'We will overcome it': The Queen urges Britons to pull together and 'remain united and resolute' to get through coronavirus crisis

Her Majesty The Queen gave a great address. I hope it provided comfort to many during this extremely challenging time.
It was lovely, had me n tears. Lovely to see the footage of all the frontline workers rather than just Her Majesty who thankfully looks very well and healthy. What a great lady she is.

The Queen reassures nation that

The Queen reassures nation that 'better days will return' during TV broadcast on coronavirus crisis
It marked the fifth public address in Her Majesty's 68-year reign

The 93-year-old monarch, speaking in a pre-recorded broadcast from Windsor Castle, spoke of the difficulties of self-isolation but reassured the country, saying: "We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return: we will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again."

Her Majesty paid tribute to the NHS and those "selflessly" working on the frontline during the crisis, saying: "I am sure the nation will join me in assuring you that what you do is appreciated and every hour of your hard work brings us closer to a return to more normal times."

The monarch, wearing a green dress with a turquoise and diamond brooch, reflected on previous crises faced by the nation, including World War II. Then Princess Elizabeth, she was 13 when war was declared and she lived at Windsor Castle with her younger sister, Princess Margaret. She said, during her address: "It reminds me of the very first broadcast I made, in 1940, helped by my sister. We, as children, spoke from here at Windsor to children who had been evacuated from their homes and sent away for their own safety. Today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones. But now, as then, we know, deep down, that it is the right thing to do."

She looks really well, I'm very relieved.

As for this line "the attributes of self-discipline, of quiet good-humoured resolve and of fellow-feeling still characterise this country" I think she's telling us to keep smiling and keep being kind to others, and of course praising our innate talent for queueing :D

The 'be kind' vibe was very strong.

Sounds like she was giving a nod to the Vera Lynn song?

Not the original version but a nice video of We'll Meet Again:

I think you're right! And that bit when she said about doing a speech with Margaret in 1940..... 80 flippin' years ago!! Glad to have her as head of our country and Commonwealth.

Sending positive thoughts to our friends in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, as well as the other 50 Commonwealth nations (a third of the world's population, no less). And of course to everyone else, too.

Stay home, stay safe.

Story behind diamond and turquoise brooch Queen wore for coronavirus TV message

“She teamed the dress with a stunning diamond and turquoise brooch, which used to belong to Queen Mary.

It features a large turquoise stone surrounded by diamonds.

The Queen's grandmother Queen Mary was given the piece on her wedding day, and left it to the now-monarch when she died in 1953.”

What brilliant remarks from your Queen, and I believe she herself was moved to tears when she talked about separation from our families.

We have had nothing like this in the US from those whose pose as our leaders. Our citizens are on their own as they look for support or inspiration. But I have looked to the U.K. for hope in the progress of the disease. The statistics have provided none. COVID, it seems, is ravaging your country as badly as my own not in absolute numbers then definitely as a percentage of the population.

The Queen’s final remarks hit the perfect note, it will indeed get better. We will be together again.

Thank you, @Han, what lovely comments, I'm glad the Queen has given you some reassurance. We certainly are all in this together and things will eventually get better.

Remember:

Everything will be ok in the end.
And if it's not ok, it's not the end.

The Mary connection is interesting given that is was a flu pandemic which killed her first fiancé in 1892, the future King. She then went on to marry his younger brother in 1893, who later became King. It would be like if William had died the month before marrying Kate, then Kate went on to marry Harry and become Queen anyway. Imagine!

At the age of 24, [Mary] was betrothed to her second cousin once removed Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, the eldest son of the Prince of Wales, but six weeks after the announcement of the engagement (and just six weeks before the wedding), he died unexpectedly during an influenza pandemic. The following year, she became engaged to Albert Victor's only surviving brother, George, who subsequently became king.

Off on a tangent but I always think Lady Louise (Edward's daughter) has a look of Mary.

The Queen delivers a heartfelt message to the 'stoic and resilient Australians' suffering through the coronavirus crisis after bushfires and floods ravaged the nation

‘At a time when people across the Commonwealth are experiencing a profound and rapid change to their lives, the pain of lost loved ones, and an understandable concern about the future, my thoughts are with all Australians,' she said.

'Whilst it can be difficult to remain hopeful in such challenging times, especially following the summer's devastating bushfires and recent flooding, I am confident that the stoic and resilient nature of the Australian people will rise to the challenge.

'I extend my sincere admiration to the many Australians who work tirelessly to help those affected, provide essential services for their fellow citizens, and continue to care for the most vulnerable.

'You will remain in my prayers in the coming months, with the resolute knowledge that with hard work, faith and unity, we will rise to the challenges ahead and ensure the health and vitality of all Australia's communities.'

Prince William and Kate Middleton quote the Queen's TV address to the nation on their Instagram account

Prince William and Kate Middleton publicly show support for the Queen following rare TV broadcast
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge reinforced the Queen's message on Instagram

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have expressed their support for the Queen in a new Instagram message shared to their Kensington Palace account. The post featured a photo of Her Majesty taken during her official address to the nation about the coronavirus pandemic, which took place at 8PM on Sunday. It showed the Queen wearing an emerald green dress and pearls with a stunning diamond and turquoise brooch, sitting facing the camera with her hands clasped on her lap. The monarch's expression was serious yet calm.

The image's caption began by quoting the monarch, and read: "'We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return: we will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again.'" The post went on: "Her Majesty The Queen has addressed the UK and Commonwealth in a special broadcast recorded at Windsor Castle — visit @TheRoyalFamily to watch in full."

William and Kate's followers appreciated the Queen's sentiments, commenting: "Beautifully said your Majesty! Lots of love to all," "Just watched her majesty just now!! We can do it," and: "She gets it right every time." This is only the fifth time the monarch has recorded a televised message to the nation other than at Christmas. Her previous addresses came during the first Gulf War in 1991, as well as following the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997 and the Queen Mother in 2002. She also recorded a televised message to mark her Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
