat.
the problem is, would she become an intensely-adored, iconic legend to the same degree if she lived, and cleaned up? or would people become bored with her? people are in love with stars who destroy themselves, especially AFTER they die... it seems to be human nature.

Easy. They'll do that when they stop putting fame and fortune before their mental and physical well-being.

problem is.... most women DO like the way they look after they've slimmed down,, whether they're famous or not. how many plus-sized (or just normal, but 'plus-size' by hollywood standards) models & actresses have we seen who go on about how fine they are with their weight, but then they end up having surgery or dieting to get thin?

from the link above...
Rumour has it that Amy Winehouse is confirmed to be on board for the next Bond Film. Listening to her amazing "Back To Black" album, we realised one track could almost have worked very well as a Bond Theme. The team got to work and created a "what if" Casino Royale reworking...
i agree...would be a perfect Bond theme!

& yes, it does look like a memorial montage..a little creepy

The only person that can save Amy is Amy. We've watched Whitney Houston go from one of the most amazing vocalists ever to some chick in a fur coat outside a gas station waiting on her dealer. Scott Weiland. After his own brother OD'd not too long ago he just got busted again. Personally I don't think the record companies encourgae all the drug use. Fergie from "The Black Eyed Peas" rode the crack train and hard. She's a huge role model to alot of young girls, and she's made it back, and her record company helped her. With Amy Winehouses husband locked up I think now would be the best time for her to get herself into treatment. If we are to believe she's hanging out with Pete Doherty well then that's just trouble personified. Maybe the former James King known now as Jamie King the model could help Amy. That kid beat heroin, and has stayed clean. I really feel bad for Amy Winehouse. I so do. As long as she got breath in her there is hope.

I hate that in this day and age the entertainment, modeling etc. industries are making healthy, curvy, young women feel they have to get stick thin to make it.

Today, Marilyn Monroe with her gorgeous (and all real) body would be considered fat.

Agree 100%. When did we decide that grown women should look like adolescent boys? I love me some curves - and in my experience so do most real men!

Imo, Amy looks pathetically sick.
The less media attention she gets the better.

I read somewhere that she was putting out cigarettes on her face and that was the cause. This was a week or so ago - but I don't remember which site reported that.

I did see pictures of her allegedly taken Sunday night where she had fresh cuts up and down her arms again. She's admitted several times she's a cutter.

Very sad - whatever the situation. I hope she gets the help she needs.

Her face looks horrible...and this coming from a 28 yr old who still breaks out!
I feel bad for her...but why is she going out and being around everyone when they told her how contagious it was???

She has some serious skin problems. I don't know if that is impetigo, but that is some bad infection.

http://www.tmz.com/2008/03/18/omg-what-is-wrong-with-her-face/

I know we have a few nurses on here. Do you think it might be something else?

Tammie in Miami

I'm not a Doctor or a Nurse, but impetigo is usually seen in children. Anyone can get it of course, and it's usually seen like near your mouth or nose. It depends on what is causing it. Staph or Strep as to how it looks I think. Amy Winehouse isn't known to be the most sanitary chick. Her hands always look filthy. Then she's picking her face with them hands. No matter what it is she shouldn't be covering that up with any make-up. She has to be spreading it all around. I honestly feel sorry for this girl. Such talent and awards and she's just so lost and sad.
