To give some context to stories over the last couple of days, Meghan did an engagement on Friday that was embargoed for Britain’s Sunday papers. What irked royal corrs was we were told it was embargoed because she didn’t want to conflict with Camilla’s speech on domestic abuse...

But then she did conflict with Camilla’s speech by giving a story to London’s evening newspaper about her trip to see a National Theatre project. The story came out on the day Camilla was making her big speech.

In the great scheme of things it probably doesn’t amount to a hill of beans but it irked journalists, who felt they had been played, and it created a presentational problem inside the Royal Household.

More importantly, I think, it illustrated one of the problems that has led to the departure of the Sussexes. They may have alienated middle England but they are still a big international draw. And yet they have had to play second and third fiddle to more senior royals.

The household does meet regularly to coordinate plans and it’s perfectly possible for several members of the Royal Family to gain media attention on the same day. But it is a problem for the monarchy.

The other interesting point for me at least is that I understand the National Theatre was frustrated that some of Meghan’s previous visits had been “private” and wanted to push her latest visit to promote one of its attractions.

The National Theatre’s frustration may herald a problem for Harry and Meghan in the future. If their visits to patronages and projects aren’t covered live by the media it does devalue the patronage or support.

Setting aside websites, which will always go for cheap clicks, the Sussexes do face a problem in future if they don’t invite credible national media to cover their projects. A handful of sycophants who never challenge or ask awkward questions will soon reduce public interest.
